Behold my homelab in all its glory

All of this is on an old 2 post telecom rack that I got from work shortly after the Big Bang

  1. Gigabit switch. 16 ports. Or was it 24? I forget. It's been a while since I looked at it
  2. Fiber internet thingy. 1GB async
  3. Dell OEMR XL 720
    • 24 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 0 @ 2.00GHz (2 Sockets)
    • 128GB RAM not sure on speed, it really doesn't matter
    • 8x 1TB SATA disks in PERC RAID-10
  4. pfSense on a little single board PC thingy
  5. Ooma VoIP box
  6. APC Back-UPS Pro 1500
  7. The all important USB keyboard
  8. An old PC running FreeBSD with a ZFS pool to backup file share
  9. A VGA monitor once used by Moses himself
  10. Water heater. Not critical to the lab

Yes, this is more than a bit tongue in cheek. I'm a Linux SysAdmin/DevOps (whatever they're calling it these days) by trade and this pile is what I play around with at home. It works. It could be prettier and more organized for sure. I'll get around to it someday. Probably.

If you have questions about more specifics then fire away!

Edit: The big Dell server averages around 130W, runs completely cool and nearly silent. I'm not pushing it hard. Electricity is very cheap in Missouri so the electric water heater and this pile of crap really don't cost me much.

Edit 2: Reddit likes to randomly change the text list numbering. I think I fixed that now.

Edit 3: Addressing some common concerns.

This is a basement and there is a floor drain just out of shot.

There are no code violations. The house is 12 years old and passed all inspections.

No cables on the floor are carrying line voltage or even in use. That's just junk I tossed aside over the years.

I love a neat and tidy rack at work. At home I really don't care that much. Hence this pile. :)

In hindsight, the raft was not the best choice...

I did eventually make it to shore just ahead of a sea serpent.
Edit: Normally I wouldn't use the raft, but this was supposed to be a quick jaunt across a narrow channel. I could see the other side from the opposite shore. Naturally as soon as I got in deep water the mother of all storms broke out. It was a WILD ride!

Well hello there

I'm new so seeing one of these is still a little scary. Someday I will drag one of them to land and harvest the goodies.
