State Bank of India

I went to SBI today, to convert my Savings account to Salary account. Branch manager was helping me out with the process.

He asked his coworker to send a printout of 'Savings to Salary Account' conversion form to this cabin printer. We both waited for 20 mins, while he was doing other work.

He was talking in Telugu with his coworker and taking updates on the printout. I didn't understand the context.

Finally, I had to step in. I googled for the form and the first SBI portal link opened the form in PDF format.

I showed it to the Manager and he said, yes this is the form and laughed. I asked why don't you google too and print the form for me.

He said, that's the beauty of SBI 😂. We can't google and open links. Thus, he asked me to mail the form to his branch mail address and he printed the form for me.

\----

2nd part - I asked if I can apply for a lifetime free credit card from his bank. He said that option is not available.

He rather suggested that credit card officials must be coming to my office to offer cards, right. I said no.

He said, that's another beauty of SBI 😂. Private bank officials go, but SBI may not.

Thanks for the read.

Coinbase India: High Fees, No Crypto Withdrawals, and Asset Recovery Issues

I wanted to share my experience so other Indian users can make an informed decision before using r/Coinbase, after this platform recently launched in India.

I recently sold ETH worth ₹32,764.10 on Coinbase and was charged:

  • Coinbase fee: ₹488.19
  • GST: ₹147.45
  • TDS: ₹317.98

Google photos link

That's nearly ₹1,000 (3%) deducted on a transaction of about ₹32.7k, with the TDS needing to be claimed later through ITR.

The bigger issue, however, is Asset Recovery.

I mistakenly transferred an unsupported asset (BBTC) to a Coinbase-controlled address. The mistake was mine, and I fully accept that.

However, Coinbase's Asset Recovery tool is able to identify the asset, locate it, and calculate the recoverable amount. Despite this, I am currently not being allowed to recover it because Coinbase India accounts do not have crypto withdrawal/send functionality.

Restriction on withdrawal/send functionality shouldn't be a blocker for asset recovery, and I have the right to get back access to my asset as the rightful owner.

My case has been escalated within Coinbase and has been under review for more than two weeks, but no resolution. Coinbase has acknowledged that the asset exists and I have offered multiple solutions that I'm willing to accept, but I still do not have access to my asset and no resolution is provided till now.

Another thing that surprised me is that after linking an Indian bank account, Coinbase permanently disables crypto sending/withdrawal functionality on the account. But nowhere was I prompted about this info while I was signing up on Coinbase.

If you're considering Coinbase India, make sure you understand these limitations beforehand.

More details on my recovery case can be found here:

What's the point of paying fees and getting no support in return for 2 weeks?

Thanks.

Coinbase India users: Be careful. I made a mistake, but Coinbase’s recovery process has left me stuck with no resolution.

I’m posting this partly to seek advice and partly to make other Coinbase India users aware of a serious issue.

A few weeks ago, Coinbase launched INR support in India. Since I was already using Binance and wanted to consolidate my holdings, I decided to move my crypto from Binance to Coinbase.

Unfortunately, I made a mistake.

I transferred BTC from Binance to Coinbase using the Ethereum network because the fees were lower. Binance converted the BTC into Binance Wrapped BTC (BBTC), which is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.

Coinbase does not support BBTC.

That part is on me. I fully accept that I used the wrong network and sent an unsupported asset.

However, this is where things get frustrating.

Coinbase can see the asset

Coinbase’s Asset Recovery tool is able to:

  1. Locate the transaction
  2. Identify the BBTC deposit
  3. Display the recoverable amount
  4. Calculate the recovery fee

In other words, Coinbase knows exactly where the asset is and can identify it.

But Coinbase India users can’t send crypto

Because I linked a bank account to use INR services, Coinbase has permanently disabled “Send” functionality on my account due to their India policy.

According to Coinbase support:

  1. I can buy crypto
  2. I can sell crypto
  3. I can receive crypto
  4. I can withdraw INR

But I cannot send crypto to another wallet.

Why this creates a deadlock

The standard recovery process requires sending the recovered asset to Coinbase Wallet.

Since my account cannot send crypto, the recovery process cannot be completed.

So I am stuck in a situation where:

  1. Coinbase can find the asset
  2. Coinbase can identify the asset
  3. Coinbase can calculate recovery fees
  4. Coinbase acknowledges the recovery tool exists

Yet I have not been given any path to actually regain access to my asset.

What I have asked Coinbase

I have repeatedly asked Coinbase for any of the following:

  1. Manual recovery
  2. Crediting equivalent BTC, cbBTC, or USDC to my Coinbase account
  3. Alternative recovery methods
  4. Escalation to the Asset Recovery team
  5. Returning the asset to the originating source address

So far, I have mostly received responses explaining why my account cannot send crypto, rather than explaining how I can recover an asset that their own systems have already identified.

My concern

I understand that sending unsupported assets is a user mistake.

But if Coinbase can identify and locate the asset, there should be a reasonable recovery path.

What worries me is that this issue could affect any Coinbase India user who accidentally sends an unsupported ERC-20 token to Coinbase.

At that point, you may discover that:

  1. Coinbase can see the asset
  2. Coinbase knows it belongs to you

But recovering it may become extremely difficult due to account restrictions

Looking for advice

Has anyone here successfully recovered an unsupported token from Coinbase under similar circumstances?

Has anyone dealt with the Coinbase Asset Recovery team directly?

If anyone from Coinbase is reading this, I would appreciate a clear path forward rather than repeated explanations about Send restrictions.

I am not asking for special treatment. I am simply trying to regain access to an asset that Coinbase’s own recovery systems have already identified.

Any advice or visibility would be greatly appreciated.
