According to his account, a business needed a dedicated transformer to ensure adequate power supply. The transformer itself allegedly cost ₹6 lakh, but under the previous regime, the expected bribe was ₹24 lakh.
Business owner: "Maybe I'll just install solar panels instead."
Fast forward, the same business is reportedly contacted again regarding its transformer application. When asked about the cost, the answer was simply:
₹6 lakh.
"What about the other charges?"
"What other charges?"
Suddenly we're discovering that electricity infrastructure doesn't naturally require a 400% corruption surcharge.
DMK supporters spent years explaining why nothing could be done, why delays were normal, why businesses should be patient, and why paying extra was somehow part of the ecosystem.
Turns out the transformer wasn't expensive.
The corruption was.
Imagine being so efficient at rent-seeking that you make solar power look like the cheaper bureaucratic option.
If this account is accurate, then businesses weren't avoiding investments because infrastructure was costly. They were avoiding investments because corruption made them costly.
₹6 lakh for the transformer. ₹24 lakh for the privilege of getting one. Peak Dravidian innovation.

So let me get this straight.
The law requires councillors, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, to declare their assets and liabilities within 90 days and update them annually.
Out of 200 councillors, only 43 complied.
That means 157 councillors didn't bother, including Mayor R Priya and Deputy Mayor M Mahesh Kumar. According to the RTI findings reported by The New Sunday Express, they themselves had not submitted the disclosures.
But somehow there is always enough time and energy for protocol politics and public-event drama.
Just days ago, a controversy erupted when TVK MLA M.R. Pallavi walked out of a GCC event after alleging that Mayor Priya deliberately did not hand her the ceremonial candle for the lamp-lighting ceremony, which was viewed as a protocol slight.
Asset declarations? Missing.
Transparency? Missing.
Accountability? Missing.
But protocol ego battles? Fully operational.
The funniest part is the reported explanation: apparently some people claim they were unaware of the requirement or didn't receive the forms. Imagine being elected to govern a city of millions but needing a reminder form to comply with a statutory disclosure requirement.
At this rate, the only assets being transparently displayed are political egos.
Maybe before deciding who gets the candle at public functions, they could start by declaring what they own. That would be a much more useful public service. 🔥
