Spectrum NCTI Question

Hello fellow Spectrum field friends!

I'm looking to transfer into Field Operations in the future and was hoping to get a head start on the NCTI material if possible.

I've made friends in both Field and Maintenance, and a few people have told me that, before they even transferred into Maintenance as FT, they were able to start the NCTI coursework right away and begin working toward their progression. I've also heard that some people start working through Field Tech NCTI material while they're still in the training class so they're already prepared for the next progression.

Since I'm currently a non-field employee, I'm wondering if I'm able to start the Field Technician NCTI coursework before actually applying/transferring into the position.

I was told by friends that I be able to access and work through the course material, but I wouldn't be able to take the official exam until I'm actually in the Field position. I was also told that I would just need to keep requesting extensions through the NCTI chat if necessary.

Does that sound correct? And no policy prohibited me from doing that..(Hopefully)

I'm mainly curious if anyone who transferred into Field from another Spectrum department has done something similar or anything related

I'd really appreciate any information or advice. Thanks!

Looking for some advice from experienced cable technicians!

Hi folks,

I'm currently working at a cable company in an office/coordinator role, and I'm planning to transfer into a Field Technician position once I hit my one-year mark. My goal is to eventually move into Maintenance.

I'm looking for advice from current or former Field Techs. My background is a little different—I have a bachelor's degree in Business/IT, a lot of previous customer service experience, and I've learned the fundamentals of HFC/cable systems through my current role and training. However, I have almost no hands-on field experience.

One thing that gives me some confidence is that I tend to learn quickly and pick up new concepts well. I've done very well in my current role, both in terms of learning the job and my overall performance metrics, so I'm hoping that ability will help me transition into field work.

Physically, I'm in decent shape. I've done manual labor jobs during college summers, so I'm not afraid of hard work, but I definitely wouldn't consider myself a super muscular person.

I've already heard plenty about the driving, difficult customers, and going into people's homes. What I'm more curious about is:

  • How physically demanding is the job on a daily basis?
  • How difficult are the weather conditions, crawl spaces, attics, ladders, and other physical aspects? Is it something most new techs eventually adapt to, or is it as rough as people make it sound?
  • How steep is the learning curve? I understand the fundamentals of how cable systems work, but when it comes to actually installing, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment in the field, I'd basically be starting from scratch.
  • Looking back, what do you wish you had known before becoming a Field Tech?

Any advice, tips, or things you wish someone had told you before starting would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 😊

Questions Regarding a Lateral Transfer

Hello everyone,

I'm curious if anyone here has experience transferring from an office-based role into Field Operations.

I've been with the company for almost a year and have already completed all of the available progression in my current role. While I appreciate the stability and enjoy working with my team, I've realized that the day-to-day work isn't something I see myself doing long term. At this point, I'm more interested in pursuing a career in the field rather than moving into a leadership or management position.

My current goal is to transfer into a Field Technician role and, eventually, move into Maintenance or ISP if the opportunity comes along.

My biggest question is how pay is handled for internal transfers. Based on conversations I've had and my own calculations, my current hourly rate is roughly comparable to what a Field Tech 3 or 4 might earn after progressing through the FT role.

For those who have made a similar transition, how does compensation typically work? Does an internal transfer usually start at the same pay rate as a new external hire, or is previous company pay taken into account? If your current rate is already higher, do you keep that rate while completing the required NCTI training and progressing through the Field Tech levels?" For exmaple, Since I'm making the FT 3 rate right now, I don't get anything for completing the level 2 and 3 progressions. But do I still get a raise for doing 4, 5, and 6?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this process or has knowledge of how it works. Feel free to reply here or send me a private message if you'd rather not discuss it publicly.

(Any additional info is always appreciated too!)

Thanks in advance!

Win 10 2nd monitor no HDMI signal?

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT

I was playing Escape from Tarkov this morning when both of my monitors suddenly went black and the entire system appeared to freeze. I could still hear audio, but I had no display output. After restarting, everything seemed fine and I was able to continue playing for a while. However, when I came back from breakfast, my second monitor was completely dark and displayed "No HDMI Signal."

Since then, I've done several rounds of testing using DDU in Safe Mode and reinstalling drivers. Every time I perform a clean uninstall, one of three things happens:

  1. Windows Driver Updates Disabled + No Adrenalin Installation
    • My second monitor remains dark.
    • Only my primary monitor works.
  2. Windows Driver Updates Enabled + AMD Adrenalin Installation
    • Sometimes Adrenalin says a Windows update is in progress and won't let me install the driver.
    • Other times I can install theAdrenlin driver after waiting, but my second monitor goes dark either before or after restarting the PC.
  3. Windows Driver Updates Enabled + No Adrenalin Installation
    • After some time, Windows appears to install its own driver automatically.
    • My second monitor starts working again.

I'm not very knowledgeable about GPU drivers, so I'm trying to understand what's happening. I mainly use AMD Adrenalin for game filters and settings, but I've often heard that AMD's drivers can be problematic while Windows-installed drivers are usually outdated.

Is it normal for the Windows driver to work while the latest AMD driver causes issues? Has anyone experienced something similar with a 7800 XT or found a solution?

Any advice would be appreciated.
