RIP Roger Barrett

RIP Roger Barrett

We know you as "Syd"; the majority of your life, a life that is quite frankly none of our business, was spent as Roger Barrett, and I hope it was a good one.

Today, Pink Floyd fans are remembering Syd, but the people who were close to him are remembering Roger, and I hope the remembrance is sweet.

This may actually, unironically be the most iconic line Gilmour ever wrote

Maybe my brain is just totally brainrotted by the circlejerk but if you can think of a lyric (that he unquestionably wrote) or quote of his that is more widely known and/or quoted, tell me, because I can't think of one off the top of my head right now.

The Deltarune Chapter 5 Secret Boss...

...is a character named Pink who is denying their own physical and emotional needs out of fear of being vulnerable, who, after finally being honest about their inner turmoil with help from people that they have been trying to push away, accepts that they do need connection to others in order to be the person they want to be. Now where have I heard that before?

They're also a magical catgirl. But. Y'know. Details.

Let's make a "Pink Floyd, But With No Pink, And Hold The Floyd" playlist

The intent is to make a playlist of Pink Floyd songs that don't sound like Pink Floyd. The criteria are:

  1. It's from any album from A Saucerful of Secrets through The Final Cut, because anything from the Barrett or Gilmour era is automatically going to sound pretty different from the type of sound most people associate with Pink Floyd
  2. It should be a song that, if you play it for an average music listener, and they ask "Who is this by?" and you say "Pink Floyd", they should react with confusion, skepticism, and/or surprise.
  3. It has to be a good song (in that it is both a song and it is at least good), it can't just be a shitpost or a flop. So, nothing off Ummagumma, no non-song audio bits like A Spanish Piece, and no little interstice songs like Speak to Me or Stop.

Here's the candidates I have so far:

  • Point Me At The Sky
  • The Nile Song
  • If
  • San Tropez
  • Seamus
  • The Gold It's In The...
  • Pigs on the Wing (Part 1)
  • Pigs on the Wing (Part 2)
  • Young Lust
  • Vera
  • Bring the Boys Back Home
  • The Trial
  • Not Now John

What else would you say fits this criteria?

real reaction footage of me listening to Dark Globe for the first time and realizing that the reason why Roger's voice sounds so different on the wall is because he was mimicking Syd Barrett's vocal delivery, and then remembering that Roger's voice in fact never really went entirely back to normal

An Important PSA

It's spelled Pete TOWNSHEND with an H.

Townsend = Town's End = The end of the town

Townshend = Town's Hend = The hend of the town

What's a hend? No clue. I don't think my town has one. But that's how his name is spelled.

"Unfortunately, really, we mark a sort of era. We’re in danger of becoming a relic of the past. For some people, we represent their childhood of 1967: the underground in London, the free concert in Hyde Park and so on." -Nick Mason, 1973
