Canadian emigrated abroad issues
So client emigrated in 2025, it's now July. He needs to pay departure tax on his personal assets and he owns a (formerly) CCPC corp. Corp is only investments, about 400k worth, so as he's sole owner, he needs to value the corp and put it on the return as a deemed disposition capital gain. He could do an election where he defers the tax until sold (T1244), that'd be the HELPFUL solution (even with needing collateral/security), but the election expires by April 30th and unlike other elections, this one isn't "daddy minister can bail you out if you're nice about it". Just statute expired.
Owes 100k plus in taxes. Don't even know about the penalties here. Sole comfort is he gave the file in June and didn't tell me the emigration so I didn't personally screw him. FML. Not going to enjoy a call but at this point I have to throw in the towel and find a more specialized referral since I can't be confident here there isn't some way out for him and it'd be disrespectful to not have someone experienced try.
Grossed my players out with porn adjacent misunderstanding.
Just found this embarrassing in one of the games I ran, wanted to vent. The campaign is off the Twisted Taverns book, and they're going from high fantasy tavern to tavern, collecting the items this drunk archwizard left at the various bars. Since they teleport between taverns, the tavern they transported to was an aquatic one. So... they immeadiately start drowning in an underwater bar.
In my head, the thought was the octopus barkeep, seeing landlubber adventurers drown in his bar, not for the first time, begrudgingly grabs rebreathers off the wall and tries to stick them on the adventurers faces.
My adventurers, confused/disoriented and rolled low on perception, only noticed a tentacle trying to shove something into their mouth. They attempt to escape. They roll high, succeed. They're still drowning. Bartender chases after them. Doesn't want them to hurt themselves so would try to restrain... at that point I was realizing. No one speaks octopus because why the hell would that be a thing? (The octupus bartender was FROM THE BOOK, I didn't choose that character, it was just there)
There was this moment of the game kind of stopping, like no one made moves and looked at me, while my brain knew "oh" from the looks, I didn't know how to resolve it. I just said "I think there might be a... thought about this situation. Trust me, it's not that thought. Play it through?"
TLDR Most of my friends thought I was fanfic'ing tentacle porn.
So... escape to the internet anyone?
Like... youre not trapped forever and just have to accept being in the circus. Wait for another wifi signal. Start communicating with the wider world. I get the message was "be okay with your life and be there for one another" but you have a way to not do that and its just available as an option. Like the black mirror episode about star trek where they all go into a MMORPG.
I've been ruined by DCC
I read 8 books of he who fights with monsters. I was enjoying myself. I was halfway through the 9th when the newest DCC dropped. I finished it. Now I am no longer enjoying HWFWM. I blame Matt Dinniman specifically. That rat bastard gave me caviar and now I'm stuck with regular people food.
Can anyone explain why Enable Benefits is still around?
I was telling a coworker about scams and the NBA came to mind and sparked this post. I heard of the "National Benefit Authority" from a tax client a while back and they basically charge 30% of your benefit for applying for the Disability Tax Credit. It's predatory as hell and I see this: https://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2021/2021-04-14/html/sor-dors55-eng.html
Cool. Government caps the help at $100 a filing so it's not predatory. The NBA's website is there but basically scrubbed. Fine, scammer shut down all is well. Except no. Enable Benefits is the successor company, still doing the same thing, and it's 2026, 5 years after the law came into effect.
https://enable-benefits.ca/faq/
- What are the fees for Enable Benefits’ services, and how do they work?
- No upfront costs, no risk—that’s the Enable Guarantee! You only pay after you receive your refund. Once the Canada Revenue Agency deposits your money, we simply invoice 33% of your refund plus tax. If you don’t get paid, neither do we. It’s that simple!
So what the heck? I call and the phone line works, at least to the operator prompts. Is this just where they're in some 3rd world country outside of Canadian ability to shut these guys down?
I also went digging and found this as a "fun" read from 2011: https://www.ourcommons.ca/DocumentViewer/en/41-1/fina/meeting-120/evidence
I've about 3 years of full experience and about 10 years before that of dabbling with friends and family for taxes. All of it is T1s and some T2s. T3s are a spooky mystery box and I dread anyone I do taxes for dying with any estate. Is there any advice or resources on advanced courses, if I wanted to learn more about trusts and estates?
