Can-Do White Chicken Chili
I'm feeling under the weather, so I want a comforting home-cooked meal. However, I live alone, so I'd have to cook a meal myself, which I don't really wanna do. This is what I make for this. It's called 'can-do' chili because more than half the recipe is dumping in cans--you don't even have to measure most of it.
It's tasty, comforting when sick like chicken noodle soup and with just enough spice to clear your sinuses. It's great in both hot and cold weather--I remember it more when it's winter but randomly crave it more in the summer. It's simple, great for beginner cooks and friendly to many disabilities! Keeps very well in both the frridge and freezer.
INGREDIENTS
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 cup chopped onion (feel free to buy pre-diced, especially if you're feeling bad like I am)
2 cans chicken broth (14.5 oz
1 can white northern beans (15 oz)
1 can chopped green chilies (4 oz; often in with the ethnic/Hispanic food rather than other canned veggies)
2 cans chopped cooked chicken (1 cup, or you can use bits from a deconstructed rotisserie chicken)
1 can corn (15oz)
1 can slices potatoes (15 oz, optional)
1 Tablespoon chili powder (not to non-Americans--this is NOT the same thing as chile powder! it is a seasoning mix!!!)
1 teaspoon ground cumin
INSTRUCTIONS
- Put all the olive oil into a saucepan
- Turn the heat to medium-high (about a 7 on a scale to 10, if that's how yours displays it)
- Stir in all the onion, cook while stirring until tender. 5-10ish minutes, they will cook more later anyways
- Stir in literally everything else. You can drain or not drain all the canned stuff, it doesn't matter
- Reduce heat to medium (5 on a scale to 10)
- Let simmer for about 15 minutes, or until you can smell it from the other room through a stuffed nose
Serve with sour cream, cilantro, shredded cheese, cornbread if you want. Or don't, I'm not because I'm lazy, I'm just pairing it with more sudafed then going to sleep
PLEASE take breaks when you need/want to
Just had to run to medical bc someone couldn’t stop puking in the cooling center, but apparently EMS is backed up w all the fainters. Consider the medical resources of this fest already overtaxed, do anything you can to not need them.
If you do, try and make it to the tent, because it sounds like we don’t have enough circling EMS teams for people just around
Any recs for websites that do reliable last-minute discount travel, preferbaly in bundles?
I've heard tell of places that will do "here's a super-sale for this ticket that's in 4 hours!" I'd love to try this, the price plus the spontaneity of it seems perfect for me. Any rec for sites that do this, where its reliably good discounts (as in, not just 5% off full price)? Bonus if there's any place that will bundle it with also cheap lodging and return flights, though I'm not confident that exists at all.
Thanks in advance!
What’s the best/worst line you’ve read in a note?
Almost a year later, I still remember the patient who with moderate abdominal pain and constipation. Note from specialist mentioned that the “eyes are tender to palpation” and then called the differential “ominous”.
Thoughts on how to hang Venetian-style masks?
I have a ton of Venetian/Mardi Gras style masks I want on the wall, but I can't figure out how to put them there. Some tie in the back with a ribbon, but if I use that, they tip forward, and some of the masks use handheld sticks instead of ties anyways. Someone suggested hanging them on nails, but the only part where that would work (the eyehole) is too far away from the wall.
I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to do this? Ideally, if possible, I'd like a way that isn't super visible from the front and leaves minimal wall damage, but I understand if that's asking too much.
Thanks in advance!
What's up with my weird wear pattern?
My left shoe is wearing out through the sole at the big toe. It started about six weeks ago. I now have two pairs of sneakers (one Sketchers, one Nike) that have a hole all the way through the bottom (pics in comments). I had previously owned, and regularly worn, these shoes for over a year with no issue.
My left socks are also wearing out at the great toe easily. My socks switch between left and right feet (like normal) and they never form a hole when being worn on the right foot.
Other things perhaps of note:
-no recent changes to activity, I go for a two mile walk maybe a few times a week. I work from home so most of the time I don't wear any shoes. I should be getting very minimal wear and tear on these.
-I recently got a pedicure in case it somehow helped (it didn't), so there's no rough skin/jagged nail that could be tearing at it.
-I am not overweight and I haven't been recently being carrying anything heavy, no extra pressure on the soles.
The only answer that makes any sense is a significant change in gait, but honestly I can't see it? I don't have any new aches in my muscles/joints that I'd expect to accompany a weird gait, and frankly I can't figure out what gait would put a ton of pressure on just one toe anyways.
I've tried to google it, but all that comes up is wearing out at the top of the shoes, through the box. Mine is through the sole.
Any answers, advice, tips to prevent it in my next pair would be appreciated! Thanks for your time
Where to ask about shoes wearing out weird?
Hi! Okay, I know this isn't the subreddit for this question, you guys are clearly an appreciation group rather than an advice group, but I don't know which subreddit this question would go in? Maybe one of you can point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance if you have any advice, including just letting me know which communities might be able to help with this, or if there's some job in real life who deals with issues like this?
How did free and enslaved Black people act when in the same house?
I recently went to the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, and it mentioned that Poe’s childhood home had four enslaved people working in the house and one free Black man who was paid.
Do we know how they would’ve treated each other? Was there solidarity or were there strict class divisions within this group? Could the slaves have gotten punished for being too informal to the free man?
I’m wondering if we have any first person accounts, particularly from the view of Black people, about how these two groups treated each other.
How to improve my rice-cooker onions?
So typically I just sautee them with all my other veggies and it’s good, but I’m trying some other things with less success and was wondering if there’s some known secret/solution to this
So I’m, steaming them in the top basket of my rice cooker. All the other veggies are good, but I’m not like the flavor of steamed onion. And I’d prefer to figure out something rather than still satire the onion and then have to clean that pan. Is there some technique/specific type of onion/flavoring that would fix this?
