Trick Dog Advanced Clarification: Lassie Pose

Curious on how others interpret this. In Trick Dog advanced there are two trick options listed that seem the same to me.
— Lassie Pose (sit pretty, bent paw)
— Sit Pretty add Lassie Pose.

My questions are a) how are these two things different, and b) what is Lassie pose exactly?

The evaluator checklist doesn’t clarify it either.

Question on fit dog points item - unique to you and your dog

I’m hoping to check the box on item D below, but need clarification on what items are needed and what qualifies?

My dog is obsessed with playing herding/fetch with her jolly ball, we probably play 30min a day (over 3 daily sessions), and I feel like that should count.

Would I be able to check “other” and include “herding /fetch”?

D. UNIQUE TO YOU AND YOUR DOG
[ ] Swimming [ ] Parkour - (IDPA - Novice level)
[ ] Other_

*edit to add* we just passed our first Fit Dog 1 class so only need 2 more points for bronze.

How to find AKC fit dog pack / group walks?

Hi! I’m working towards our fit dog title, and just passed our first fit dog 1 class. I’m trying to check one of the boxes for points on the group runs/walks/hikes but I’m having a hard time finding organized ones near me. Any suggestions on where to look?

B. RUNS - complete at least 1 organized community run. Document with
wearable, smart phone, etc. Distance = at least 1 mile (e.g. Turkey Trot)

C. WALKS AND HIKES (you may choose either an independent or group walk)
—- INDEPENDENT WALKS/HIKES (on your own)
Walk 75 minutes per week for 8 weeks with dog (document)
—- GROUP WALKS/HIKES
Complete 1 or more group walks (e.g., AKC FIT DOG Club walk)
(at least 1 mile per walk)

UKC conformation question

I’m interested in showing my Australian cattle dog (just for fun and experience). She meets all the breed standards and I can 100% confirm she comes from cattle dog parentage. Unfortunately her parents don’t have papers, which means she doesn’t. She is registered as PAL with AKC, and is spayed.

I’ve heard through dog friends, and some light googling, that UKC is more lenient with allowing you to register your breed by proving breed standards through photos instead of papers. We would show in the “altered” class. I called UKC today and the person I talked to was like “uh no” but I didn’t feel like they understood my question.

Does anyone have information on how to register your dog for UKC conformation without breed papers? Or is this a sport I just won’t be able to compete in.

Dog sports setup!

Ruby is getting better at waiting between dog sports trials, and I’m pretty proud of my setup! That being said, we still have to find an area wayyyy far away from other dogs so she can actually relax haha Still a cattle dog!

Fetch and FastCAT

Yesterday was the first day of the weekend trials. We tried fetch novice for the first time, and while she loves to play fetch at home, we had a DQ our first time around… But after I reread the rules and we practiced a bit we were able to get our first qualifying score!

The trial also included a midnight madness fast CAT event, running under the lights, which was a new experience. It was really packed, and I think running at the end of the day, made her a little slower, but she still achieved her BCAT title and this cute rosette!

Anyone else here do dog sports with their ACD? I feel like I don’t see a lot when I’m there…

Tips for first fetch trial

Looking for tips!
My ACD is a fetch freak, she loves it! We have worked on her bringing the ball back to my hand, and she is pretty consistent.

We are going to a fetch trial next week, and I’m confident she can pass fetch novice no problem. Most likely intermediate too. Past that, I don’t think she can do the “sit and wait for the ball to hit the ground before releasing, no holding collar” yet.

It’s a three day trial, two sessions per day (under two judges). Day 1 we will go for novice, day 2 we will go for intermediate. Planning to skip day 3 unless we have to repeat any of the tests.

I would love to hear tips and experiences from anyone who has done this before! She loves a regular tennis ball, I should be fine with that - yes?

Crates for trials?

We are starting to do more dog sports and I have been lugging around my ACDs wire crate, and it’s just super heavy.

I don’t currently plan to leave her in the crate without me there, but I want to give her a place to relax - her crate is her happy place. Also, I will be putting her fan out and this keeps her in one spot.

What crates are yall using that aren’t super huge and clunky at trials?

Update: WOW! I am so blown away at everyone’s feedback and willingness so help. Thank you!

ASPCA poison control hotline

TIL that there is a dedicated poison control phone number for dogs by the ASPCA (US only). The number is 1 (888) 426-4435.

