[TuesTalk💬] Do we fall for the real pen pal, or just the image we create of them?

Hey everyone, happy Tuesday! I brought a question today that is very interesting and exciting to me.

A lot of people say that when we write to a pen pal, we start to imagine them as a perfect person. They think we only love a fictional image in our heads, and not the real person behind the screen.

Do you think it really is just an illusion? Or can we build a genuinely real, deep connection using only words?
I would love to hear your thoughts and stories about this in the comments! ✨

Overcoming 3 years of anxiety to look for my lost, kind pen pal. ✨

I never thought I would ever post here, let alone about a topic like this. This coming February will mark exactly three years since I lost touch with my dear penpal. There was no blocking, no ghosting involved; simply the technical limitations of the website we were using cut our connection short. I am intentionally being a bit vague here, because even now, it is hard for me to put the exact details into words.
When I realized that this was almost certainly a misunderstanding—that technology had cut our conversation short, and we hadn't stopped writing by choice—the weight of it really burdened my mind. I knew they were waiting for my letter, a letter they never received. I desperately wanted them to know that there was absolutely nothing wrong with their letters, and that I truly loved reading them just as much as they loved mine.
However, my inhibitions wouldn't let me write even a normal search post. I was constantly overthinking, worrying about how unusual this situation was, fearing people might label me as a stalker, and thinking that nobody would care anyway. I tried multiple ways of putting myself out there online to cross paths with them, but all the while, I tried to remain invisible—I wanted them, and only them, to find me.
But this week, I managed to completely shed my anxieties and make peace with the situation. I had tried creating spaces online to process this before, but back then, I was still filled with fear and ended up deleting every second thing I wrote. By now, though, I have grown strong enough to say it out loud: yes, I am looking for my lost penpal.
While I was still anxious about this topic, I read so many stories of other penpals who lost each other due to similar technical glitches. Many just accepted it, but there are those who still want to find their friend—yet these kinds of posts easily get lost in massive forums.
Now, I can proudly say that I believe in the people who share a similar story. I believe that we need a supportive space for this. A space that doesn't belong to stalkers, but to people who respected their penpals through and through, and simply lost touch due to external reasons.
For more than two years, I was constantly stressed about how I could ever find them. On Friday, I finally found the courage to post a short snippet from the first paragraph of my very last letter—something they would almost certainly recognize. It feels so incredibly good to be free.
Now, even if no answer comes, I won't keep questioning myself. I won't ask if I’m doing the right thing, if I’m being weird, what they will think, or if they’ll find it uncomfortable... No, not anymore. I believe I have done the absolute best I could for both of us. And this could even turn into a greater, noble cause if we can help others in similar situations connect.
Wishing everyone a beautiful week ahead! I hope you all find the strength to step out of your comfort zones. It is an uplifting feeling to refuse to give in to anxiety. ✨

SAMPLE POST: FunnyUser25 looking for A. - [2014-2016] - Online Pen Pal

The weekend is still here, which is all about search posts. I can't wait for the first posts to kickstart our group's journey. Until then, I will create some sample posts myself. For now, everything is just a trial version that will require continuous adjustments depending on how our subreddit grows. This is what I came up with for the first round. I keep hoping that one day we will outgrow this subreddit and many people will find each other. ✨

App/Site/Location: PenPal World Website / Canada (Toronto) to Their Country: USA

(Note: If they live in a small town where they could easily be identified, please only describe a larger area, e.g., the state or county!)

Nicknames/Names: She: April123; Me: FunnyUser27

Ages: She: 25 & Me: 27

(Note: When you first met.)

Timeframe: Spring 2014 - Summer 2016

(Note: The more precise the date, the better.)

Frequency: We exchanged about two letters a month on average

End of Contact: I got locked out of my account and couldn't get back in

Specific Memories/Details: I will never forget when you told me that whenever you're nervous, you always hold your cat tightly against you and its purring calms you down. Since then, I've got a cat too, and whenever I'm nervous, I hold it close. And it works. And of course, my cat survives it too.

Message to Them: I am so sorry that we lost touch because of me. I always loved talking to you. I tried to log back into my account countless times, but it never worked. Sometimes you still cross my mind, so I thought I'd give this a try.

You don't have to follow this template strictly, but it's highly recommended to include these details. However, please make sure to follow the exact format for the title.

Tip: Feel free to include as many specific details as possible in your posts! It's always best to be as precise as you can. You can even mention what was written in their very last letter to you. If you were postal pen pals, you can also attach pictures in the comments—such as unique stamps, postcards, or even drawings from your old letters to help them identify you. ✨

MyDayFriday☕ — Open Letter to Douxie.

It’s Friday night. This means only one thing: it’s time for MyDayFriday. This is the one day when I don’t participate in our subreddit as a moderator, but as a regular user, trying to seize every opportunity to catch up with my pen pal after two years.

I hesitated for a long time about whether to share this picture here on the subreddit and write so openly. In the end, I was convinced by the fact that I know many people sharing the same fate would love to see a post like this. We are in this group for each other, and our examples can give hope to others.

