Drainage

How does drainage work with the portable air cons? I've just got the Jack Stonehouse 12000btu. The manual says the unit will tell me when it's full and needs emptying. The drainage hole is right at the bottom. How on earth do you empty it, it's massive and heavy so can't really lift it up to get something underneath it?! Also some people say they have theirs draining all the time and they fill a whole bucket each day. What should I be doing please?

Those who have installed Aircon but no shading or passive cooling, why?

Is it expense? Listed status? Planning permission? Aesthetic?
ETA: e.g. awnings, brise soleil, canopies, external shutters, roller shutters, trees, window films etc.

New unit not feeling as cold as I expected

Probably just me expecting too much but we bought 9000 btu unit for our small bedroom.

We have the 1.5m hose it came with vented out though a 4mm perspex sheet which is tight against the Frome with hook and loop tape. The hole for the hose is also sealed and airtight.

I have the unit plugged into the mains.

It goes down to 17 but the rooms at a steady 20 even though on high fan speed for a few hours.

Should I expect more or is there something else I need to do like dehumidify the room first?

Gave up this year and got an AC.

Was lucky enough to get an AC by Bosch on Amazon last Wednesday, got delivered in a day. This is the Bosch 5100. This was expensive (£699) but to live normally and peacefully I don’t mind a few hundred quid trade off.

First impression: It’s really good, cools our attic room from 30-24 degrees really quick. Will put a longer review in a few days. Our attic room gets really hot and stuffy because of all the insulation in attic and direct sunlight.

The window kit i ordered was a bit too big so need to fix it. Original hose is not long enough so it’s on a table rn but any suggestions on a good extra hose?

(These still pop up in stock on random times on Amazon so keep checking.)

Portable air con leaking underneath?

Hi all I managed to score one of the Jack Stonehouse air con units. Ran it for the first time today, was okay. However when I moved it I noticed all this water had leaked underneath? I drained it and there was about 500ml water I drained out but is it meant to leak like this?

Did the dual hose thing

After seeing everyone do dual hose modifications to their portable aircons, I've jumped on the bandwagon with my own take. Why not, it's a bit of fun and if everything goes well the AC will work better afterwards.

Didn't really want to make one out of cardboard, and I don't have the brains to make something and get it 3D printed, so I repurposed some bits you can get on Amazon/Aliexpress.

Wanted it to be as easy as possible to make, require minimal tools and skill, be fully and cleanly reversible (no tape), and effective.

And it does work, it's pretty air tight aside from the small bit exposed above the box (see third picture). I got pretty lucky that I was able to find such a conveniently sized box.

The real test would be how effective the aircon will be when it heats up again on Wednesday.

Supplies:

Bought an aircon hose, hose attachment (for a Comfee unit apparently, it was just the cheapest one I could find), pipe insulation, and an outside inlet/outlet piece for £24.71 in total from Aliexpress. Note I used coins (basically AliEx points), so it would be £10 more w/o points.

Found a plastic box roughly the size of the condenser inlet for £11.99 on Amazon, and an automotive pollen filter that fits the box (BMW part # 64312284828 which is 188x187x25mm) for £9.99 a pair on eBay.

Box will be attached to aircon using velcro straps which was £4.60 a roll.

Sundries and tools include a hot glue gun w/ glue, zip rivets, cheap flat window/door seals (which feels like it's made of PU), a drill and a drill bit, and some way to cut the plastic as well as clean up the cuts/holes you make (I used an angle grinder and a dremel).

Methodology:

Drilled holes on the edges on the hose attachment bracket and bottom of plastic box, then cut a hole the size of the hole of the attachment into the bottom of the box, apply seals to bottom of the attachment piece, then secure hose attachment bracket to box using zip rivets and hot glue (ensuring air tight seal).

Apply seals to top of box. Optionally make a seating area for the pollen filter at a suitable location inside the box. You can make this out of anything, really. I used leftover seals, but you could fashion something out of cardboard or use hot glue to make a lip. I did this as I didn't want insects and other large debris getting eaten by my aircon, and a pollen filter of this type shouldn't be too restrictive.

I didn't cut the tails of the zip rivets in case the aircon was choking for air. I can easily add a 140mm fan or something to the box if need be using the rivets as an attachment point. I definitely not cut them because I couldn't be arsed.

The Comfee hose attachment thing ended up being slightly too big for the 5.9 inch hose, so I used more window seals and a bit of hot glue to make the hose fit correctly (I didn't glue to the hose to the piece, just effectively made the receptacle smaller so the hose fit with friction).

Assemble hose (sleeve + outdoor inlet), then strap box assembly to aircon's arse. Then attach hose to box and feed inlet hose outside. Done.

Portable Aircon Vibrations

Got a Jack Stonehouse 12000 BTU unit and whilst it’s not the quietest does a good job.
However I have noticed there is a resonance/vibration coming from it, not in the room it’s in but in the room under it and I’m potentially concerned my neighbour could get annoyed at it.
What’s the best way I could potentially reduce/dampen this vibration noise, for context standard uk older house with carpet floor and wooden floor boards under it.

Heat reflective film on windows

Hey everyone, thinking of some heat reflective film on our living room windows. They get the sun from around 3 -7 and turn it into a furnace. Any recommendations for what to buy?

Warning: Scam site in the UK

Just to let you know that there is at least one scam site pretending to be Meaco.

It's at meacouk <dot> shop.

Beware! They are advertising on Facebook (and probably other places).

Need longer exhaust pipe

Just had my Klarstein pro breeze delivered, but the exhaust pipe is too short as I have high window.

