First time drawing Mae (ever), using FireAlpaca

I made this in like 10 minutes, so I didn't expect it to be of decent quality. I used to make crumby digital art thumbnails on Kleki when I was younger, but that's about the only experience I have with it. (I think the main thing I messed up with when drawing her was making the eyes too small :,] ) Hopefully I'll be improving overtime and making some awesome digital fanart for this community

Officially the farthest I’ve ever ran

Ran a steady 10:30-11:00 the first 3.5 miles, then walked most of mile 5-6. Ran the last two miles running on nothing but gas 🫩. Still happy though, I feel really accomplished. Eventually, I’ll be able to run this length with no stops between 🥳

What can I do to prepare for a long-slow run?

I’m currently following a running schedule set up by my highschool’s XC coaches. This Saturday, I’ll be run a long-slow run, which is around 7-8 miles. Though, I’ve never ran over 6.5 miles in a single run.
What would be the best way to prepare, and what pace would be okay for this run?
We usually run around 3-5 miles at practice, and last year I hit a sub-24 PR for a 5K race. I would say that a I can comfortably hold a 9:30 pace for a 3-4 miles.

One of my better runs from this week

I’m getting back into cross country after not running the whole summer. I ran a couple times before this run, but I performed better on this one than the others. The day before, I ran a ~10:20 for 3 miles, with a couple stops nearing the middle and the end. For this run, I ran a sub 10 min for 4 miles, with one stop nearing the 3rd split.

I think that’s decent improvement for a single day, but it also could’ve been from some other factors,
The previous run, I ran on a ground trail with a few uphills and downhills (the uphills got me) and it was the middle of the afternoon (~90 degrees). Probably the closest to being a cross country meet. I was also getting familiar with my breathing, so some parts felt unnatural.
This run, I ran in the evening on a flat road trail (~80 degrees). After the first mile, I got a steady breathing pattern (4 steps inhale, 3 steps exhale) and followed that.

Maybe it could’ve been some internal factors that affected how I ran differently those two days, but I would think that the environment also has a big play in running performance. What are your thoughts?

6-letter callsigns starting with B?

I was on the LCWO website and I was looking through the online users section. A couple that stood out to me were three usernames that composed of 6 capital letters & numbers, started with the letter B.
In the past, I heard that the first letter of a ham radio callsign identifies the country it and/or the caller originates from (ex. K for North America, or something like that, I’m not credible on that). I saw the same thing going on with the letters Y, J, O, V, and W (mostly Y). Could these letters mean something on the lines of that, or is it just a random letter assigned when you get your license.

My more code experience so far (question at the end)

I’ve been learning Morse Code ever since March, so about 4 months now, and this is probably one of the coolest pastimes I’ve ever invested in 👀.
When I was first starting out, I was using this one app (on iOS) called Signal, which really helped me to get familiar with the letters. It only took me around a couple weeks to really memorize them and be able to transmit words shown to me. (MorseKey, I just used to play around with, actually transmitting it)
I kept that up for a month, and now every once in a while I’ll practice it. BUT, I recently discovered this one website called LCWO, and I’ve been practicing using the Word Training section for the past couple days. The Word Training section involves listening to Morse code translations of 25 words, and then typing what you heard (in regular language). You get points depending on how well you do, and it gets progressively faster for every word you get correct. I’ve been starting at 20 wpm, and I’ve gone all the way up to 42 wpm at some point
Though, the main thing I’ve noticed was that I usually had to re-listen to the recordings since I could only understand a couple characters at a time (or just lose track entirely). Is this something you just practice, or is there an easier way of comprehending the translations?

Thoughts on handwriting?

I’ve noticed that I tend to exaggerate the extensions on some letters (ex. y, g, j, etc) which I think is pretty cool 👀

Best place to get Sam and Max Merch? (Specifically posters)

Recently I’ve been wanting to liven up my room a bit, and what better way to do that than decorate the walls! I’ve been a fan of Sam and Max for not too long, but I still adore the show and think it would be great to showcase them in my room. That begs the question: are there any specific stores or websites that would offer decently-priced and well-made posters? 🐰🐕

Returning XC-Runner, how is this for a 3 miler?

Went on a run yesterday, and getting ready for the upcoming Cross Country season. My 5K times during XC season were 7:45-8:00 miles. Definitely room for improvement, and I’m considering running longer today. Any thoughts?

I finished the Bea Square!

