How much do grades truly matter in med school?

Current M1 hoping to pursue a surgical specialty (probably general) at a graded program. I know that STEP scores and rank obviously matter, and by no means am I doing “bad” right now but feeling worried. I’m not sure how much adcoms look at GPAs if they are available and how high they need to be. The averages for the exams have been high, and currently I’m sitting at a 89 average for two courses. I worry I may end one of them w a B and not sure how this would affect me moving forward as I’m sure it may not be my last B in school.

Jornay

Hi!

Does anyone here take Jornay? I was recently prescribed the medication and was hoping for some advice. I have really bad sleep inertia and began taking it to offset that. However I was told that the medication peaks at 8 hours, only to find out that it doesn’t even begin to release until 10 hours and peaks at 14. The issue I’m running into is that

  1. I was never told what time to take it just “at bedtime” which to me can be a range of things
  2. If I take it around 8-9PM, then when I wake up at 8AM and take my adderall XR, both medications are peaking at the same time and I feel awesome

Overall I just wasn’t really informed by my doctor on how to take the meds and although I have an appt coming up soon, just wondering if anyone has personal experience w the medication and how it has gone for them.

Calling any med students/doctors

Hii

I recently started medical school and am looking for some advice from any med students or doctors that might also have IH. I know the first month of school is a lot of adjustment but I’m worried about my performance and if I will be able to keep up. There is so much material and I really can’t sleep as more than 8 hours it seems. However the last few weeks when I was sleeping 7 hours a night, towards the end of the week I would get very physically ill almost. This happens a lot when I don’t sleep a lot for a few days in a row and I’ll feel like I’m gonna pass out, get hot flashes, and start to feel nauseous. Not sure if anyone has also felt this and what they have done to help.

Overall just wondering if anyone with a demanding career or schooling like this has been able to perform at a high level and how they have done so. I’m someone who needs to study a bit, I’m not super naturally intelligent, and I worry that I’m not gonna be able to do this with IH.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

DO vs gap year(s)

alright well here goes:

I got into a few DO schools this cycle, waitlisted for 2 MD (one of them has rejected me alr), and 1 MD that is on accreditation probation. I have committed to the DO school, which has quite a good match list. They matched neurosurgery this year, and consistently match some derm, ortho, surg, radiology, etc. However, I do want to do something competitive and want the best chances of doing that. I know it is hard to match competitive specialties even if you are MD but idk.

My main issue right now is that I didn't do much during my gap year. I was a CRC for about 4 months but got laid off. A family member then got diagnosed with cancer and I haven't had many updates in my life. I could try to apply again this year but am not sure how it would go because I don't have many updates. Realistically, I could try to apply, but most likely would have to take 2 gap years. I would have to get a job to get some more hours, and also retake the MCAT as it would expire.

Overall, I know DOs match into competitive specialties. I know the stigma is not as much. But I also know that stigma still exists. Some residencies refuse to even interview DOs. I would rather make my life easier. I know I could start the path to become a doctor now, but I would rather wait another 1-2 years if I would be in a better spot. Any advice from someone who has had to deal w a similar thing would be really helpful. Thank you

What is the most insane thing you’ve done to get off a waitlist?

Please actually I would give them an organ if they wanted.

Alr sent a letter of intent and an update letter. Thinking about sending a letter of continued interest each week idk help

NSU KPCOM vs DMUCOM

Hi so as the title states I’m currently deciding btwn NSU KPCOM and DMUCOM and feeling torn. The idea of living in Iowa is not my favorite thing in the world but I truly am willing to go to the school that is the best and sacrifice a little bit in the long run.

I know people on here love to hate on NSU, but personally I thought the match was quite good this year. However I would love honest opinions no matter what they are or if a student that goes there now could answer any of my questions! I would love to keep my doors open to a competitive speciality so whichever school gives me the best chance of that is the one I will probably end up going to.
