My Wall fan-edit: The Wall, Remodeled

The Wall, Remodeled [Version 1.1]

By Evelyn M. Harmon

The first time I listened to The Wall, I felt like it was a good album, but just a little incomplete. I was right. The final, released album was missing two songs, as well as multiple sections of music in other songs. After finding The Wall Complete’s website, my official journey into the Pink Floyd rabbit hole began. I began pursuing many extended Wall edits to listen to, particularly “The Wall - Definitive Edition” and sq1tl’s “The Wall Extended Version Two.”

But each one bothered me in that they often added on a bit too much, whether it be demos that should have stayed demos, mistaken inclusions from The Final Cut (which is NOT just a bunch of Wall outtakes), Roger Waters solo songs or even a song from Wish You Were Here. I came to wish there were some sort of edit that focused exclusively on strengthening the Wall’s core without adding on much in the terms of extra fluff. That is what this edit is.

In my edit, I only use songs from the actual released album, as well as the two songs added in the film. I focused on extending and enhancing each of these songs to the best of my ability using live versions, sections of the film, and demos, but the core album is otherwise unaltered. I hope you enjoy it.

The Wall and all associated material is owned by Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. I do not own the rights to the Wall, although I do own a physical copy of the album. Listening to this edit without owning a copy of the original album is both illegal and a dick move.

Side 1:

In The Flesh? Part One - used film audio of Pink’s Hotel room door during the “we came in?” section, crossfaded from album intro into the film intro with extended guitars and sound effects (film intro restored to its original pitch), inserted 16-bar choir section from In The Flesh Part Two on side 4 just before vocals [runs 4:18; added 0:59]

The Thin Ice - used film extended intro, added live vocals onto Mother verse, live outro transitions into Tigers intro [runs 3:00; added 0:33]

When The Tigers Broke Free - added song, used Echoes intro and first verse, combined film part 1 outro and part 2 intro to form an interlude, second verse from Final Cut, Echoes third verse, film plane death segues into extended guitar solo from Thin Ice Demo [runs 5:04; added 1:21 from Echoes base]

Another Brick In The Wall, Part One - used sq1tl’s “Another Brick In The Wall, Pts. 1-3” for isolated intro, used sq1tl’s extended edit version for added “woo!”, track change happens in more natural place [runs 3:35; added 0:24]

The Happiest Days of Our Lives - use film “ahhh” section, track change happens in more natural place [runs 1:42; shorter by 0:09]

Another Brick In The Wall, Part Two - added Teacher interjections to second verse (modelled after film), use film destruction noises during guitar solo, reuse second verse vocals during fire in guitar solo [runs 3:58; shorter by 0:01]

Mother - based on “The Wall - Definitive Edition” (source of edit for film chorus 1 into extended solo, as well as chorus 2 into extended outro), use live extended intro, album verses 1 and 2 with film instrumental underneath, film vocals for chorus, added live harmonies on “ooh babe”, aforementioned extended solo (using live version), film vocals for verse 3 layered onto album vocals, album chorus 3 with film instrumentals, live harmonies on ooh babe, live extended outro with trim and applause removed [runs 7:39; added 2:04]

Total side 1 runtime is 29:16; longer by approx 8:22

Side 2:

Goodbye, Blue Sky - Demo vocals for harmonies, added demo synth solo, added full live keyboard suite and segue into Empty Spaces [runs 4:40; added 1:53]

Empty Spaces, Part One / What Shall We Do Now - added song, used film version as base, removed phone call, used live “what shall we use,” added live harmonies on “bury bones, break up homes,” live “backs to the wall” leads into film “backs to the wall” and broken glass [runs 3:31]

Young Lust - used “The Wall - Definitive Edition” as basis for demo, added film WSWDN outro sound effects, added demo keys and bass, added live keys intro and instrumental section, used sq1tl’s “Young Lust (Single Version)” keyboard solo and outro, used The Wall Reconstructed Cerebellum’s Edit’s “The Wall Young Lust Collect Call Isolated” for isolated phone call [runs 5:46; added 2:16]

One Of My Turns - used sq1tl’s extended version of One Of My Turns, removed n-word from Dam Busters audio (it’s just kinda distracting y’know?), added on the single outro, it sounds like shit but it doesn’t sound shitty enough that I’m bothered to fix it [runs 3:33, somehow it’s shorter by 4 seconds, god I fucked up, oh well]

Don’t Leave Me Now - used sq1tl’s extended edit for second “ooh babe” section, used “The Wall - Definitive Edition” transition into Empty Spaces [runs 4:50; added 0:34]

Empty Spaces, Part Two - used “The Wall - Definitive Edition” version, added Don’t Leave Me Now channel-flipping and scream [runs 2:03; shorter by 0:05]

Another Brick In The Wall, Part Three / The Last Few Bricks - used film version of Another Brick Part 3, looped “all in all” a second time, added Live In Berlin “da-dun”, used live The Last Few Bricks (with some Live In Berlin orchestra but it’s very soft), used first 3:36 of andygookey’s “Pink Floyd, Last Brick Blues. Improvisation Live Feb. 1980” for extended jam, transition into Goodbye Cruel World [runs 8:24; added 7:09]

Goodbye, Cruel World - used royalty free stone sliding and gate closing sound effects, used Schlomo Polonsky’s “The Wall Movie Soundtrack Album” for wind and footstep effects [runs 1:24; added 0:10]

Total side 2 runtime is 34:11; longer by approx 15 minutes.