After Ruby here ate half of my dark chocolate granola breakfast bar from the bottom of my purse today, I called the emergency vet who was on the fence if we needed to come in. They gave me the above number, and I was able to talk to a vet who did an ingredient review and determined we could treat this at home. Apparently they help with all sorts of plant, medication, and other poison questions.

It did cost me $100 to call, but that’s still half the price of the emergency visit. I called my normal vet who advised that they would have just called the same poison control number to get more details.

If it was a worse case, the poison control center would have worked with my local vet to send all the details on the chemicals she ingested to make a treatment plan immediately.

Anyway, something to keep in mind if you’re not close to an emergency vet!

BALL

Ruby presents to the dogs and humans of Reddit, the most perfect ball that’s ever existed. There are many like it, but this one is hers.

Tap light 💡

Working on trick number 4 for Ruby’s AKC Trick Dog Advanced title, turning on a tap light!

Not pictured, her slamming the light on and off like a maniac trying to get more treats.

ULPT request: jerk excon @ dog park

Looking for ULPT to make a nut job at the dog park stop showing up when I’m there because he is insane.

We go to the dog park every morning before work, and have a nice group of dog and people friends. My dog is super sweet, and I’m very mindful of unknown people and dogs- we will just leave if there’s a new element we don’t feel comfortable with, no big deal.

We started to try going on a weekend morning and encountered a terrible older man with a group of mid20s guys who loudly talked about their recent crimes (check washing and tax fraud) as well as how “women don’t want a man anymore, who is going to cook for me”. Whatever, we just go to the other side of the park. Also, his dog is very sweet. It did get creepy and we ended up leaving.

I saw him a couple more random weekend days, and it’s obvious he is nuts -losing his mind over other people’s dogs playing with his dog or the dogs ball (it’s a dog park). The dog doesn’t care, and honestly is a good dog, but he is so nuts we just leave when we see him there and avoid going on the weekends.

Everything changed today, he showed up with his dog (no group) during my regular weekday morning visits (we go 3x a week). I shared my concerned with the group we regularly play with, and we moved to the other side of the park. The crazy man proceeded to throw his precious ball across the park into our group. He started hollering, so I got it from my dog once and brought it to him (it’s not like she stole it, she gave it right back), and made a joke about everyone wanting to play together. He said something snarky and I suggested he throw it to another side of the park. He threw it to our group again, and our dogs played with the ball and his dog politely. He lost his mind, yelling to “get his ball away from that dog”. After trying to ignore him, I finally threw his ball back and said it’s not a good idea to bring a ball to a dog park if you don’t want other dogs playing too.

He lost it on me (F) calling me every name in the book and stating he wasn’t afraid of going back to jail. “You don’t want to mess with me, you don’t know who you are messing with you ********”. Anyway, you get the gist. I said he was being inappropriate and went back the far end of the park. Then he did it AGAIN. It was so bad I said he needed to leave me alone or I was calling the police. I ended up leaving and calling the police.

I waited for them at the entrance of the main park (way away from this dude) and they said they couldn’t do anything because it’s a public park and he didn’t show a gun or physically hurt anyone. I am planning to avoid this dude, but he isn’t going to ruin my pre-work park mornings. He can have the weekends there. I just want my weekday mornings.

I can get his license plate number easily, know he was in jail, and know of a bunch of crimes his group was bragging about. I don’t want to get myself involved with wackadoodles who will take this too far. I just want this guy to not visit the park before 9am on weekday mornings (or at all but whatever). The other people I meet with there also hate him, but many are elderly and just leave when they see him.

Open to suggestions!

Update: Seriously all, thank you immensely for your comments. I was so angry and upset about this today, and reading your comments somehow helps me feel seen and acknowledged.

Our AKC trick dog intermediate submission

The video is about 2 min, so buckle in. This is an edited down version of our official submission for the AKC trick dog intermediate title, and we passed!

Trick training has been amazing for Ruby, my 1yr old ACD. We work 15 min at lunch every day, and it’s great for her little crazy brain (and my sanity)

Starting rally, what do you wish you knew?

Starting rally training with my 1.5yo ACD. We have done CGCA and ATT, and are in novice agility classes (no where close to competing).

I feel like she would be great at Rally, but there are no classes near me… so we will train at home! There is a Novice trial in 6 weeks, and I thought - why not give it a shot.

What do you wish you knew as a beginner? And do you have any tips for getting started?

Just got the professional photos from our fast CAT trial last month, this was her very first timed run and she LOVED it! You can see me celebrating in the background 🤣. She is really a natural at it, I’m so proud 💕💕 Anyone else have an ACD that runs Fast CAT?
