Sinatra album cover <3 just too cool. I Hope it's a smooth day for y'all :)

The ideas behind this song have been rolling around in my head for a long time now.

Getting it written was inspired by some recent events in life the family is working through together that has me thinking of it all.

And recent inspiration also came from watching the anime "Witch Hat Altier" :) which had just got me thinking about how like, art and music, it all just gets better over time. But the wait is the worst. And then it got me thinking about the fact that someday theres gonna be beautiful things made that I won't get a chance to experience.

And the central idea behind the song was inspired by these thoughts and from a quote from someone who's work I really respected and enjoyed, Christopher Hitchens, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and worked through it publicly.

"it will happen to all of us that at some point you will get tapped on the shoulder and told, not just that the party is over, but slightly worse, the partys going on, but you have to leave, and its going on without you."

Really just sums it up I think. I wanted to say it out loud.

The artwork is inspired by the concept of Memento mori: "Memento mori (Latin for "remember [that you have] to die")[2] is an artistic symbol or trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death.[2] The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity and Christianity, and appeared in funerary art and architecture from the medieval period onwards.

The most common motif is a skull, often accompanied by bones. Often, this alone is enough to evoke the trope, but other motifs include a coffin, hourglass, or wilting flowers to signify the impermanence of life. Often, these would accompany a different central subject within a wider work, such as portraiture; however, the concept includes standalone genres such as the vanitas and Danse Macabre in visual art and cadaver monuments in sculpture."

I wanted to just surround the typical skull imagery with things that signify impermanence, the clock, the bubbles, the flowers, the fruit, but also things that symbolize what make life fun, the games, the music, the food.

The music, as I was workign trhough it, there were generations where i was capturing a style i later wanted to blend in, like i was prompting straight gospel and bluegrass for awhile, and damn there were some beautiful generations in there, it was at one of those places where the damn thing felt so good it was just choices at that point, and it was hard to decide where to take it. i could have gone plainer with the music but still large, the vocals could have just been belting, it could have been cinematic as hell.

But though I wanted to go with something light, bright, but earnest, and though I def felt that this song deserved to be palatable, I also wanted to try to make it interesting, i guess?

I dunno, in a song talking about beautiful art, it really struck me this tool lets us do such cool things, make interesting blends, play with vocals and instrumentation, i felt that deserved to be displayed a bit, and i wanted to make it true to me too, so i ended up with this kinda blend of the digitized layering in the vocals with touches of the gospel choir too, and i really like that blend in the vocals, and i pulled in a lot of the kinda "folktronica" effects, pings and digital sounds and stuff in the instrumentation.

But still, it hope it feels large enough for the idea, for the feelings, but also fun, and you know, typical but not too typical. if that makes sense haha.

Making it made me think how its all going to keep evolving, and all the cool things people are going to make with these tools in teh future.

I hope i did it a bit of justice.

DUBSTEP!!!!!!

Dubstep can be heavy, weird, dark, playful, futuristic, grimy, beautiful, aggressive, mechanical, emotional, cinematic, chaotic, or completely ridiculous.

At its core, dubstep is all about bass, space, rhythm, tension, and release. Big sub-bass, half-time grooves, syncopated drums, wobble basses, growls, glitches, chops, drops, weird sound design, and that delicious moment where everything pulls back right before the floor falls out.

You could make:

• a filthy brostep banger
• a dreamy melodic dubstep song
• a cyberpunk chase theme
• a horror dubstep track
• a video game boss battle
• a cute kawaii dubstep chaos song
• a dubstep x metal track
• a dubstep x orchestral track
• a dubstep x whatever genre or instrument blend your heart tells you NEEDS that loud crunchy BASS!

(If you had your heart set on "grand piano" or "awe" from the poll, maybe challenge yourself to bring one or both into your dubstep track!)

For maybe some inspiration, here are a few different ways artists have approached dubstep and bass-heavy music:

“Like A Bitch” is a strong reference for the aggressive, festival-ready side of modern dubstep. It is loud, punchy, mechanical, and built around nasty bass sounds that feel like they are physically chewing through the track.

“Energy Drink” is a great example of colorful, hyper-detailed modern sound design. It is playful, technical, glitchy, bright, and ridiculous in a way that shows how dubstep can be heavy without only being dark.

“Bonfire” brings a big rowdy festival energy with reggae/ragga flavor, heavy drops, and pure chaos. It is a good reference for people who want dubstep to feel like a party, a riot, and a cartoon explosion all at once.

“Cockney Thug” is a great reference for the louder, cheekier, more aggressive side of dubstep. It is wobbly, rude, playful, and full of that grimey bass-face energy.

“Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” is one of the biggest gateway tracks for modern American dubstep / brostep. It is explosive, glitchy, dramatic, and packed with the kind of sound design that made a whole generation want to make bass music.

Flux Pavilion — “I Can’t Stop”

“I Can’t Stop” shows the more melodic, anthem-like side of dubstep. The drop is huge, but the track also has a memorable emotional hook, proving bass music can feel massive and weirdly sentimental at the same time.

“Bass Head” is a strong reference for the sub-heavy, speaker-rattling side of dubstep and bass music. The track is built around the feeling of low-end as the main event: huge bass pressure, dark atmosphere, and the kind of drop that makes the song feel less like a melody and more like a machine shaking the room.

You do not have to copy these songs or stay in one lane. They are just starting points for thinking about how wide dubstep can be: dark and minimal, loud and aggressive, melodic and emotional, cinematic and huge, glitchy and experimental, silly and chaotic, or completely unexpected.

The only real challenge is this:

Make the bass matter.

SKA

Ska can be upbeat, brassy, bouncy, rebellious, goofy, political, romantic, chaotic, sunny, anxious, playful, or full of pure dance-floor momentum.

It can sound like a horn section sprinting down the street, a punk band that discovered syncopation, a smoky Jamaican dancehall in the 1960s, a checkerboard 2 Tone club, a sweaty third-wave basement show, a cartoon chase scene, or a whole group of people deciding that the only correct response to life getting weird is to dance harder.

At its core, ska is built around that offbeat “chank” rhythm — the guitar or keyboard hits on the upbeats, giving the music its bouncing, forward-moving feel. Add horns, walking bass, organ, punk energy, reggae roots, soul flavor, shout-along hooks, or whatever weird fusion you want, and suddenly you’ve got a whole world to play with.

You could make:

• a classic Jamaican ska-inspired track
• a 2 Tone-style song with sharp suits and political bite
• a ska-punk anthem
• a goofy horn-fueled party song
• a romantic upbeat heartbreak song
• a surfy ska track
