Cattle Guards, in Response to Episode 110

In Lone Pine, Ca, the town I grew up in, they have cattle guards that run across the highway because the ranch owns land on either side of of the highway and move the cows from one field to another.

When I was a kid they were the standard yellow metal bars with a gap below them. At some point in the 2010’s they were all paved over and replaced with yellow painted bars, like the dividing lines on the road, but they where taller so there was an actual elevation difference between the road and the bars. It made it much easier on your car to drive over them and my assumption has always been that enough generations of cows have seen the yellow bars that they just know to avoid them. This is purely speculation on my part. There are some back roads that still have the full on metal cattle guards but all of the ones on the highway have been replaced with the painted ones.

I just thought Gavin would like to know that this is a thing that exists that’s not as harmful to the animals but still acts as a deterrent.
