LSC MUSIC JAM #9 - SKA!
Hello Everyone!
Thank you all for participating in LSC’s eighth music jam - “Steelpan”
This was such a fun instrument challenge, and I loved seeing people find different ways to make that bright metallic sound matter.
If you haven’t already, make sure to go here to post the song you made for Music Jam #8! I want to make sure we keep them all in the same space so we can look back, maybe make playlists, and keep building a little archive of everything we’ve made together:
But with all of that out of the way…
The polling has concluded for LSC MUSIC JAM #9 and the Community has spoken:
For LSC’s MUSIC JAM #9 we will be exploring:
SKA
Ska can be upbeat, brassy, bouncy, rebellious, goofy, political, romantic, chaotic, sunny, anxious, playful, or full of pure dance-floor momentum.
It can sound like a horn section sprinting down the street, a punk band that discovered syncopation, a smoky Jamaican dancehall in the 1960s, a checkerboard 2 Tone club, a sweaty third-wave basement show, a cartoon chase scene, or a whole group of people deciding that the only correct response to life getting weird is to dance harder.
At its core, ska is built around that offbeat “chank” rhythm — the guitar or keyboard hits on the upbeats, giving the music its bouncing, forward-moving feel. Add horns, walking bass, organ, punk energy, reggae roots, soul flavor, shout-along hooks, or whatever weird fusion you want, and suddenly you’ve got a whole world to play with.
You could make:
- a classic Jamaican ska-inspired track
- a 2 Tone-style song with sharp suits and political bite
- a ska-punk anthem
- a goofy horn-fueled party song
- a romantic upbeat heartbreak song
- a surfy ska track
- a spy-theme ska groove
- a cartoonishly chaotic ska song
- an anime opening with ska horns
- a ska x pop-punk track
- a ska x reggae fusion
- a ska x swing experiment
- a ska x metal disasterpiece
- or whatever your strange little checkerboard heart starts skanking to XD
For maybe some inspiration, here are a few different ways artists have approached ska and ska-adjacent sounds:
The Skatalites — “Guns of Navarone”
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Skatalites+Guns+of+Navarone
“Guns of Navarone” is a classic Jamaican ska instrumental and a great place to hear the roots of the sound. Bright horns, steady bounce, danceable rhythm, and that cool, effortless early-ska energy.
Prince Buster — “Al Capone”
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Prince+Buster+Al+Capone
“Al Capone” is another foundational ska reference, full of attitude, character, and rhythm. It shows how ska can feel playful and tough at the same time, with a groove that keeps everything moving.
The Specials — “A Message to You Rudy”
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Specials+A+Message+to+You+Rudy
“A Message to You Rudy” is one of the great 2 Tone gateway songs. It has that relaxed but sharp ska/reggae feel, a memorable horn line, and a cool sense of style that helped define a whole era of ska revival.
Madness — “One Step Beyond”
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Madness+One+Step+Beyond
“One Step Beyond” is fast, silly, infectious, and impossible to sit still through. It is a perfect reference for the frantic, fun, crowd-moving side of ska.
Reel Big Fish — “Sell Out”
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Reel+Big+Fish+Sell+Out
“Sell Out” is a classic third-wave ska-punk reference: big horns, punchy guitars, sarcastic lyrics, and a chorus built to be shouted by a room full of people having too much fun.
You do not have to copy these songs or stay in one lane. They are just starting points for thinking about how wide ska can be: Jamaican ska, rocksteady, 2 Tone, ska-punk, pop-ska, horn-heavy rock, punk, reggae fusion, swing, surf, anime chaos, or something totally unexpected.
Our ninth LSC Music Jam - “Ska” will conclude on 08/22/2026.

Tart & Sweet by Koa-Sama - a song i wrote after biting into a bland strawberry - something that should never happen to anyone. Its got a bit of a math-rock feel with some steelpan flavor, I hope you dig it as much as I do!
The sounds i chose to play with for this song were inspired by listening to artificers music in our community listening parties over at AIUnderground, and the steelpan Music Jam over at Latent Space Club!
I just dropped the video on my youtube, if you want to give it a like, give me a follow all the good stuff :) and of course if you prefer connecting on suno you can give me a like follow or comment over there too, and it looks like its already up on spotify and should be up on wherever you listen to music very soon!
I bought a basket of berries
From the market down the street
They were sitting in the sunlight
lookin' like just a treat
I saved the best one for the walk home
Like it was grown just for me
Bit down like a believer
Praying for something sweet
Praying for something sweet
Praying for something sweet!
there should never be such a thing
As a disappointing strawberry
A butterfly without its wings
Or a song that you can’t sing
You should never have to run, (run, run, run, run, run run)
Through the rocks with your bare feet, (feet, feet, feet, feet feet feet,)
The grass should all be soft and green,
The fruit should all be tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
i feel these tiny letdowns
stack on all the ones beneath
and one bland berry
can ruin ma whole damn week
Cuz There should never be such a thing
As a disappointing straw-berry
A butterfly without its wings
Or a song that you can’t sing
You should never have to run, (run, run, run, run run run)
Through the rocks with your bare feet (feet feet feet feet feet feet)
The grass should all be soft and green
The fruit should all be tart and sweet
I know it’s only fruit
I know it’s not that deep
but sometimes the smallest disappointments
Hit the deepest parts of me
Cuz There should never be such a thing
As a disappointing straw-berry
A butterfly withooout its wings
Or a song that you can’t sing
And You should never have to run, (run, run, run, run)
Through the rocks with your bare feet, (feet, feet, feet, feet)
The grass should all be soft and green
The fruit should all be tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
Tart and sweet
We're here. You WILL be heard. <3 Thank yall for the past year at AI Underground - Thank yall for being a part of these spaces, where we encourage each other to create and share <3 How did we get so lucky?
In celebration of 1 year at AI Underground, our amazing community member and artist Kila Sün put together this absolutely lovely video, that I think says so much about what we are doing over at AI Underground.
The larger internet has felt so cruel to AI artists and creators. We built a space for us to gather, share, celebrate, get inspired, learn and grow together.
And I have just felt so LUCKY this past year, to have met so many incredible genuine people, to have had so much wonderful expressive unique and compelling art brought right to me, through these AI art positive spaces, through our threads and our listening parties, through the PEOPLE who put themselves out there every week and share their art and music.
Thank you so much to our server leaders and admins and moderators for putting this space together and maintaining and organizing it all. I know it takes a lot, and that its a work of love, something we do because we know how much it means to so many people to have a space like this.
And thank you ALL for coming together every day to share and celebrate each other.
Here's to another year at AI:Underground!
And here's to another year of ALL of us, in ALL of our AI art positive spaces, continuing to put ourselves out there, continuing to express ourselves, and by putting ourselves out there, making other people feel like THEY can create something and share it too.
Here's to building a positive culture around our art, where we CELEBRATE each other's creation and exploration and expression.
You all deserve more words. I hope you keep creating <3
