My benchmate and I have great chemistry in person, but I can't tell if she actually wants to know me better
I (M) have a crush on my benchmate and I genuinely don't know how to read this situation.
We sit together almost every day at coaching. She's funny, cool and we have a really good sense of humour together. Our jokes can get pretty extreme racist stereotypes, dark humour, stupid shit like that but it's clearly mutual and she's comfortable enough around me to joke like that.
We laugh a lot and there's definitely a good vibe between us.
The problem is that almost all of our interaction stays at that surface level.
We're connected on WhatsApp and Instagram, but we barely talk there.
I don't really initiate either because I don't know what to say beyond the same jokes we already make in class.
I've tried a few times to actually get to know her better or suggest spending some time together after coaching, but whenever I try to move the conversation in that direction, she either changes the subject or kind of cuts the conversation short.
And that's what's confusing me.
In person, she seems extremely comfortable with me. We can sit together for hours and joke around like idiots. But whenever I try to take the interaction beyond the coaching environment, it feels like she's not really interested.
I don't want to assume that because she's comfortable joking with me, she likes me romantically. She could simply see me as a friend/benchmate she's comfortable around.
At the same time, I don't want to just sit there for months doing the exact same surface-level banter and never actually get to know her. So what would you guys do here?
Should I keep things natural and gradually try to have more normal conversations with her, or should I just directly ask her to hang out after coaching once and see what happens?
I don't want to confess or make things awkward. I just want to know whether there's actually potential here or if I'm completely misreading the situation.
