For interpers, what is something you wish you learned as a beginner?

This goes for anything! Performance wise, etiquette, etc.

Also by interp, I mean POI, HI, DI, DUO, Prose, poetry, and storytelling

Pain after taking them out?

Hey all! I’ll keep this short and sweet. Also sorry in advance for any misspellings I’m typing this with one eye squinted lol.

So I’ve been wearing contacts for around the last three years and this has never happened to me before. But I cane back from the optometrist yesterday, and the new contavts she had me wear, the one om the left felt funky, but decided it was fine. Tonight when I was going to take them out, they felt almost syuck to my eyes and when I took them out I got the worst sharp stabbing pain. My eyes are currently watering and I cannot open my left one.

Did I scratch it or something? Help. Would eye drops belp?

What can I do myself to improve my vocal technique and remove tension as a beginner singer?

Hey all! Thanks for taking the time to listen to my bad singing lol ;)
But for context, I’m 16 and I’ve been trying to learn how to sing by myself since I was around 8.

I would love to hear what sounds good that I should work less on, and what sounds god awful that I need to work on asap lol. I’m pretty aware I’m a bad singer, people are not afraid to tell that to my face, so be as harsh as you want!

No matter how hard I try, I can’t improve, I’m starting to feel like I want to quit

TLDR: I’ve always wanted to be a good singer, and I try really hard, but I still can’t improve and I have terrible range. What can I do to improve as a last ditch effort before I give up and quit?

I practice breathing exercises and vocal placement almost daily, and I am still the worst sounding person in my choir. I want to be a good singer so badly. I hate to admit it, but when I hear someone my age or younger than me who is a good singer, 1/3 times it triggers a panic attack because I know I’ll never be as good as them no matter how hard I try.

I don’t have good range, my talking voice itself sounds ugly. I’ve just about accepted that I have no talent. My choir teacher has made me hate singing, and I feel like I want to quit. I’m still in the lowest choir after putting in 10x the effort of those in the highest choirs because I am biologically bad. All of my friends don’t try at all and are just born great singers, and are all ranked higher than me. It hurts, and it’s discouraging.

I hear people talking about my choir around the school, saying that we’re “such a skid mark on our choir department” or “I can’t believe Mrs. Blank lets them go out and perform.”

I’m willing to try anything to get better as a last ditch effort before I quit. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d really like to hear them.

My body is not its own,
I’m surrounded by friends yet I still feel alone.
Am I just a vessel to thee who awaits my pain?
My savior, my capturer, my shadow to the rain?
You lock me in my bed longer than a fortnight.
Part of me yearns to turn off the light.
Vultures that swarm to the allure of decay,
To the ravens that caw to the melody of a new day.
A day not deserved and full of grey,
But it makes one think for just a second.
What is life without the rain.

Are we gonna get to bed at a good time and get 8 hours of sleep… YES WE ARE

Are we gonna eat a carbohydrate and protein rich breakfast to provide our brain cells ATP to get through the exam… YES WE ARE

Are we gonna buy test leaks or cheat… NO WE ARE NOT

Are we gonna get this over with… YES. WE. ARE.

As someone who has had experience with different types of interp my rankings would have to go..

(From hardest to easiest) I would love to hear others thoughts though!

  1. Duo

  2. Poi

  3. HI

  4. DI

Reasonings if interested!

Duo, I’ve competed in duo, and have watched lots of final round videos. Not only do you have to cooperate with a partner, but it’s also pretty hard finding a good two person script. Tech can be tricky, you can’t touch or look at each other. It also takes a lot of trust in one another.

Poi, I competed solely in poi this year, and honestly fell in love with the event, but it’s also really hard lol. You have to have the distinct characters of an HI whilst having the acting skills of a DI. As well as that, you also have to put together a script instead of just cutting one. You have to find good poems, prose, articles, etc.

HI, this is a pretty complex event, but not as complex as the ones above. It’s hard finding a solid script that will land with the judges. It’s pretty easy to learn, popping and other skills, but hard to master.

DI, this isn’t to say DI isn’t hard, it is, it just doesn’t have as many logistics as the other interp events in my opinion.
