As a beginner, what would folks consider a reasonable hourly rate?

I'm currently trying to work out how to price stuff if I sell it. For reference, I live in the UK, where minimum wage is just under £13. That's barely a living wage (I'll avoid the political commentary) but I'm a hobbyist and a newbie at that! I don't want to overcharge, I really want what I make to be as affordable as possible, and I'm also still a relatively slow worker. Might charging materials plus a percentage be the better way to go than charging by the hour? You can check my profile for my quality of work. Hopefully this isn't too vague a question, appreciate any feedback!

ETA: it's because I've been asked to do some commissions that I'm asking

6 months in, project number 10 🥳

I didn't think 6 months ago that my curiosity would become such a passion, but here we are! Entering the hobby got me through one of the hardest periods of my life, and is now giving me a satisfaction in creating that I haven't felt in decades. I really love being able to make stuff people can use, and have gotten so much joy from gifting my projects to friends and family. Having only been a 2d artist all my life I didn't have much faith in my ability to make 3d objects, let alone sew, given how much I hated fabric sewing projects at school! But it turns out I just had to find the right medium. Thank you everyone in the leatherworking and leathercraft communities for the help and encouragement (even if I did upset some people not knowing the difference between leather paint and edge paint on this project, and didn't even know that edge dying is a thing😅).

This bag is Walpier Buttero in medium brown. The hardware is steel. I used a Tony See pattern chosen by the friend I made this for. I'll be interested to see how long my painted edges last 😂 please don't come for me I'm sensitive 😂

Edge paint longevity

Hi all,

I'm working on my first fancy bag made with Walpier Buttero. This is also my first time bevelling and painting edges and I've read that edge paint doesn't last very long. I've painted every edge with Angelus flat black leather paint, then burnished with tokonole. I'm wondering, is it worth using an Angelus finisher on the edges, will it make the black stay longer? Or has anyone got any other tips for longevity?

Thanks so much!

MY JELLOOLY BURST D':

High temperature plus high stress made my gummy blob burst and I'm so mad about how STICKY the internal goop is

From a pattern by Tony See

A friend asked if I could make them an every day satchel, so I sent them a few patterns to see what they liked and they picked out the Tony See Messenger bag. This is the first time I've had a premade pattern with a video tutorial to work from and it felt so quick and painless compared to my usual wing and a prayer approach! It was interesting to see how much can be done with rivets (or in my case, Chicago screws) as I've gone all out with the stitching in my projects up to now. I can see the appeal on the time saving front!

This is a practise one in some chrome tan I got cheaply to learn with. My friend has requested Walpier Buttero for the finished product. That will be the most expensive leather I've worked with so far and I didn't want to drop myself in the (expensive) deep end without a run through first! I quite like the natural markings on this cheaper stuff but I know that look isn't for everyone. Hardware is all quite cheap, I'll be investing in solid brass for the final make.

Crits and suggestions welcome 😊
