Finished the series for the first time. Some observations.

First of all, loved it! Knew nothing about it (not even sure where it aired in the UK originally) and so pleased that Netflix recommended it last month.

  1. The music throughout the show, was fantastic. The theme where Finch is on the roof in the finale was incredible and so sinister. Reminded me of the opening to John Carpenters Prince of Darkness.

  2. Every time Finch sellotaped a picture to his board, I chuckled. How did he get a professional headshot of everyone involved?

  3. I really didn't like the way they treated tusco for 95% of the series. I know they were protecting him but they talked to him like crap most of the time.

  4. I don't really get Greaves plan at the end. Why did he need to kill himself and finch? Didn't make sense to me.

  5. Why were they so inconsistent with their marksmanship? Sometimes they were crack shots and other times they couldn't hit someone 15 feet away who is walking very slowly away!

  6. Did I say I loved the show?

  7. What do I watch next? It had similar Fringe vibes to me, so anything along these lines is welcomed. Preferably available in the UK.

  8. Other than Root, the wardrobe department didn't have much to do. John wore his suit 99% of the time. Same for finch, Shaw, Fosco, Greaves, well everybody!

Do servers want higher wages?

Before I get to the point of this discussion, I am based in the UK where the system is different (minimum wage is for every job and not lower for wait staff) and tipping, although becoming more common, is nowhere near US levels. Most tip around 10% and usually if the service is good.

So my question is around all these posts where people talk about the US minimum wage for servers. And I would like the views of servers specifically.

If an employer said to you that your salary is $22 an hour (or whatever the min is), but the restaurant had a no tip policy, would you want to work there?

I think this question cuts through all the BS that surrounds the pro/ anti tipper debate, as my guess is that most servers will give a resounding, hell no.

So be honest, if you are a server, are you taking this job?

The Bellamy/ Burnley saga

Just a quick thought.

Last month, Bellamy apparently ruled out the Burnley job, talking about his love for Wales.

Now after the role falling through with him, what do you think happened?

Is there a possibility that the Welsh FA asked him to go for it, as they weren't too pleased with the WC qualifier? In other words, if he leaves, the FAW get some money and don't have to sack him with a payout?

Just seems strange the sudden change of heart by Craig.

For what it's worth, I think he is doing a great job and want him to stay.

What would be okay from the tender process?

Assuming that the BBC wants to both protect their cash cow but also want the best financial deal, what would you accept and what do you think the BBC would accept?

As an example, what if Amazon came in with the best deal financially for the BBC, as in a truckload of money. But the condition was that they were going to start shooting it in the US. Is that acceptable to you or the beeb?

And what if they wanted to try and americanize it in some way, like they tried with Miracle Day and Starz. Would you be okay with that?

How would you feel if we got a 12 episode season that was very glossy but just American feeling? So looks great, is actually great but now American. For example, like The Office reboot.

Quick questions 2: electric Dr Who

Another day, another quick set of questions.

Don't forget you are pitching your idea for the show at the tender process. We had the new Doc, companion and big bad yesterday. Today's pitch point questions are:

  1. What previous villain would you bring back for a one off (not the big bad of the season)?

  2. Would you consider doing a full blown musical episode (like Buffy/ Star Trek snw/ scrubs etc)

  3. What does your sonic screwdriver look like?

  4. You have cast a Hollywood superstar in the show as a one off appearance for a bit of publicity. Who have you got and what role are they playing?

  5. You are doing a 4 doctor special. Your new doctor is one, who are the other three?

Remember, it's all a bit of fun!

The return of quick questions

Last year I did a series of quite popular posts that featured some random Doctor Who questions, that I asked for people to give quick answers to.

So with the announcement of RTD/ BW gone and the show going out to bids, let's do another set of questions. Make your answers as short or long as you want!

So let's imagine, you get to pitch to the BBC your revival plan. They want to know the following 5 answers:

  1. Who is your doctor?

  2. Who is the companion?

  3. Who will be the series big bad?

  4. Name two previous episodes that encapsulate the feel of your first season.

  5. How many episodes do you need to tell your story?

Over to you.

Season 2 episode 11

I am on my first watch through of the show (and absolutely loving it for what it's worth).

But just finished this episode and have a question which to me doesn't make sense.

The episode wraps up nicely but there were two sub plots that made no sense, well not to me.

  1. The whole drug selling thing. Was that just to make money for his mum? And also, at the end of the episode, didn't he have the drug dealers after him? Unless I was distracted, neither plot point was addressed again.

  2. Why was he tanking his test scores? He was planning on killing himself anyway, so I just don't get this plot point.

As I said, I love the show so far but this is the first time where it's felt like there should have been some extra exposition.

And a final sidenote which I am sure will change as I get further in to it but they really do treat Fosco like shit! I hope they start being nicer soon!

Inserting clips/ songs

Hi all,

My podcast has been running for 2 months now and I have been blessed with some great guests in that time (its a music based interview show).

I have managed to get to grips with everything so far, such as the recording, editing and publishing side. However, I feel like I am missing a trick with using my guests own music, as it is just a talk track with some free unlicensed music at the end.

My question is, assuming my guest says I can use their music, how do I get a clip that I can use? Ideally, as the show is on YouTube as well as Spotify etc, I would like to be able to get a clip of one of the guests videos and insert a 30 second clip into my show.

If I have the clip, I know how to put it in. My question is whether there is an easy way to extract a 30 second clip from YouTube and should I do that, what licensing problems would I face?

Hope that makes sense!

Cheers

Episode views went crazy - how, why and how do I repeat!?

So I am about a dozen or so shows in/ published since launch.

The show is called Adam Talks To...(I am Adam btw) and I interview music guests from across the decades.

I have had a guest on every show from very famous to up and coming. I have about 4 shows yet to publish and a few other guests lined up in the coming month.

The show is on YouTube, Amazon, Spotify and SoundCloud but the majority of listens are coming via YT. All the shows are recorded via zoom with my guests.

All of my shows have ranged from 50 listens to my best show which had about 330 listens/ views.

Then last week, an interview with Wendy James of Transvision Vamp just flew. 6 days in and it's hit 2000 views on YouTube alone.

And bizarrely, it's the only interview where my guest didn't have their camera on. She did post about it but so did a lot of my other guests.

I won't post the link as it's against the rules but hopefully, you can answer the questions below anyway.

So my questions are:

  1. Why did this episode go big (relatively)?

  2. What can I do to maximise the momentum.

  3. How do I repeat this?

Thanks for reading!
