I've been in my current job for about a year, and recently my manager started giving me more and more tasks that aren't really part of my role.
At first, I didn't mind. I wanted to be helpful, and I figured taking on extra work would show that I was reliable.
The problem is that now those extra tasks have basically become my responsibility.
Yesterday my manager thanked me in a meeting for being “the person everyone can count on to handle things nobody else wants to do.”
Everyone laughed, but I honestly didn't know how to react.
I don't mind helping occasionally, but I'm starting to worry that I've accidentally created a situation where doing more work without extra pay is now expected of me.
I want to set some boundaries without coming across as difficult or unhelpful.
How would you handle this situation?
