According to Martín del Palacio, Giani Infantino has promised to help the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) seek its exit from CONCACAF in order to join CONMEBOL, provided he remains FIFA president. According to the journalist, this scenario would unfold if the United States and Canada were to oppose the FMF within CONCACAF. Faced with a potential rift with its main partners in the confederation, Infantino reportedly offered to help Mexico find a new path within CONMEBOL. This would be one of the reasons that explains the FMF's rejection of Infantino, while other CONCACAF federations have taken a critical stance and are demanding changes within FIFA. Should a move of this magnitude ever materialize, Mexico could once again compete regularly against teams such as ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, URUGUAY, COLOMBIA and the rest of South America.
Since 1964, CONCACAF decided to divide the Champions Cup into three geographic zones to reduce costs and travel for club competitions. This led to the creation of three regional qualifying tournaments: the Central American Tournament, the Caribbean Tournament, and the North American Tournament. The winners of each zone would advance to the final round to determine the best team in the confederation. Mexican clubs were placed in the North American zone, which was also the most neglected and inconsistent zone of the championship. Of the 27 possible editions, only 11 were held, and the vast majority suffered from the withdrawal of participants, who typically numbered fewer than five teams. The first "champion" of the North American Tournament was the Philadelphia Ukrainians of the American Soccer League in 1967. It's worth noting that they won this trophy after the Mexican and Canadian champions withdrew.
Proposed Format In its early editions, this tournament brought together the champion clubs from the four leagues in the northern zone of CONCACAF: the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. As a proposal for a possible relaunch, a modern format is suggested that would bring together the best teams from each league in the region. The competition would consist of a total of 32 clubs, distributed as follows:
- 12 teams from Major League Soccer (MLS).
- 10 teams from Liga MX.
- 8 teams from the Canadian Premier League (CPL).
- 2 teams from the Bermuda Premier League (BPL).
The tournament would begin with the Round of 32, using a single-elimination format in all rounds until the final. As a sporting reward, the champion, runner-up, and third-place finishers would qualify for the Concacaf Champions League, strengthening the competitiveness of the North American region and providing an additional incentive for participating clubs. This proposal seeks to modernize the tournament, increase competitiveness among the top North American leagues, and revive a historic competition with a dynamic, attractive, and high-level format.
The matchups for the CONCACAF U-20 Cup Quarter-Finals have been set, which will determine the remaining qualifying spots.

The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. All six teams in the tournament qualify for the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
These are the five most successful teams in MLS history.
First is LA Galaxy with 22 titles, including: 6 MLS Cups, 2 US Open Cups, 4 Supporters' Shields, 9 Conference Championships, and 1 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Second is D.C. United with 4 MLS Cups, 3 US Open Cups, 4 Supporters' Shields, 5 Conference Championships, 1 CONCACAF Champions Cup, and 1 Interamerican Cup.
Seattle Sounders boasts 2 MLS Cups, 4 US Open Cups, 1 Supporters' Shield, 4 Conference Championships, 1 CONCACAF Champions Cup, and 1 Leagues Cup.
Sporting Kansas City holds 2 MLS Cups, 4 US Open Cups, 1 Supporters' Shield, and 6 Conference Championships.
Columbus Crew rounds out the top five with 3 MLS Cups, 1 US Open Cup, 3 Supporters' Shields, 4 Conference Finals, and 1 Leagues Cup.
The matches would be played primarily in the country's most modern and historic stadiums, taking advantage of much of the remodeled infrastructure left over from the 2026 World Cup. Although the final list of venues has not yet been released, the main leaks and projections from the Mexican football scene point to a pool of eight candidate stadiums spread across the country. The idea is that international matches could be enjoyed throughout Mexico, with the United States, Canada, and invited teams such as Cape Verde or South American countries potentially joining the fray.
Mexico could potentially host the 2038 World Cup, not on its own, but as part of a regional bid led by the United States, with Mexico as a key partner and the possibility of adding other countries from Central America and the Caribbean.
