I haven’t worked on many art projects over this year, but recently I started working on one for this game that I liked. I was trying to fall asleep, but after half an hour I still really couldn’t. I remember watching a video saying that if you can’t fall asleep in 30 minutes, get up and do something else until you’re tired. I then spent the next 90 minutes cutting up construction paper to whatever compelled to me the most. Somehow, I think it worked. What are your thoughts? 👀
I finished the art and cutouts for the first section of my
NITW poster!
Having to cut out the actual “Angus” part was tedious. What I did was print a sprite of character, then *precisely* cut out the face. I then stick-glued it onto some construction paper, and cut that out the same way. The annoying thing about separating the print paper from the construction paper is that it’ll tear off some bits with it. This not only makes the construction paper less appealing from one side, but it also weakens the structural integrity and makes it flimsier. This was really prevalent when I was making his glasses, where some of the bridge was taken with it, and made it incredibly flimsy. I solved this by glueing a strip of construction paper to the back of it, and that kept everything supported.
I had the most fun creating the decorations for the background, but at the same time I wasn’t sure what to put. I ended up making these stars and constellations stuff, since Angus was interested in that. I drew his star sign, the Fish, on the top left by using some black construction paper and a white colored pencil. I first found out his sign when playing of NITW’s supplementals, Lost Constellations. The other little cutouts were a couple other constellations from the game and some random stars I made. I found it difficult to sort everything onto the paper, so that every area doesn’t look too empty or too crowded. Could’ve used a bit of work, but I like it how it is now.
I love how the piece is going right now! Though, there’s one thing that I’m not sure of just yet. I was experimenting with different outlines to put behind Angus (hence the other photos). I wasn’t sure if it was better to add some stuff behind to add more color and/or make him pop out, or just keep it simple. Let me know what you guys think 👀
My motives for this were simple: my room’s walls are empty and bland and I want to add a personal touch.
I’m currently working on a personal project where I make a poster consisting of the 4 main characters of Night in the Woods, Mae (top left), Gregg (bottom left), Angus (top right), and Bea (bottom left). *Note that the little cutouts in the middle of every square are placeholders, so that I can get a feel of how the colors interact with each other 👀
I had to surf through my mom’s old crafting materials to find most of what I needed. I originally was going to use regular old sketchbook paper as the back to hold everything up, but decided to cut out some black poster board to let everything pop out. The annoying thing is that I wanted all the measurements to be identical to the sketchbook sheet, so I spent a while measuring and cutting all of the paper. Though, I gave a bit of space between the colored squares since not only I couldn’t find a perfect way to fit everything, but also so that it didn’t look too forced together.
It also took me a bit trying to find the best colors to pair with the characters (what was I even supposed to make the background for Gregg??). I wanted Gregg and Angus to have opposite color backgrounds (Orange+Brown, Brown+Orange), but instead chose to give Gregg a red background, similar to his profile picture on the laptop. The other two were sort of monochromatic, and I was at first debating on whether Mae had dark blue fur or black fur (eventually found out it was dark blue).
I’m considering adding different patterns of items to the backgrounds to make them more personalized to the characters, but that’s all up to debate. I would GREATLY appreciate any suggestions for this 👀
This will be my first time creating art out of construction paper, let alone a poster at all! I usually don’t make art, or draw anymore, but I had this sudden rush of creativity one day and decided to make a move.
I will probably be updating here on my progress throughout. Let me know of any suggestions or thoughts!!! 🐎🐎🐎
