I’m a product design student currently working on a medical device project focused on children, and I’m finding it surprisingly difficult to access reliable information from doctors and nurses.

I understand that hospitals have strict policies around patient privacy and medical data, but even getting general professional insights through interviews or conversations has been challenging. Some hospitals are very hesitant to share any information, which makes it difficult to understand the real-world problems and workflows that healthcare professionals deal with.

As a design student, I’m not looking for private patient data or anything confidential. I mainly want professional insights, experiences, common challenges, and feedback that can help me design a safer and more practical device.

If anyone here is a doctor, nurse, medical student, healthcare researcher, medical device designer, or has experience working with hospitals, I’d really appreciate some advice on:

  • How can design students ethically access healthcare-related research and insights?
  • Are there communities, forums, organisations, or platforms where I can connect with healthcare professionals?
  • What is the best way to approach doctors or hospitals for research interviews?
  • Are there any publicly available databases, research papers, or resources you would recommend?

Pediatricians: Need insights on IV cannula movement in children for a student design project

Hi everyone! I’m a Product Design student working on a project to develop a wrist support/splint for children receiving IV drips.

I’m trying to understand the clinical perspective and would really appreciate insights from pediatricians who regularly deal with IV cannulation and pediatric patients.

A few questions:

  1. What are the most common problems caused by children moving or bending their wrist while receiving an IV?
  2. Which specific wrist/hand movements are most likely to cause cannula displacement, blockage, leakage, or discomfort?
  3. Should the wrist ideally be completely immobilized, or should some movement be allowed?
  4. What areas around the cannula need to remain visible and accessible for monitoring?
  5. What clinical or safety factors should a designer consider when developing a pediatric IV wrist splint?

Any practical experiences, common complications, or advice on what not to do would be extremely helpful.

Pediatric nurses: What problems do you face with IV cannulas and wrist immobilization in children?

Hi everyone! I’m a Product Design student working on a university healthcare-design project. I’m currently researching and redesigning a wrist splint/support for children with peripheral IV cannulas.

The specific problem I’m investigating is unwanted wrist movement after IV cannulation. I’m trying to understand how different age groups behave with an IV, which movements create problems, how nurses currently manage them, and what could be improved in existing supports.

I’m currently in the research and concept development stage. This is not a clinical trial, and I’m not asking for patient records, identifiable information, or clinical data. I’m looking for professional experience and general, non-identifiable observations to help establish design requirements before developing a concept.

I’d especially appreciate input from pediatric ward nurses who regularly manage peripheral IVs in children:

  1. Which age groups are most difficult to manage when they have a peripheral IV, and why?
  2. What movements or behaviors do children commonly make that cause problems with the IV cannula or tubing?
  3. How do you currently prevent excessive movement of the IV hand/wrist? What problems do you experience with the current method?
  4. What discomfort or complaints do children commonly have with existing IV splints/supports?
  5. Does the current support make it difficult to monitor the IV site, check for swelling/leakage, adjust the cannula, or manage the tubing?
  6. What parts of the hand/wrist need to remain accessible or visible while the child is wearing the support?
  7. What happens after the IV is removed? Are there any specific aftercare steps for the cannula site that the support/design should take into consideration?
  8. If you could change one thing about the current way pediatric IV hands are supported, what would you change?

I’m not looking for patient-identifying details or individual medical histories. If you share examples, please keep them general and anonymous.

I have a limited 2 and half -week research period, so even a few minutes of professional insight would be extremely helpful in making sure I’m designing around the actual clinical problem rather than assumptions.

I am Lost

I am already in my 4th year of Bachelor in Industrial Design and I feel like i don't know anything about the industry. I feel like I haven't learn anything needed to survive in the industry my skills are very lacking to land a good internship now that I look at the skill requirement they have. I am so lost what to do I do have a portfolio and projects but in compare to other student designer work I feel like the projects are just very basic and not up to the mark.
