Stuff that needs homes!

Hey guys! I hope this is allowed and you are well!

I have decided that I am going to start my life fresh and purge my apartment. I am wanting to part with a bunch of stuff that deserve to be loved and seen in a collectors household.

Here is what I have:

A collection of cat stuff. This includes books, pictures, posters, cups and other things. This collection has always been important to me, so I would love to find find someone who LOVES cats and collects!

I know we live in Ohio, but I am originally from Iowa. I have a bunch of Iowa Hawkeye random that needs a home. So if you know an Iowa fan, here yard go.

Last but not least a bat mirror.

I hope this works! I'd rather it go to someone than a greedy thrift store! Message me! Xoxo

Edit: NINTENDO HAS A HOME!

Rant/Boycotting

I’m not going to get into any specific political debate/talk for the sake of simplicity.

As someone who has lived in Athens for a very long time and has grown accustomed to the community I don’t seem to be able to grasp why we don’t boycott businesses that aren’t treating us well more often (not just Athens, but the US as a whole).
As time keeps going we continuously see worse and worse treatment from the companies that own our ways of life. Whether that’s increasing prices, lower quality items, or lack of jobs to be able to sustain our lives, they are all lacking in value and we can clearly see why. It’s corporations/government pursuing profit over the people. They strive for the most money they can make off of our backs. So again, why don’t we do something about it? I can’t be the only one willing to work, sick of being poor but can’t get a job because they are so limited while prices for everything keep going up. I know everyone is exhausted because it’s the one true thing most of us have in common: we are struggling.

I greatly believe that individualism is going to be the death of us, which is produced/perpetuated by corporatism and backed by the government and their corrupt policies. The notion that every responsibility is solely on the individual disregards nuance and the actual reasons why people struggling can’t just “pick themselves up by the bootstraps.” I believe that this is a huge reason why we don’t boycott as much as we should because the question remains: if we boycott these stores, food services, etc. how will we eat or be able to survive the boycott? Due to individualism we don’t have strong communities, not really at least. A community is supposed to band together, provide resources for all, distribute those with excess to those who don’t. Together we could make things happen but instead we are paralyzed with fear and anxiety about how we are going to make it to the next day. And by no means am I saying this is our fault, it’s unfortunately the result of the system that surrounds us. The idea that YOU have to figure out how to succeed in a failing economy, YOU have to get a job is a limited market, YOU have to manage your time well (even though most people are already over worked), YOU have to figure everything out, is yes, daunting, but more importantly it isn’t based in reality. This sentiment ignores the fact that most people ARE actually trying but are getting nowhere because of the system surrounding us and how no matter which direction we go in we are set back because prices are so high, savings are basically nonexistent, and we aren’t even getting paid livable wages to be able to propel us forward and do the “right thing” by climbing the economic ladder.

If we boycott businesses together, stop working for them, stop buying from them, and all around end being reliant by not funding their corruption then we can get somewhere but it’s hard when everything that we need to live is built on making money to survive. If survival is our only means of moving forward then we aren’t as advanced as we say we are.

I also understand the issue of boycotting work because then we won’t be able to pay rent/bills and honestly I don’t have an answer for that, I’m just one person, but I’m asking the community to come together to try to figure something out. We all want something better for at least ourselves, so I’m asking that you consider wanting better lives for others as well. This also requires a community to work together instead of seeing each other as competitors for survival.

I’m not sure what the next step would be but I want to listen, to learn, and to do something about it because I can’t afford not to. Thank you for reading if you made it this far and I hope you have a good day!

pest control options: termites

My house may have termites. I am looking for recommendations for a local pest control business you have had positive experiences with. I would like to avoid using Terminix; I had multiple problems with them, and their communication was poor (not to mention the difficulty I had cancelling service with them was infuriatingly scummy).

Star Chamber Summer Pinball Tournament Schedule

We've got a summer full of pinball tournaments scheduled at Star Chamber, and our first tournament takes place tonight. We'll be using this summer to try out several new formats as well, and to vary what night of the week we meet to accomodate different schedules.

Each tournament starts at 6:30 (registration opens at 6:00). Instead of the normal half-hourly rate for the arcade, tournament particiants pay a $10 venue fee which covers the time from 6:00 pm until the end of the tournament. Additionally participants pay a $10 tournament entry fee, all of which goes to the prize pool to award cash prizes to the top 3 players. Please bring cash for the tournament entry fee (state laws regarding tournaments vs gambling are very specific)

The tournaments will have different formats, but in general we play in small groups on a machine for each round, with your head to head performance affecting your standings overall in the tournament. Groups and games change with each round. Some formats you earn strikes and are eliminated after 3 strikes, some formats have us earn points in each round to add to a running total. During Brew week we're even going to try out a Split Flipper tournament where teams of 2 will play at the same time (one player on each flipper), leaving each player with a hand free to hold their brew.

