Can't get over how bad things used to be (rant)

FTM and I just can't get over how appalling maternity care/infant guidelines used to be for our parents' generation. And that's with now being Still Not That Great.

Routine episiotomies, birthing on your back, put the baby to sleep on their tummy, give cereal at 3 months and don't breastfeed, put baby in their own room and let them cry...

I was totally ignorant of how bad things were, anyone else been told anything from previous generations that is the polar opposite of what we're told now? How did things get like that? I'm talking not that long ago, just like the 90s, supposedly a scientific and rational society?? I just can't get over it. What were they doing? Who was inventing the rules??

Anyone else worry that the same will happen to us? Our kids will be told the opposite of what we're being told now?

How do I learn?

FTM here with a 15 weeker, we do cloth diapers but have always been interested in EC, but never got round to learning what you actually have to do.

So... How do I do it? What resources should I use to learn? I've only seen the go diaper free lady pop up from time to time on my feed- should I get her book? I don't have much time for reading books right now, any low time investment ways to learn would be amazing 🙏

Struggling to cut LO nails

FTM here, I find it so so hard to cut her nails. I've nipped her finger before with nail clippers and it was the worst. It's hard because she sleeps mainly in baby carrier and I can't do it then. And when I put her down to sleep it's dark and can't really see well to do it. So I just use baby nail clipper and do one or two fingers at a time when she's awake and sitting in my lap.

Basically, is there a better way because this is just awful.

15 weeks and still using nipple shields

LO has used nipple shields since 1 week old as when she was born she was latching, but didn't suck. Then at the hospital we accidentally left it too long to feed her and then she was inconsolable with hunger, so we gave her a bottle of formula. I managed to switch to ebf with nipple shields at 1 week old, but here we are, week 15 and she still gets so upset when I try and latch her without the shield.

No weight issues, I've seen feeding support consultants and no tongue tie. I try once a day to feed without the shield- mostly just trying to catch her sleepy and latch her, or slipping off midway. But she always realises and always gets upset 😭

It's working, she's getting fed, I'm not in pain. But it just feels like we're not making progress at all to wean off them, and I'm tired of having to wash them and sterilise and take them everywhere with me.

Anyone else managed to wean off them at a later stage? Just looking for encouragement that it's possible and to keep trying. 😭

What do I do with my 3 month old?

FTM here- what am I supposed to do with these looooong wake windows? I sing, I play, I help her practice rolling, I carry her in the baby carrier, I do baby massage, I give her a bath, I take her out in the pram.... And there's still loads of time left over, any ideas for 3 month old activities ?!?