I finished the 3rd corner of my NitW Poster Project!
(3/4 complete now)
I think that this section came out pretty well. I didn’t make the same mistake of using liquid glue to adhere the face on. What I did have a little trouble on was finding the right pupil color for the eye. I chose this brownish red color, which I would say fits alright.
I experimented a little with the background as well! I originally wanted to add trees and tombstones in reference to the graveyard hangout with Mae and Bea. I went for those beefy forest trees at first, but then switched to the leafless branchy trees, which I think fit better. I had a lot of fun making the trees, even though it was a little tedious (thankfully I stopped at two). I repurposed them for branches at the end, and then I realized that a bit of the white paper was poking out a little.
For some final details, I cut up little squares of a lighter color monochromic to the background to make it look like little stars, which certainly livened up the background. I could picture like, looking up at the sky with branches blocking the way, and the stars in the sky. I’m not sure of a better way to explain it, but either way think it came out well 👀
75% of the way finished, can’t wait to finish and hopefully work on another project! 🥳

I finished the Gregg Square!

A couple weeks ago, I finished the Gregg corner for my NitW poster project. I’m halfway through now 👀

Personally, I don’t think it came out as well as I thought it would’ve. I think the main reason why was because I was trying to experiment with liquid glue (when I usually use stick glue), and that created these weird folds around his face. I also tried to fill a bit more empty space by putting some orange leaves in the background, but it ended up just looking like duck feet 🥹.
Other than that, I had fun working on this section. Gregg’s face came out clean, I made little items referencing some of his key experiences (knife game, eating pizza with the group, “got cups on my ears”, and his old war hat). I hope that the next corner comes out just as good, if not better 🥳

I think something possessed me for 2 hours while creating this

I haven’t worked on many art projects over this year, but recently I started working on one for this game that I liked. I was trying to fall asleep, but after half an hour I still really couldn’t. I remember watching a video saying that if you can’t fall asleep in 30 minutes, get up and do something else until you’re tired. I then spent the next 90 minutes cutting up construction paper to whatever compelled to me the most. Somehow, I think it worked. What are your thoughts? 👀

I finished the Angus square!

I finished the art and cutouts for the first section of my
NITW poster!

Having to cut out the actual “Angus” part was tedious. What I did was print a sprite of character, then *precisely* cut out the face. I then stick-glued it onto some construction paper, and cut that out the same way. The annoying thing about separating the print paper from the construction paper is that it’ll tear off some bits with it. This not only makes the construction paper less appealing from one side, but it also weakens the structural integrity and makes it flimsier. This was really prevalent when I was making his glasses, where some of the bridge was taken with it, and made it incredibly flimsy. I solved this by glueing a strip of construction paper to the back of it, and that kept everything supported.

I had the most fun creating the decorations for the background, but at the same time I wasn’t sure what to put. I ended up making these stars and constellations stuff, since Angus was interested in that. I drew his star sign, the Fish, on the top left by using some black construction paper and a white colored pencil. I first found out his sign when playing of NITW’s supplementals, Lost Constellations. The other little cutouts were a couple other constellations from the game and some random stars I made. I found it difficult to sort everything onto the paper, so that every area doesn’t look too empty or too crowded. Could’ve used a bit of work, but I like it how it is now.

I love how the piece is going right now! Though, there’s one thing that I’m not sure of just yet. I was experimenting with different outlines to put behind Angus (hence the other photos). I wasn’t sure if it was better to add some stuff behind to add more color and/or make him pop out, or just keep it simple. Let me know what you guys think 👀

Currently working on a NITW poster project!

My motives for this were simple: my room’s walls are empty and bland and I want to add a personal touch.

I’m currently working on a personal project where I make a poster consisting of the 4 main characters of Night in the Woods, Mae (top left), Gregg (bottom left), Angus (top right), and Bea (bottom left). *Note that the little cutouts in the middle of every square are placeholders, so that I can get a feel of how the colors interact with each other 👀

I had to surf through my mom’s old crafting materials to find most of what I needed. I originally was going to use regular old sketchbook paper as the back to hold everything up, but decided to cut out some black poster board to let everything pop out. The annoying thing is that I wanted all the measurements to be identical to the sketchbook sheet, so I spent a while measuring and cutting all of the paper. Though, I gave a bit of space between the colored squares since not only I couldn’t find a perfect way to fit everything, but also so that it didn’t look too forced together.

It also took me a bit trying to find the best colors to pair with the characters (what was I even supposed to make the background for Gregg??). I wanted Gregg and Angus to have opposite color backgrounds (Orange+Brown, Brown+Orange), but instead chose to give Gregg a red background, similar to his profile picture on the laptop. The other two were sort of monochromatic, and I was at first debating on whether Mae had dark blue fur or black fur (eventually found out it was dark blue).

I’m considering adding different patterns of items to the backgrounds to make them more personalized to the characters, but that’s all up to debate. I would GREATLY appreciate any suggestions for this 👀

This will be my first time creating art out of construction paper, let alone a poster at all! I usually don’t make art, or draw anymore, but I had this sudden rush of creativity one day and decided to make a move.

I will probably be updating here on my progress throughout. Let me know of any suggestions or thoughts!!! 🐎🐎🐎