The $10 tournament entry fee gets added to the prize pool, which will be split 60%/30%/10% among first second and third place. So far we've only had one repeat winner, and several winners have been playing in their first tournament.

Competitive pinball is pretty new to Athens, so most of the people showing up are new to the hobby and all experience levels are welcome. Pinball has been a really fun hobby for me, and I'm excited to be playing again and building a community of Pinheads around tournaments and leagues here in Athens.

We have a tournament tonight at 6:30. It will be a timed-matchplay tournament. That means we'll play in groups of 4 on a machine, and earn points each round based on how we finish. First place gets 7 points, then 5 for second, 3 and 1. Points are totaled across the rounds. Instead of having a set number of rounds, this is a time-capped tournament. Our final round must start before 8:30, and the standings at the end of that round are the final standings for the turnament (excepting tie breakers for top 3).

I'm happy to answer any and all questins about pinball and the tournaments.

P.S. If you remember playing Addams Family at the Union back in the day, they have one at Star Chamber now

Ferns and Deer, Athens Ohio deer salad buffet preferences

Hi Athens,

I posted a long list of plants and deer a few years back, a search should find it. I did not (I don't think) focus on ferns.

Anyhow, here is a report and a question.

My Question.

Polystichum Setiferum

This one has lots of common names, curious if anyone has tried it and if the deer ate it or not.

Ferns that deer do not eat.

Japanese Painted Ferns, Athyrium Nipponicum.

Nice fern, spreads slowly by spores.

Dryopteris Filix-mas, Male Fern

It is strange, they will sometimes eat a fresh one from the nursery, but once it gets settled in it seems fine. So maybe it is a variety thing. So not 100 percent, but close enough. Other Dryopteris have been eaten, it is a huge family though.

Eastern Bracken Fern

Aggressive, if it wasn't native it would be classified as invasive, that said, deer do not eat it.

Ferns that deer do eat.

Ostrich Fern Matteuccia struthiopteris

The deer do not always eat this to the ground, but they do sometimes.

Cinnamon Fern Osmundastrum cinnamomeum

I might sometimes confuse Ostrich with cinnamon, but the deer will eat both.

Glade Fern, Homalosorus pycnocarpos

This one has recently been reclassified, but I think I have it right, The glade fern that is native to Athens county.

Interrupted Fern

Deer eat this

Surplus Sea salt, dried beans, rice, and wheat berries

Neighbor and good friend died. I volunteered to clean up his house prior to demolition. In his younger days he was a prepper. I am wondering how to donate 300+ lbs of sea salt, and 12+ 5 gallons buckets of dried beans, rice and wheat berries. The food was well sealed, but at least 20 years old. So you creative Athenians...what to do with these surpluses?

ISO Classic Car

We are looking for a classic car to borrow/rent for our engagement photos. We want a 1970’s car or truck. We would not need to drive it, and the owner could stay there for the photos if they would like. It would only be for an hour or two. If you know of any leads, please pass them along!

Long read

On June 6, 2024, my friends and I rented a boat at Strouds Run State Park. It was a busy summer day with friends and families enjoying the park and lake. We spent time swimming and boating without incident until we were heading back to the dock to return the boat.

While heading back, we noticed a man on land with his pants down and his genitalia exposed. He was masturbating while facing our boat. We were shocked and extremely uncomfortable. We immediately contacted law enforcement.

Because we were still out on the water and the individual was on foot, he was able to leave the area before officers arrived. By the time we returned to the boating office, he had already fled in a vehicle. I believe a park employee was able to photograph or record the vehicle’s license plate as he was leaving.

We remained at the marina and provided statements to responding officers. One officer mentioned that there were individuals known in the area for similar behavior, though no additional details were provided at the time.

The following month, charges related to the incident were filed against Oren R. Apple. I later learned that he is a registered sex offender with a prior attempted rape conviction connected to Ohio University in 2001, for which he served prison time. Public records also show multiple public indecency and trespassing charges involving Ohio University property, where he is reportedly banned from campus.

Despite this history, he served only 30 days in jail related to our incident and, to my knowledge, still has unpaid court fees associated with the case. Apple’s most recent charge was on May 14, when he was reportedly found near Copeland Hall on Ohio University property despite the alleged ban. From my understanding, that case was later dismissed and he was released the same day, which has only added to concerns within the community regarding enforcement and accountability.

