Reminder - let your unit settle before first turning it on

With the recent surge in buying of portable AC units and with a lot of us being unfamiliar with them in the UK, I thought it may be helpful to remind/make people aware of the importance of letting them sit for a while before first switching them on.

I’ve added below a link that explain it better than I can the reasons why and for how long to wait (‘How long should a portable air conditioner sit before turning it on?’ via Quora has good info also but Reddit won’t let me link it).

For TLDR purposes though; compressor oil & refrigerant moves to where it shouldn’t be during transit - allow 8-24 hours depending on how roughly it was transported to allow these fluids to settle back to where they need to be to prevent damage to the internal components.

Dead tube?

Hi all, had this clock a few years - put it together Christmas 2023, used everyday since. Recently it’s not been saving the time when being plugged back in, couldn’t remember if it had a battery inside & took it apart to check.

On putting it back together the second digit would flicker when on 2 and a few other numbers. Plugged it back in today and that digit is now completely dead. Not sure if it’s purely coincidence that it’s happened since I took the case off or not.

Is the tube dead or is there something else going on? Really quite upset as I love this clock 🤦‍♂️

Clearing up cloudy Mathmos fluid

Hi all, is there any advice on this without filtering? I know with Schylling lamps there’s a cycling procedure that’s recommended but before spending the hours I wondered if this worked with Mathmos too.

All my other lamps have a slight cloudiness to them when cold, but they clear up when at operating temp - this doesn’t, at least on the 1 run I’ve put on it.

Bought this Rolling Stones lamp on Vinted advertised as “new and unused” which was clearly bullshit as it’s now the cloudiest lamp I own - missing bulb & the box had an eBay label on it addressed to the person I bought it from, further confirming it was bought to use.

These lamps released last November though, how much of a hammering will it have taken to look like this in such a short time?

Bottle glued to base?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Looks to be a renamed Schylling - “Tinc Blob Lamp”. Bought it as not working, thought cool I’ll change the bulb - nope, the cap and based are glued on! 😂😂

After one of my previous posts about my violet/turquoise Rokit having wax stick to the side of the bottle, I emptied the whole thing out and re-poured the wax & liquid, only for it to start sticking again after a couple of uses.

Decided screw it and changed the whole lot for clear/plum. This has 4 Astro bottles of wax in it & 3 Astro’s of liquid. No sticking so far (2 runs ~11 hours) although I did have a hairy moment at the ~5 hour mark where the wax came detached from one side of the coil and floated/rolled round in a blob on one side. Turned off and let it settle for a minute to fix, hopefully doesn’t happen again 😂😂

Hi all, got this messed up (but boxed) 1998 Astro Baby off eBay and I’m conflicted on how to go about restoring it, I have a lot of lamps so the plan was the fix it up for fun and sell it.

Should I return it to blue/green as it was originally or do something different like a violet/green or blue/orange?
