How do you get the first wave of users on a product that needs a crowd to be useful?
I built a two-sided app (a swipe tool for finding cofounders and collaborators, you match with people or projects and build together).
The build was the easy part. The thing that nobody warned me about is the cold-start problem:
- A productivity app gives no value to user number one instantly
- A matching app gives almost on value until there's a crowd to match with
- So every new user opens it, sees it's quiet, and leaves
For anyone who's grown something two-sided, a marketplace, a community, a dating-style app, how did you break out of that first empty phase?
- Did you seed one side manually?
- Niche down hard to one city or one type of user?
- Fake/curate initial supply?
Genuinely trying my best to learn here and not pitch. Happy to share the app if it's useful context, but mostly after the tips.
