Adult Black Dragon Sorcerer?
I feel like I ask too many very technical questions but here's another...I would like to make Voaraghamanthar a sorcerer. Here's how I am modifying an adult black dragon stat block:
Level 3 sorcerer, DC16 an +8 to hit. Spells:
- Cantrips: Create Bonfire, Friends, Mind Sliver, Mage Hand
- 1st Level (4 slots): feather fall, expedition retreat, absorb elements, shield
- 2nd Level (2 slots): misty step, hold person
Add legendary action (2 action cost) to cast a spell.
Here's my logic:
- He is supposed to be a very paranoid dragon so I gave him lots of defensive spells ("What if I get knocked out of the sky? What if another dragon attacks me? What if I'm fighting a powerful mage?", etc.)
- Dragon multiattack/breath weapon is so good that they would never waste a regular action on spellcasting, so all spells are bonus actions, reactions, or legendary actions.
Here is my concern: Does this increase CR by a bit (14 -> 16 is my goal) or by a HUGE amount (18 would be too much)? Two major concerns:
- Hold Person LA + a multiattack action can probably kill about any player, and he can do that twice in a fight.
- With shield, his AC could basically become 24 for 4 rounds
Any thoughts on if this is too strong, and how you would modify it?
Bullywug Mud Throwing OP?
So I have had my players encounter bullywugs taunting them by throwing mud, and next session they are going to fight them. I thought it would be a cool way to bring that back around if I gave the bullywugs an extra ability, something like this:
Mud Fling (recharge 6): action. Target makes a DC11 dex save or is blinded until end of the bullywugs next turn.
The problem is I don't really want it to affect their challenge rating. I was considering limiting it to like two bullywugs out of the group they will fight.
Thoughts?
EDIT: I think I have been convinced that it is not that powerful, so I'm going to give it to ALL the bullywugs (12 of them) but just make them start with it "discharged" so on average 2 of them will get it each round. I think it's fun and flavorful, but it also gives me a renewable resource that I can use MORE if it's not being very effective, or use less if it's too effective and kind of actively balance the combat.
I remain concerned about Lera Abova
For a while Gal Gadot got a lot of attention for playing "Model roles", i.e. roles where all she had to do was be beautiful, make deep, piercing eye contact, and delivery sultry or deadpan lines. But once she had to actually diversity her roles a little, it became really obvious how bad of an actor she is.
I'm not saying Lera Abova will turn out that way, but I just haven't seen enough to be convinced one way or another:
Evidence against her:
- Early career as a model
- Limited filmography compared to most of the cast
- Early Robin scenes are deadpan enough to mask a limited acting range
Evidence for her:
- Her performance does have SOME variations in speed and delivery that Gal Gadot's performances do not have. These may be signs only of good directing or of acting "ticks" that she just always does in every circumstance, but they could also be signs of acting range.
Anyway those are my thoughts. I didn't have any concerns on first watch, but on rewatch after the glamor wears off these are the things I start to notice.
Abandon Hope
In the Serpent's Pass I always found it a little cheesy that the baby was named Hope at the end of it, until I started thinking about it in the context of the other things they say about "hope" in the course of the episode:
- "Abandon hope"
- "Hope is a distraction"
- "Hope's not going to get us to Ba Sing Se or help us find Appa"
- "Sometimes it hurts more to hope."
So naming the baby hope is really the synthesis of the message the episode is trying to send: Hope IS a baby. It's true it won't really do anything practical for you, and it can sometimes hurt, and be hard to take care of, and distract you from other things. But you would never abandon it, because it's the reason that you have to go on.
Creating Pharblex Loot for Druid PC
Hey all, so because I have been running a few side quests in my campaign, my wizard PC has ended up getting a lot of spell scroll loot while my druid PC hasn't gotten very much. Because of that I was thinking about changing out Pharblex's spell books for something better suited to a druid. I am looking to see if anyone has any ideas either official magic items or Homebrew. A few things to note:
- running ToD reloaded, so players are level 7.
- I want the item(s) to be balanced but powerful.
- for a totally unrelated reason my druid really likes shifting into a frog
One homebrew idea I had was an Amulet of the Frog Spirit. It would allow 1 free wild shape per day into a frog or giant frog, enable storing of up to two spell slots (but turn the effects green or froggy), allow free communication will frog like creatures, and also be possessed by a sentient but surly frog spirit.