Side 3:

Hey You - added live harmonies on vocals, used film outro and segue into Is There Anybody Out There [runs 4:48; shorter by 0:02]

Is There Anybody Out There - used film version, added truncated audio of film shaving scene [runs 3:23; added 0:41]

Nobody Home - strategically alternated between film and album audio to avoid n-word [again, distracting] while still having most of the improvements of the film version, used compete audio for film asylum scene [runs 4:46; added 1:23]

Vera / Bring The Boys Back Home - as Roger Waters described this song as the “centerpiece of the album,” I wanted my edit to work hard to make this song as impactful as possible. used sq1tl’s extended edit of “The Post War Dream” for Thatcher audio, transitioned into Prelude demo to introduce Vera Lynn to the audience, used radio static to segue into song, used single version of Bring The Boys Back Home with album version underneath for second verse [runs 4:36; added 1:31]

Comfortably Numb - used Finn G’s “Comfortably Numb (with PULSE guitar studio version)” for edit of studio version with Pulse extended guitar solo [runs 8:56; added 2:34]

Total side 3 runtime is 26:29; longer by approx 6:04

Side 4:

The Show Must Go On - live version, used studio “take me home” section, used studio outro, removed applause from intro [runs 2:36; added 1:00]

In The Flesh - playing film version on top of album version, removed 16-bar choral section [runs 3:56; shorter by 0:20]

Run Like Hell - used sq1tl’s extended edit for intro, used live version for instrumental sections and film version for the verses, studio keyboard solo into live soundscape and outro, studio button and crowd chanting [runs 7:13; added 2:50]

Waiting For The Worms - live crowd chanting, film “cannot reach me now,” live “Sitting in a bunker” with demo instrumentals underneath, live “waiting” with demo instrumentals underneath,” live “would you like to see,” live outro with demo instrumentals underneath [runs 4:15; added 0:18]

Stop! - extended door-unlocking sounds [runs 0:35; added 0:04]

The Trial - film door opening into live extended intro, film prosecutor and schoolmaster verse transition to film “crazy” chorus, live wife verse, film mother verse, film second chorus, film judge section with live “go on judge” line, film outro into perfectly timed album wall destruction [runs 5:49; added 0:30]

Outside The Wall - used “The Wall - Definitive Edition” extended intro, used sq1tl’s extended edit for It’s Never Too Late section, fixed perfect loop [runs 3:53; added 2:09]

Total side 4 length is 28:17; longer by approx 6:28

Total edit length is roughly 1 hour, 58 minutes and 13 seconds

You know those commercials (usually for banks) where they take an old massive hit song, slow it down to like 50% and make the singer mumble the lyrics, so you think "boy, you surely ruined this song, made it forgettable and took away everything that made it good in the first place"? Yeah...

No Love For Syd Barrett Years or Julia Dream

That shit's a million times better than lame overplayed 'Wish You Were Here'. People rank 'Wish You Were Here' above songs like 'Comfortably Numb' and 'Time'. It's such an average song musically. And the lyrics whatever... I prefer the others in that regard too. 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' too... it has it's moments but too long and not on that level either IMO.

'Wish You Were Here' the album doesn't have a bad song on it but still, it's not the best. To me 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' and 'Welcome To the Machine' are mild standouts but not among the very best. And people constantly ranking them as the very best Pink Floyd songs. They treat Syd Barrett's stuff as early throwaway. So many gems early and all throughout but all anyone ever plays in a public setting 'Wish You Were Here'. So sick of it.

/uj The Wall is a fucking masterpiece

The first and only time I cried with tears at the age of 19 other than the times in childhood when primary school or parents were involved was when I found out how much Pink’s lowest point of becoming an all powerful dictator resonates with my thoughts. I remembered all the times where I as a neurodivergent person felt humiliated since childhood and thought of taking a ‘revenge’ from those people as an invincible man in my fantasy and realised why should I do any good for this world when it has only hurt me?

Did you know? David Gilmour was sued by Nintendo for leaking the Nintendo Game Boy fourteen years before its release

After a legal battle of 35 years, they settled out of court.

In the trailer for The Wall (2015), Roger inexplicably used a sound clip from an old viral video where a woman was crying and making whale noises in a voicemail. I've never seen anyone else point this out, but it haunts me.

If Roger Waters locked you in his basement

I think I'd be ok if Roger Waters locked me in his basement, provided that I can still hear him practice his bass and sing songs. Even if the sound is muffled and he just plays scales or guitar boogie, I'd be ok with it. I wouldn't be looking for anything weird happen between us, although it probably will.

What about you all?

If “Pink Floyd sends more people to space than NASA” were a weird-ass ad campaign…aka Gini

I give them credit for going all the way to Morocco for it though. That’s true dedication, man. (That said, the totem photo is legit cool, and I admit I’m saying this mostly because of Rick’s face card 😍)

How recognisable were Pink Floyd?

Posting here because the other sub likes boys but I was watching Gilmour perform with The Who in 1996 and when he walked on stage, everyone started cheering. I was under the impression that they were the type of band who could walk around on the streets without being recognised at all. Is this true and if so, when did this change? I guess by AMLOR they were maybe doing more interviews for the DSOT tour but idk.
