Parking Meter Penalty Hike

Not sure if many are aware but Mayor Patterson wants to DOUBLE the fines for meter violations (from $15 to $30). The usual dipshits on council and the illustrious Andy Stone tacitly agree. What do you think?

Co-op hierarchies

So it’s no secret that hierarchies can form in a co-op, even if everyone is ostensibly equal. But has anyone else noticed it’s usually the ones who come in bemoaning traditional management structures as their main reason for wanting to work at a co-op that end up trying to consolidate the most power?

For context, I’ve been at the same restaurant co-op for many years. It’s structured in such a way that not all workers are owners but everyone basically can be if they choose. Also, non-members have lots of opportunities to participate in governance and management (for lack of a better word) activities. Unfortunately, with any democratic system, some people gain a higher level of prestige just by being louder. And, if they aren’t checked, can end up getting pretty bossy to boot. In my years of experience, many of these have been people who quit or were fired from a previous job over clashes with management and came to the co-op so that no one would be “over them”. And, wiz bam in a couple years they are trying to run the show. They don’t so much dislike traditional hierarchies; they just wanna be at the top.

Am I just a curmudgeon who is wary type A people and lead guitarists or has anyone else experienced this?

Athens “Bike Lanes”

I don’t ride for transportation as much as I used to but it still kills me how the city went on a bender making “bike lanes” like ten years ago to make Athens seem more bike friendly and never followed up really. Here’s the thing: painting a little cyclist icon on the shoulder of a road is not creating a bike lane, especially when you simultaneously narrow the other lanes. The bike lanes on Columbus road, E State, and Richland Ave are whack. They are often full of debris and are far too narrow to give motorists a wide berth. You’re better off on the sidewalk, which, of course, passes the hazard off to pedestrians.

I wonder if the city will ever actually invest in making our streets safer for cyclists?

*Before you come at me with “but the bike path”: We all know the bike path is largely for recreation. It’s great for getting from Nelsonville to Athens if you don’t have a car but if you’re biking to work the bike path offers little, unless you work somewhere right next to it.*

Is this a big slider? [SE Ohio]

I’ve never seen any turtle (besides snappers) this large where I live. It was a delight to get them out of the road. Not sure on the ID tho.
