Silence effects *during* cleanup step (Cleanup step combo win)

Building [[Niv-Mizzet Ghost Council]] and devising a cleanup step win where I gain life by discarding to hand size and initiate an infinite chain of drawing above 7 and discarding to hand size, pinging the table to death.

I know Silence wears off at cleanup step, but what happens if someone casts a silence **during** a cleanup step?

I know it would fizzle at the beginning of the next cleanup, but I’m envisioning a situation where someone tries to nuke a combo piece and I need to play over the top of it— specifically someone sniping one of the Eldrazi titans I use to shuffle my graveyard back in to ensure I can do this long enough to kill the table.

Can I [[Bilbo’s Gambit]] the removal spell and continue going off forever provided I have a way to keep the stack alive and not allow the next cleanup to begin? Or do Silence effects not work during cleanup steps at all?

Learned a hard lesson about running draft events last night

I run commander and draft events for the bar I work at and recently got the opportunity to run a Kamigawa Neon Dynasty draft, thanks to a generous regular donating one of the boxes so we could keep costs down for players.

The event went well enough in the end, but the start was rough. We had 19 participants, so I divided the pods into two 6s and a 7. Most understood and preferred this to a 10 and a 9, though some complained because the 7 pod saw more cards.

The real mistake I made, though, was thinking it was a good idea to put 5 new players in one pod with myself, thinking I would be able to help them with questions and avoid slow drafters annoying the experienced ones.

What this actually did was make the all-beginner pod take 25 minutes longer to draft than anyone else, so everyone was already annoyed and frustrated by the time we finally started round one. And then when those new players were slow to make decisions, it elevated frustration higher.

Things mostly smoothed out as the night went on barring a couple drops due to an already late start + slow drafters pushing the event later than intended. But I do feel kinda bad that the last chance most of us are ever gonna get to draft NEO was less than perfect.

Posting here mainly to share this for other new TOs to learn from this mistake and hopefully to garner feedback on how to improve.

“Upgrading” Duel Decks?

Has anyone ever considered modifying and upgrading old Duel Decks and similar pre-constructed 1v1 products? I know this is the Jumpstart sub but this is probably the closest fit for such a topic.

Jumpstart is cool but a bit different since your theming and synergy is going to be inconsistent and most likely lower power. I was thinking about maybe modifying some old Duel Decks to bring them all to an even but higher than original power level. Figure with enough of them you end up with a pool of flavorful casual 1v1 decks that allow you to play strategies not really viable in any constructed format.

Battle of Wits

I’ve started the process of assembling set cubes for the early 10s era and I’m not sure what to do about [[Battle of Wits]].

I love the card, it’s so funny. I’ve always wanted to build a deck for Modern that uses it. But in a cube I don’t see a reason to include it? It’s just a dead card….

…but if set cubes are supposed to be like sealed, it should be there, right?

What do yall think? Do I just pack a ton of basics in case someone wants to try? Replace it with another rare? Let it ride?

Crew/Station & Peter Parker's Camera

In the past I've used [[Peter Parker's Camera]] to double Station abilities on spacecraft but I'm not entirely sure if this works.

Example: I tap [[Ancient Stone Idol]] to station [[Dawnsire]], and with that station on the stack I spend 1 mana to activate the Camera and double the trigger

My logic is that it's an Activated Ability for which tapping a creature is the Cost to activate, and then the ability on the stack is "Station 12" or "put 12 charge counters on Dawnsire" and thus can be copied.

But IS it a cost, or is tapping the creature part of the ability? If not, then it wouldn't work because it has to be untapped to tap it... right?

I’m having so much fun with the Assassin’s Creed set.

I was never a fan of the games and didn’t think I’d be that into the set. [[Alexios]] stuck out early on, but I mostly ignored ACR…

Until recently when something bit me and I’ve been *obsessed* with ACR to the point where I’m actually playing the games (blazed through and loved AC1, 1/4 through AC2 now.)

This set is *so* incredible from a flavor standpoint and the mechanics of the cards are so cool on top of that. I think it’s a crime it came out when it did, before UB sets were always draftable. The mechanics in the set would’ve made for great precons if we had a bit more support for stuff like memory counters and cloak.

The WUBRG [[Ezio Auditore]] is an easy way to throw everything in one deck, though I don’t think he’s a forever commander for me. I’m far more interested in [[Altair]] for a coherent Assassin go-wide deck, with tons of flavor potential with [[Desmond Miles]] and [[The Animus]].

Easily my favorite card in the set is [[Become Anonymous]], the artwork is *gorgeous*, the flavor is unmatched and it’s such a unique protection effect. It’s inspired me to build a specific in-universe commander (considering reskinning to Al Mualim) to focus on face-down assassins…

Has anyone else warmed on this set? Done anything cool with it?
