Kick patch that doesn't sound like a cannon?

Hey all,

I slapped a PET patch on my mesh head, and now my lady is suddenly irritated.

Is there a patch I could get that will keep the sound profile closer to the original head? Do I really need one if I'm not using felt beaters?
