Tips for first free solo?

After my first ascent I didn't want to do free solo yet, so I started a save file in alpinist but without pitons, like a training ascent. Aaand then I couldn't resist the temptation to open a free solo save file too, thinking "I'll progress them in parallel, with the alpinist one showing me which way is safe". But now I made waaaay more progress on the free solo one cause it's so much more fun, got no falls and I'm almost at the Child XD
I know the next sections are much more difficult, I dread the Palace of Winds and the Peril especially. Any tips to make sure I get to the top?

So far I've activated hold feedback and limb highlighting. On my first ascent I didn't have them, and way too often my fall would result from me being way too confident in a hold I thought was good, or me thinking I'm moving one limb when it's actually another. But that's for the settings. What about technique, mindset, resource management?

Finished my first climb! Such a journey

>!On the wall with the avalanche, just a few seconds before it started I thought "hmmm I haven't used pitons since the start of this wall, maybe I should ensure I don't fall to my death" but then "I can climb 3 more meters safely, let's place it up there". And of course I was prevented from putting that piton... And fell to my death a few meters later XD!<

>!Good thing I had an edelweiss, huh... I'm not gonna attempt a free solo yet!!<

>!Anyway: fantastic game, beautiful *beautiful* ending, made me feel intense feelings like few other games have. Wish I could have gone back down to the last shelter to tell Damas that I did it. But I'm guessing I didn't "do it", if I didn't come back alive... Did I? "The troglodytes will celebrate you. Coming back alive is always a victory."!<

Dynamo lights with cantilever brakes?

I bought this bike a while ago, it's a vintage mountain bike and I feel in love with the frame, despite it requiring 26in tires and having a cantilever setup. Many repairs later, it's all good for the road! Except it has no lights right now. I did install a dynamo, since I remember how much I loved having dynamo lights on my previous bike, so now I'm looking for a setup that would utilize said dynamo.

But now I'm stuck trying to choose a front light. The cantilever brakes, while functional, have a cable RIGHT where the light would be, right in front of the fixation hole on the frame. I'm hesitating to try to buy a light like one on the third photo, hoping the cable would go through the slit, but I'm afraid that'll make the cable joint hit the mount during active braking... And I don't want to compromise braking effectiveness. I also thought of buying an adapter to go underneath the cable joint, but couldn't find any that wouldn't be crazy expensive. And none were advertised to work with cantilever anyway.

Is there a solution to this, or should I buy lights that go on the handlebar? Has anyone found a dynamo setup that works with cantilever brakes?

Would you climb back down the Peril for a collectible?

I just got to the base of the Needle for the first time, and accidentally found out that the second troglodyte piton I've been looking for is quite some ways below, before the Peril, even before the Palace of Wind... I am thinking about it, should I turn back or keep going? Is that a quintessential first ascent experience, to miss something very important and only realize hours later? I might leave it for my next ascent, but it is on my mind...

I don't know if there's any more troglodyte pitons, but I'll be looking for it. Hope I don't miss it!

I don't like that I can't get back my pitons while climbing

I don't mean when climbing and being attached to the rope. That is obviously impossible, as the climbbot is busy belaying me. But when I finish a climb and stand on solid ground, I have to wait over a minute for climbbot to recover the pitons and bring them back, before I go on the wall. I trust myself to not fall for the first few meters of the climb, so I am tempted to continue my climb before I get my equipment back. But instead I have to wait on solid ground and *then* start climbing. It's a lot of time just standing there doing nothing, waiting for climbbot to get to me.

At one point I made the mistake of starting the climb too early, and I saw climbbot approach me and climb alongside me with 4 pitons in its belly, not giving me any of them. I had to climb back down to solid ground because doing the full climb without any protection wasn't doable. I felt like my climbbot was teasing me '-'

Game won't let me go towards the collectible

I am right after the Child, and the route I decided on was to go up the big statue, then up again to the first puppet part, then left for the second part, and then up to the plateau, so I can walk to the left and rappel down to the third one. But when I got to the top plateau, I met a guy (forgot his name) and got a cinematic with the northern lights and all, which apparently saved my game. I decided to go a few meters back to that I could still rappel down to the third puppet part, but when I get close to the edge, a big circle appears and after a few seconds Aava says "oops not that way" and the screen goes black before teleporting me back "on the right track".

I really liked the freedom this game gave me in my route until now, don't tell me I can't go back for this collectible? Did I mess up by going through the cinematic? Is there a way for me to get an older save file (though I really don't want to, that was a while ago)? Please tell me how can I get down there! It's the only piece I'm missing.

Edit: Turns out, the issue wasn't that I was going down, but this ledge in particular. I had to go back right to where I got up to the plateau, and rappel from there. Unfortunately, I did break a piton and I didn't even have enough rope, so now I have to climb back up with a single troglodyte piton. But I have the doll!

Any way to fix the button prompts?

I tried playing Expedition 33 on PC with my switch pro controller, and loved it, but was missing the precision of a mouse. I do not like playing with a mouse though (not comfortable), so I decided to try on steam deck, since it has a trackpad that I can force to behave like a mouse. The problem is, it looks like Expedition 33 completely switches its whole control scheme when I use it, and not just in the moment, but for the duration of the combat. So if I walk around with the trackpad and encounter an enemy, I'm now stuck with the game telling me "press Q to do this attack" while I have to guess which button on the controller that is. Moving the joystick or pressing controller buttons doesn't fix it, only once I exit the combat do I get the controller prompts again.

I really enjoy playing on the steam deck, it has a really good balance between controller and mouse, and I'm even thinking of getting a steam controller so that I can have that on my main PC... But the keyboard prompts are adding a lot of confusion to a game that's already pretty complex.