Recently, this same individual has appeared at my workplace, which has caused renewed concern and discomfort. My employer is currently in the process of formally trespassing him from the property.

Most of my concern stems from the fact that, if he is banned from Ohio University property, he still appears to remain closely associated with the Athens area. He has reportedly been connected to locations such as The Gathering Place and Mike’s Bridge House, yet I do not understand how residency requirements apply in those circumstances. Although eSORN has listed him as homeless in the past, I remain concerned about how his address and whereabouts are monitored and verified. That the address listed on the eSORN currently may not be current or accurate which states he lives in Patriot (an hour away), though I cannot independently confirm that information. Personally seeing him at my work place multiple times makes me think otherwise.

Additionally, a separate concerned citizen wrote a letter to the editor of the Athens Independent regarding the temporary housing huts approved by Athens City Council in October 2025 for use by The Gathering Place. In that letter, the writer referenced Apple’s previously listed address on North Congress Street associated with The Gathering Place. The location is approximately one block from the middle school and near the busy Court Street area when Ohio University students are in town.

From my own research and conversations around town, I also understand there were concerns raised by young women attending Ohio University who were renting a house next to The Gathering Place and the proposed huts. Concerns were reportedly expressed about personal safety and the proximity of the housing initiative to student residences. From what I have heard, some of those concerns were dismissed, and comments were allegedly made suggesting that if property owners did not support the initiative, they “should not rent to young women anymore.” I cannot independently verify every statement that was made during those discussions, but the concerns themselves appear to have been real and widely discussed within the community.

Public trust has also been affected by recent corruption allegations involving former Athens County Job and Family Services director Jean Demosky, who has been publicly accused of misconduct involving misuse of public funds and improper allocation of benefits and services. Situations like this contribute to broader community concerns about oversight, accountability, and whether public systems intended to protect and support residents are being managed appropriately. While I cannot speak to any specific connection between those allegations and Oren Apple, the combination of these issues has understandably caused many people in the community to question whether adequate safeguards and transparency are in place.

I also believe many residents feel conflicted because they want to support programs that help vulnerable people in the community while still expecting reasonable safeguards and accountability measures to be in place. Wanting compassion and wanting safety are not mutually exclusive concerns. Community members should be able to voice questions about supervision, monitoring, and proximity to schools or student housing without immediately being dismissed or made to feel unreasonable for asking.

I understand that homelessness, addiction recovery, and public safety are all complicated issues that require compassion and thoughtful solutions. And I want to see these solutions work effectively. However, I also believe community members, students, workers, and families deserve to have their safety concerns taken seriously—especially when they involve individuals with documented histories of sexual offenses and repeated public indecency. My intention in sharing this experience is not to create fear, but to express why many people in the Athens community continue to feel concerned and why transparency, accountability , and proper monitoring matter.

Job Offer, Potential Move Back to Ohio

Hello everyone!

I’m just a college student but my parents are thinking of moving to Athens, OH! Our family originally lived in Cleveland, OH for quite a long time (almost 20 years) but ended up moving to Augusta, GA after a job offer. Now we might be moving back to Ohio.

I was excited at first, but I noticed the city is very small compared to what we are used to. It seems everything nice is in Columbus which is still an hour drive. The job offer is nice, but I’m not sure about living in such a small, reclusive town. To add on, we are an Asian and liberal family so I’m worried about the community as well.

Can anyone tell me anything about the city? What is it like living there? What is the view on people of color? What is the school system like? Hospitals? Grocery stores? Anything would help, thanks everyone!

Baby Geese Cuteness available for your viewing pleasure

They just mowed both sides of the hocking, so the grass is low. On the south side between White's Mill and Richland Ave the Canada Geese have carved up their turf and are taking the babies out for some grass grazing.

It is ridiculously cute. Go see em before the coyotes do !!

The north side had a flock of motherless geese. I don't know Geese politics, so I won't predict why the families are on the south and the childless are on the north. Probably safety, no bike path on that side???

Gluten-Free restaurants?

Former OU alum now living in Columbus. My girlfriend has heard so much about Athens that we decided to do a weekend trip down there so she can see why it’s so special to me.

Thinking about a nice dinner Saturday, but she’s on a gluten-free and dairy-free diet. Those restrictions are never something I had to consider during my time in Athens, and off memory I can’t think of places that would be a good fit.

Where might be a good spot for dinner that suits her needs? Hoping to stay uptown. The general vibe I’m going for is Cento (if that’s still around!) nice and romantic but close to uptown.

Donkey points

I won’t be able to get to Athens before the Donkey cards can’t be used anymore, and I have $16 on mine. I don’t know if you can still just give them the number, but my number is 735064 for anyone who wants to try.
