Expansion of the universe not slowing down after all - previous DESI research had a systematic error
Our universe's expansion is still accelerating despite recent claims suggesting otherwise, an international team of astrophysicists says.

This has been the globally accepted theory ever since, although last year's research by the South Korean team threatened to upset the apple cart. It claimed that, as the universe aged, these supernovae had different maximum brightnesses, tricking astronomers into thinking the cosmos was accelerating when it was in fact slowing.
But the University of Southampton-led researchers found an error in how the age of these stars was estimated. They say the previous findings incorrectly assumed the age of a galaxy was the same as the age of the star that exploded.
The experts also said the South Korean paper failed to account for the mass of host galaxies, a standard correction used in modern cosmology to prove accuracy.

The current idea is essentially an attempt to unify:
emergent spacetime,
gravity,
quantum fields,
Higgs vacuum physics,
and cosmology
into one deeper framework based on vacuum organization.
The key philosophical shift is:
Spacetime may not be fundamental. Geometry may emerge from a deeper quantum-relational vacuum structure.
In this picture, the vacuum is not “empty space.”
The vacuum is the thing from which space itself emerges.
The deepest layer of reality is proposed to be:
a relational quantum structure,
built from correlations/interactions/transition relations,
not from particles moving through pre-existing space.
Distance and locality are therefore not fundamental. Strong relational connectivity effectively becomes “closeness.” Geometry is then the large-scale ordered phase of this vacuum structure.
The framework increasingly resembles a condensed-matter-like picture:
spacetime behaves like a condensate phase,
gravity behaves like elasticity of that condensate,
quantum fields become excitation sectors of it.
The Higgs field becomes extremely important in this interpretation.
Instead of treating the Higgs as “just another field inside spacetime,” the model reinterprets the Higgs vacuum as a local order parameter of the vacuum structure itself.
Meaning:
the Higgs vacuum may partially encode the local organization state of spacetime,
linking vacuum structure, mass generation, geometry, and gravity together.
Gravity is no longer viewed fundamentally as:
a force,
nor purely as classical geometry.
Instead:
Gravity is interpreted as the elastic response of the vacuum/geometric condensate to localized relational strain.
Mass-energy disturbs the vacuum organization. The vacuum reorganizes itself in response. Observers interpret this as curvature, time dilation, and gravity.
One of the more distinctive ideas is the reinterpretation of gravitational time dilation.
Instead of:
“time mysteriously slowing,”
the idea becomes:
Gravity suppresses the local rate of relational/vacuum updating relative to asymptotic vacuum order.
So clocks slow because the local vacuum organization evolves differently.
This naturally leads toward the possibility that:
local update rates can become extremely suppressed near compact objects,
but never fully vanish.
That pushes the framework toward:
horizonless or quasi-horizon ultra-compact objects,
rather than strict classical GR black holes.
The idea is that apparent horizons may emerge effectively, while true ontological disconnection never fully occurs. This could soften:
singularities,
infinite-curvature problems,
and possibly information paradox issues.
At the same time, the model still attempts to preserve:
photon spheres,
gravitational waves,
and approximately GR-like astrophysical behavior.
The framework does NOT treat gravity as purely scalar/Higgs-like. That route was mostly abandoned because observed gravitational waves are clearly spin-2 transverse modes.
Current picture:
the Higgs/vacuum order parameter may encode static vacuum organization,
while propagating gravity corresponds to shear excitations of the emergent geometric condensate.
So gravitons become collective excitations of vacuum geometry itself.
Quantum fields are similarly reinterpreted as excitation sectors of the vacuum condensate:
particles are not tiny billiard balls,
but stable excitation patterns/defects/modes of the deeper vacuum structure.
Importantly, the framework does not currently try to throw away ordinary QFT. Low-energy Standard Model physics is expected to remain approximately intact, while its interpretation changes.
The Big Bang is interpreted not as matter exploding into pre-existing space, but rather as:
emergence/condensation of geometric order itself.
Before this condensation:
ordinary geometry may not exist,
ordinary locality may not exist,
and perhaps ordinary time may not exist.
Inflation is envisioned as rapid growth of geometric coherence/correlation length — essentially rapid ordering of the vacuum structure.
The framework overlaps conceptually with:
emergent spacetime programs,
holography,
induced gravity,
tensor-network geometry,
condensed-matter-inspired gravity,
relational quantum mechanics,
and UV-softened/nonlocal gravity ideas.
But the current synthesis differs in its:
emphasis on vacuum organization,
Higgs vacuum as an order parameter,
“interaction defines geometry” philosophy,
update-rate interpretation of time dilation,
and gravity-as-vacuum-elasticity viewpoint.
The model is still highly speculative and incomplete. It currently has:
ontology,
qualitative mechanisms,
toy relational models,
and some phenomenological intuition,
but not yet:
a complete mathematical formalism,
a derived Standard Model,
or rigorously derived emergent Lorentzian spacetime.
The single biggest unresolved question is probably:
What microscopic relational dynamics naturally produces a stable 3+1D Lorentzian geometric phase?
M. Strømme's "Universal consciousness as foundational field" paper retracted for scientific invalidity
AIP Publishing and the Editors have retracted the referenced article due to concerns about its scientific validity.
The operator T^ which is central to the theory introduced in the paper, has no associated measurable quantity and cannot be verified or falsified through empirical tests. The theory’s predictions are therefore not empirically verifiable. As the theory is postulated and cannot be falsified, it does not meet the standard for scientific validity.
The author did not respond to correspondence regarding this retraction.