Can custom .template files feature colors?

I have discovered the new template system, and I'm loving it! Made myself a few custom templates, and some of them could really benefit from some lines being in color, I just don't know how to do that. Is it possible to make some lines colored, and if so, how?

Also noticed that when I don't set strokeThickness, the line appears grey. But I'm pretty sure that's just cause the default thickness is very small, and anti-aliasing makes it look grey.

Why are all templates so zoomed in?

I tried several templates, and I always have to choose the "small" version and it's often still too big. On my actual notebooks, the grid is 4mm (so I get 8mm between lines), but on the reMarkable it's 6mm for the smallest grid.

When I found the Seyes grid on rM Methods, I was pretty excited to try it, since it's what I used to write in school (standard in France), it's a very nice grid for writing. 8mm square grid, and each square has 3 horizontal lines inside, 2mm between each line. But when I loaded the template onto my reMarkable, again everything was multiplied by 1.5: the lines were 3mm apart, with the big squares being 12mm in size. Waaaaay too big for writing comfortably. There's a reason Seyes has such specific dimensions, why change perfection?

The rm2 already has a smaller screen than my paper notebook... So why make the amount of stuff I can write even smaller? Are the people at reMarkable all writing in big letters, and think so one needs smaller templates?

I could make my PDF file and write on it like a normal notebook, but it's not as flexible as a real template...

Erratum: The template doesn't have 12mm squares, my bad. They're 13.3333333mm, which is even more incomprehensible. So yeah, my "corrected" grid is still just slightly too big (but much closer to the real deal).

You can't buy reMarkable 2 anymore?!

I don't understand that choice. The rm2 is by far the best product in their line. The new reMarkable pure doesn't get even close to it, not just because it looks cheap, but feature-wise it's just worse.

It's smaller, thicker, and most of all: it lost the marker that was THE appeal of the rm2. Even in the description of the new marker it says "pen-on-paper feel", not pencil-on-paper. Last I tried this new marker, I would have even described it as "rock-on-glass" to be honest, it's so hard and loud. Where's my soft marker tip now? Why remove the option for those of us who are looking for a replacement for pencil and paper? It's just such a stupid decision to discontinue the only product that actually brings something that other tablets do not. I couldn't imagine getting myself one of those new tablets. This new marker is a real deal breaker.

Anyway, I bought the rm2 refurbished just a week ago, I hope they will keep their warranty and customer support for a while...

I have a weird feeling about reMarkable as a company, I don't know if I like it or not. On one hand, the new devices do not cater to me as a consumer at all. They lost the pencil feeling, added too many new distractions, started focusing on keyboard instead of handwriting... It doesn't work for me. But on the other hand, the reMarkable 2 is single handedly the best investment in a piece of tech I could have ever made, it genuinely changes the way I work. And when I had issues with it, the customer service wasn't just fast, it was effective and flexible. Last time I broke my marker , I had a new one in my mail box the next day, free of charge, without even needing to return the old one. And yesterday, I had to contact them via the chat, and I got a response from a *human agent* in, I kid you not, a single minute. The customer service at reMarkable feels like flying first class, or staying at a 5-star hotel, it has that premium feel. "Don't worry it's being taken care of".

So... Yeah, I don't know if I like where the company is going with its product line. I am, however, never worried about being ignored by the staff. Not like other companies that have way more budget but still make you talk to badly programmed bots (I'm looking at you Google).

I just upgraded from my rm2 to an rmpp, and if my god I hate it so much. I was so excited for it, I was ready to love it... The glass screen is super loud, the screen is also very yellow for some reason, the book folio is way too flexible and the magnets too strong... But most of all, it has a LOT of yellow ghosting all the time, it looks like someone took a piss on it whenever I switch pages. It stays even after a full refresh, idk why. It feels extremely distracting in my workflow, I think I'm gonna return it promptly. Too bad, I really wanted a bigger screen, a backlight and colors...

I just want to know, is that ghosting to be expected on these tablets, or is that a manufacturing defect? It feels way too bad to be "normal".

I built my PC in late 2023 (it's my first build), and it worked well for 2 years. But these past few months I've been having RAM issues on my PC, and it's been getting increasingly worse. Programs crashing, file system corrupting, it's barely usable. I noticed that moving my RAM sticks around was impacting the stability, and that I could run more or less well with a single stick in slot A2, but not in dual-channel. At the time I assumed the issue had to be the motherboard, since it already had some issues before that. I bought a new one (ouch my wallet), replaced it, and now... It still crashes, just as badly as before, if not worse. Updating BIOS changed nothing either. Both sticks are crashing individually and together, I can see bit flips on the memtest in all configurations. Lowering the DRAM frequency from 4800 to 4200 does make the issue less frequent, but it's still there.

I'm left with two options: it's either the CPU or the RAM that's the issue. I have no way of replacing one of them to test them separately, no one I know owns DDR5 RAM nor an AM5 CPU. That's on me for wanting the latest and best of hardware, I end up with no spare parts, since everyone else is still using the old standard... I'm not ready to drop yet another few hundreds of euros on a part just to see if it fixes it. Did that with the motherboard, didn't like it. And I've seen those RAM prices, those sticks went from 200€ to 600 in the couple years that I've owned them. The fact that both sticks are malfunctioning makes me think that it's more probable that the issue is in the CPU's memory controller, but I don't like betting big money on probabilities. Is there any way to find where the issue is, without guessing?

Specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

RAM: 2x32GB CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk wifi

PSU: Seasonic FOCUS GX-850 80+ Gold 850 Watt