To Douxie: I promised from the very beginning that I wouldn't dox you and would only share the absolute minimum amount of information, since I can't ask if you'd even want that. But look, this picture from the beginning of my last letter is something only the two of us truly understand—you will definitely recognize yourself from it. This is why my page was born. I trust that one day we will laugh about this, together with many others who shared a similar fate, and by doing so, we will give meaning to our story. ✨

‘CultureThurs’: Politeness vs. Suspicion: Is saying hello to strangers considered polite or creepy where you live?

With this post, I officially open our Thursday #CultureThurs thematic day! 🥳 If you have any thoughts or questions, feel free to share them with us, and let's gather our cultural differences together...

For a long time, I have been deeply fascinated by how different we all are when it comes to greeting and addressing people on the street. It’s amazing how much a person's cultural background affects online penpals who are making connections around the world. I’ve always found the unwritten rules about smiling at strangers, doing small talk, and greeting people in public to be incredibly interesting.
In places like the US, it is completely natural and polite to lock eyes with a stranger on the street, smile, or even say a casual "Hey, how's it going?" as you walk past. If you don't do it, people might think you are moody or rude.

However, in many European or Scandinavian countries, greeting a stranger for no reason or trying to chat with them at a bus stop is considered very unusual. People might think you are fake, suspicious, or want something from them. They prefer to respect each other's personal space with quiet neutrality.
This contrast is so interesting because both sides are just trying to be polite, but it can easily lead to a misunderstanding for anyone interested in finding friends** **or building an international penpal bond.

To give you a real example, here is a little story of my own:
As a Central European, greeting people always felt natural to me. Once, I was staying at a hostel, and while walking through the kitchen, I casually said hello to a man who was passing right next to me. He looked at me as if I had just committed a crime! :D He kept staring at me suspiciously for a long time, completely unable to process my friendliness. I felt so incredibly awkward because I didn't want to cross his personal boundaries at all—I was just trying to be polite!

Have you ever experienced a sharp contrast like this? How did you bridge the gap, and do you have a similar funny story?

Can we call an online friend, a pen pal, or a postal pal a "true friend" or is it just a mirage?

Dear All,

For our very first TuesTalk, I want to dissect a topic that lies at the very heart of this community. Many people in the "outside world" often tell us that online or long-distance friendships aren't real because we haven't met in person.

What do you think? Can a pen pal, a postal pal, or an online friend become a true, deep friend? Or in the end, is a long-distance connection just a beautiful, fleeting mirage? Have you ever felt that an online friend understood you better than the people physically around you?

Please share your thoughts, dilemmas, or personal stories in the comments below. Let's talk about it with respect.

Additionally, if there is any thought occupying your mind, please leave it here for us so we can look into it together with proper humility, without hurting one another.

With hope and respect,

LookingForDouxie

Do you pre-arrange or discuss with your penpal how often you will exchange letters?

Finding the right rhythm for exchanging letters can be tricky, whether you send traditional paper mail or digital messages. Do you prefer to discuss the schedule beforehand, or do you just let things flow naturally? For example, some penpals end up talking every single day! Share your thoughts below!

r/FindingOurLostPenPals is still alive — Announcement! ✅

Dear All,

I want to thank you all once again for your subscriptions. This means so much to me, especially since it all happened during a time when I couldn't be present on my own subreddit, couldn't manage it, or help make it more visible with your support.

I had to leave the page for a certain period, but the fire is still burning inside me for all those lost pen pals who became victims of a technical error or a misunderstanding. And of course, I personally still want to find my own lost pen pal, Douxie., as well. I truly feel it is never too late for that.

With renewed energy, I am happy to announce that for the sake of our success, I am upgrading our subreddit. I have divided the week into themed days, so that even those who are interested in the pen pal world but don't currently have a lost pen pal can easily join the conversation. For those who want to post about their lost pen pal, online friend, or postal pal — the entire weekend is strictly yours.

Our week looks like this:

MONDAY — MondayPolls📊: This day is exclusively for voting, and anyone can vote for a whole week. If you have a question about the topic that you want answers to, or if you are curious about others' opinions but don't want to write a long post, simply put it out here!

TUESDAY — TuesTalk💬: On this day, we will dissect more serious topics. If you have a thought-provoking or controversial subject, please leave it here for us to debate and think over together.

WEDNESDAY — WednesMemes🤣: After the serious topics, it's time to refresh with a meme flood! This day also includes any misunderstandings coming from cultural differences or language barriers that once made you smile.

THURSDAY — CultureThurs🌎: This is our culture day. Please feel free to share any cultural differences you found interesting, or ask any questions you have.

FRIDAY — FridayMyDay☕️: Anything personal that you just feel like writing out of yourself is welcome here. Whether it’s an unsent closure letter, uploading a beautiful postcard, sharing a song that reminds you of them, or starting your own AMA (Ask Me Anything) about your story—even about how you two found each other through a pen pal site, postal pal, or how you became a couple or simply close friends!

FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY — LOOKING FOR: The core of my subreddit, the very reason this space was born. Keeping the template I designed in mind, feel free to make a post, whether it’s a lost postal pal, pen pal, or online friend. I truly hope that over time, there will be pairs who find their way back to each other through us.

So grateful for our growing community! ❤️

I want to thank all of you for your support. It might seem small to you, but it means everything to me as we build this space together.

Also, a quick note: I know some of you might not prefer meme posts, and I sincerely apologize if they aren't your favorite.
