BI-RADS 4A after mammogram/ultrasound — palpable 3.6 cm lump, biopsy tomorrow, trying not to panic
My wife (early 40s) recently found a palpable lump in her left breast and had a mammogram + ultrasound done. The report came back BI-RADS 4A (low suspicion), and she is scheduled for an ultrasound-guided core biopsy tomorrow.
We are obviously anxious and trying not to catastrophize while waiting, so I wanted to ask whether anyone here has had a similar BI-RADS 4A result and what the outcome ended up being.
Some details from the report:
- Heterogeneously dense breasts
- Left breast lesion at 4:00 position measuring approximately 3.6 x 1.3 x 2.6 cm
- Described as predominantly hypoechoic with some benign features, but also “edge shadow” and mild perilesional vascularity
- No suspicious microcalcifications
- No architectural distortion
- No suspicious axillary lymph nodes seen
- Multiple additional small bilateral nodules/cysts described as likely benign
The radiologist categorized it as BI-RADS 4A and recommended biopsy.
She also started HRT about 2 months ago, so we’re wondering whether hormonal changes could potentially have made an existing benign lesion more noticeable.
If anyone has had a similar BI-RADS 4A experience (benign or malignant), especially with a larger palpable lump but otherwise reassuring imaging features, we’d really appreciate hearing how things turned out and what the next steps were.
