What do you think is most likely to happen for the 40th anniversary?

With Metroid turning 40 this year I’m sure we’re all wondering what exactly Nintendo might have in store for the celebration (even though Nintendo isn’t really known for these types of celebrations). For the 35th anniversary we had the lovely surprise of getting Metroid Dread, but that feels more like a happy coincidence rather than a planned thing. With 40 being a big milestone, here’s everything that I can think of that might happen this year (do note that I’m not saying all of this will happen, just only some):

- Free Switch 2 updates for Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime Remastered

- Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3 HD remaster (let a man hope for its existence)

- Metroid Prime 2 Nintendo Switch Online drop

- Boss rush update for Prime 4 like what Dread got?

- Samus Returns HD (there’s nothing hinting at this thing existing, just something fun I wanna see hopefully)

- Super Metroid Remake announcement and/or release (there’s a rumor going around saying this is a thing, but I don’t buy it personally)

- Metroid 6 announcement

For my money I think the two most likely things to happen are free upgrades for Dread and Prime remastered and Prime 2 releasing on NSO. I wanna say that we’ll get the announcement for Metroid 6, but unless that’s something that releases this year I doubt it since Nintendo seemingly wants to shrink the announcement to release window for their games.

So when can we expect to see Shadows’ last content update?

I get that all the focus right now at Ubisoft is on Black Flag Resynced and I know that a lot of you would rather just move on from Shadows, but as someone that likes Shadows I would like know exactly what this “all content” content update that Simmon teased during the anniversary stream is about. Especially since the last TU that the game got that gave the game PSSR2.0 support changed a mystery location in the game by adding a lot of Animus blocks. Is it safe to assume that whatever this last update is will launch right before BF Resynced releases? I just don’t want Shadows’ life to end on a whimper.

Edit: Ugh, for some reason the two bullet points that I made got deleted. Give me a moment while I rewrite them as best I can.

Edit 2: There we go. Not as well written as I had it before, but it gets the basic point across.

Playing OG Black Flag now in a marathon I’m doing and while I’m having so much fun with this game, one thing I’ve noticed in this game (and to an extension AC3) is that when there’s a lot of enemies in a small space and with a lot of allies the combat just breaks. This is because of two reasons:

  1. Combat has an auto-targeting system instead of a manual one. While this means you can free enter and exit combat, once you have a lot of enemies the player character has a hard time keeping focus on one enemy, leading to combat feeling herky-jerky.

  2. Pre-Origins games used paired animations. While this can look well choreographed this leads to a problem. Ezio for expansion still has a basic attack animation that happens when you press the button, Kenways don’t they just “show off” the weapon. Paired this with the auto-targeting problems and you can very easily find yourself unable to do anything.

Numerous times have I engaged in a ship-boarding combat where Edward has trouble keeping focus on one enemy, have an enemy focus on me, and have Edward just disengage combat. It gets to the point where it’s annoying to fight enemies on their ship. I would have to wait for an enemy to attack me to re-engage combat, but because you have your crew also engaging in combat they sometimes attack the enemy that’s attacking me, leading to that enemy not attacking me but instead attacks the crew, which means I’m left there not doing anything. Combat in the Kenway Trilogy is also pretty fast paced so this happens more often that I would like it to happen.

All of this to say I’m glad that Assassin’s Creed switch to a hit-box based combat system with Origins. Yeah this leads to combat looking less flashy and choreographed than the older titles, but I like knowing that once I hit the attack button the player character will swing their weapon and that any enemy in the area can get hit by that swing if the weapon reaches them.

Back for the 15th anniversary, Ubisoft did a cool thing were all the games had this fancy black and gold game icon/cover. They looked nice, but this was obviously done for the 15th anniversary celebration. So obviously when the event passed all the games reverted back to their original icon… except Black Flag for some reason on Xbox specifically. It was sticking out like a sore thumb sitting in the game library like that. I thought this was never getting fixed because Ubisoft would rather do stuff for Resynced instead of the OG. To my surprise though OG Black Flag has gone back to its original icon! Don’t know when exactly it happened, but it’s nice to have that icon back. Anyways though that’s it. Time to play Black Flag.