The manual says the diameter is 15cm, but I can’t seem to find the right one in wickes or b&q. Most of them are aluminium foil? I’m looking for a hard plastic one like the one it came with
.

TIA

Has Meaco effectively now stopped selling air conditioners for average size UK bedrooms?

I'm looking to buy a Meaco portable air conditioner and the lowest product in their Cirro range is 12,000 BTU, and according to their website suitable for room sizes of 20 to 30 m2. My bedroom is 11 m2 and when I search online it says 12,000 BTU is complete overkill for such a small room, and will 'short cycle' on and off, and not have time to properly dehumidify the room.

The 14,000 and 16,000 BTU products in the Cirro range have inverters, which I don't mind paying extra for, but again I'm reading online that even with an inverter it wouldn't be able to scale down its output for a room this size and would experience the same on/off issues, inability to dehumidify properly.

Has anybody been successfully using a 14k / 16k BTU Meaco Cirro (or similar with inverter) in a similar sized room?

Is this gap too much?

Hello, I had AC installed in my office 7 years ago.

3 floor house, office on top floor.

I only just spotted how big the gap is where the ac cables go in the house.

Its a bad angle as there is a forest right next door so I cant go back more.

I have no idea if it was installed like that 7 years ago or it has somehow degraded over time?

Seen in B&M today..

I was extremely hot today waking around B&M and to my amazement I passed by a working AC (safe to say I was glued to it for 5mins 😅) however I liked it so much that I took photos of the model so I can buy one myself but was perplexed as it was only connected to power and I didn’t see any hose attached and I thought that would be great for my flat as I couldn’t accommodate a hose 😅

Looked the model up and it should have a hose attached for it to work properly (of course, what was I thinking 😒).
Without a hose attached to vent the hot air out, it will cause it to simultaneously cool and heat the same room, resulting in zero net cooling and eventual overheating.. I mean isn’t that dangerous ?

Physics works

TLDR: I did the mod, and it works

I bit the bullet in last year's heat wave and got a portable single hose unit.

This year's heatwave was worse and really highlighted the issue with these single hoses.

It blows cold air, but the moment it stops i'm instantly warm in bed.

3D printing and a bit of tape + a cardboard window kit, and voila the physics works.

Last upgrade will be a custom perspex sheet on the window, anyone tried it?

Reminder - let your unit settle before first turning it on

With the recent surge in buying of portable AC units and with a lot of us being unfamiliar with them in the UK, I thought it may be helpful to remind/make people aware of the importance of letting them sit for a while before first switching them on.

I’ve added below a link that explain it better than I can the reasons why and for how long to wait (‘How long should a portable air conditioner sit before turning it on?’ via Quora has good info also but Reddit won’t let me link it).

For TLDR purposes though; compressor oil & refrigerant moves to where it shouldn’t be during transit - allow 8-24 hours depending on how roughly it was transported to allow these fluids to settle back to where they need to be to prevent damage to the internal components.

Got my new unit today (AMPS from sterling power on eBay) having hose difficulties- any ideas?

The hose is meant to be attached to this fitting which attaches itself to the unit for the heat to go out through via the window.

However the bloody hose won’t stay attached to the fitting for love nor money. Tried taping it together but no joy. Any ideas?

So I’ve just bought one of these from cef (electrical wholesaler if your in the uk these are in stock at around 850) it’s getting hot this week and my plan is to put both young kids in one bedroom and use these with ducts and a window kit until I have more time to properly core the wall and fix , can anyone see any potential flaws in my plan ?

Air con from JoyBuy.co.uk

Hi, just wanted to tell people here abt the ac I just received.

Got it on joybuy as a pre-order on 25th of June. Never heard of them before; checked trustpilot reviews and decided to chance it. Bought it using a credit card, just in case.

Estimated delivery time was 6th of July. Received it today.
Seems like this company is legit after all.

Going to wait until tomorrow to test it out (thank you to everyone who said that refrigerant needs to settle first)

I made my room hotter to make it colder

TLDR: Running a dehumidifier with the window shut may make you feel colder even if it heats the room up.
Room was 32°c but “felt like” 42°c.
Ran dehumidifier, room heated to 33°c but “felt like” 33°c.

I’m on the spectrum and one of my quirky little obsessions is humidity, originating from a damp problem in my bedroom.

I own loads of hygrometers (things that show you the relative humidity in a room) to prevent damp, and a 12l dehumidifier. I found that in the winter, when I went in the room and it was very humid (>60%) that the room would feel FREEZING. I ran the dehumidifier, got the humidity to like 40%, and the room felt amazingly warm (relative to how it was before I ran the dehumidifier).

I went down a rabbit hole the other day and thought maybe the inverse would be true, because everyone who defends themselves against Americans etc saying “29 degrees, that’s not even hot!” references how the humidity of the British Isles makes it hotter.

So I begrudgingly closed the window despite it being cooler outside at the time, and turned the dehumidifier on. I started at 32°c, at 75% relative humidity, which was absolutely unbearable, and let it run for a few hours. I ended on 33°c and 35% relative humidity, because the air was being heated by the condenser in the dehumidifier and the window was not open to let the hot air escape.

It felt SO MUCH BETTER. I later looked at this chart, and saw that what I started with, 75% RH + 32°c, had a heat index output (the “feels like” temperature) of 42°c, and what I ended up with (33°c and 35%) had a heat index of 33°c.

Maybe don’t do this if you don’t have a hygrometer (Though they’re very cheap on Amazon, etc) because if your room isn’t humid to begin with it’s a waste of time.

Human sweat cools us down when it evaporates, but at humidities of 55% and more, the sweat begins evaporating less efficiently, and this makes a huge difference to what heat feels like.
