Massive Workshop Fire Burns 8 Acres, 8 Dead, More Follow

I think we all know this one. "The biggest workshop in the county" - Murray's Costume Manor -- a manufacturing hub that reached far beyond Utah limits, taken over by Fazbear Entertainment after buying it out and saving it from debts.

This article truly shows the community involvement in this tragedy. This is only one news story about the fire, with a separate article talking about the "Tragedy of Team 012": More than half a dozen Fazbear employees were tasked to venture to the abandoned facility to acquire company assets weeks (could even be months) prior to the fire. They were reported missing by their families, but law enforcement and the company did little about it until one fateful morning on September 8th, 1979 when residents witnessed a pillar of smoke coming from the middle of the woods. When fire engines and volunteers arrived, they were too late. They found the facility consumed in flames, and it was already reaching the wooded area near Zion. They contacted nearby departments and together, they washed the fire away, and it only took almost half a day of community collaboration.

The fire leaves a mark to the town as one event that truly brought them together, sort of like the 1983 State Street River, where volunteers joined hands to control the flood.

However, despite its famous stand, it opened slightly a deeper connection -- a connection of incidents, accidents, and eventually.... homicide.

Transcript:

>Massive workshop fire burns 8 acres, 8 dead, more follow

>Early Saturday morning, the largest manufacturing facility in the county, Murray’s Costume Manor ignited in flames near Zion National Park “due to faulty wiring,” Fire Chief Gooser said.

>Firemen responded to the factory fire at 7:00 a.m. when nearby residents saw a pillar of smoke coming from the middle of the wooded area.

>Upon reaching the burning building, the damage was already spreading towards the trees. Gooser called nearby departments all over the county to help stop the fire: Springdale, Washington City, and St. George.

>According to Joseph Emphey, the fire reached its highest point by 8 a.m., completely consuming the facility before additional reinforcements arrived. The fire caused blockades all over Zion and suspended classes.

>When the hydrants ran out, fire volunteers and residents collected huge amounts of water from the river to refuel tankers. Local businesses used old construction and agriculture trucks to carry water from the river and up towards the fire.

>Jerry Fitz, a volunteer truck driver who helped carry water through dirt roads, said the smoke was so thick, he couldn’t see a thing when he got there.

>The fire took half of the day to stop, and caused several million dollars in damage.

>Although the fire did not reach any towns, it burned the surrounding eight acres, including the Murray Mansion, but firemen put out the fire in time before it could destroy the home. When firemen and volun-teers surveyed the ruined facility and the mansion, they discovered four bodies amidst the wreckage and four more outside.

>

>Four individuals were found inside the facility by firemen. An investigation led by Sheriff’s Deputy Timothy Peterson discovered two Fazbear Entertainment-bran-ded vans nearby: one left abandoned in the parking lot and another in a wreckage just along the road.

>

>Due to the items and uniforms found on the victims, police concluded that the four victims are the following: Dominic Marquez, Harry J. Simmons, Glendall Smith, and Terrence Thompson.

>The other four were discovered by motorists and residents in the surrounding area: Yule Watts, William J. Wyatt, Michael A. Gerhardt, and Arnold S. Doss.

>

>The investigation insisted that the fire started after something sparked the flam- mable fuel systems that ran through the building, origin-ating from the basement, which could not be excavated due to complications, said Gooser.

>

>The four victims inside the facility were Fazbear Enter-tainment workers, who were apparently reported missing by their families weeks prior. They were previously tasked to acquire assets and property from the facility, but they never answered back despite Fazbear Entertain-ment’s repeated callbacks.

>In response to the tragedy, Fazbear Entertainment stat-ed, “Our dearest technicians who perished in the fire will forever be remembered and their families compensated for their losses.”

>When asked about the fire and the second company van owned by Arnold Doss, the company insisted, “The fire is indeed a tragedy, and we are proud of the community for its contribution in stopp-ing the fire. We sent Arnie to acquire company assets and to check in on the welfare of our dear technicians.”

A little piece of info on part 2.

Fazbear Enterprises is a mega-corporation and conglomerate that specializes in a variety of products and services, mainly in relation to technology and entertainment.

Ever since the late 20th century, Fazbear Enterprises has been a topic of discussion. Every American family knows what this company is all about, but nobody had ever the slightest idea of what lied deeper behind its storefront. Many will know Fazbear Enterprises for its commercial foods, entertainment industries, community involvement, local stores, and technology, but they don't realize that Fazbear Enterprises holds so much more than what they claimed.

The 70s and 80s were the decades when federal agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation has started to shift more resources towards white-collar crime and corporate corruption. After a series of incidents and accidents involving Fazbear Enterprises' products and facilities, OSHA began investigating the company's workplace safety practices. Separately, the FBI began examining the corporation's financial, legal, and business dealings."

The small investigation began as early as the late 1970s, initially conducted by Agents Gordon Shamcey Jykell and Edwin Lee Torrace following the Murray Costume Manor fire. The recovery of Fazbear-owned vehicles, employee remains, and corporate property at the destroyed facility raised questions about how Fazbear personnel had died at the site. According to secondary sources, Fazbear Entertainment claimed that the personnel found at the site were tasked to acquire general utilities and products. Further examination of the company records and documents recovered from the vehicles and communications records from Murray's Costume Manor vouched for Fazbear Entertainment's claims, but it had still led investigators to suspect possible fraud or irregularities surrounding Fazbear Enterprises' subsidiary, Fazbear Entertainment Inc., primarily based on recovered communications records. With these, the state forwarded the information to the bureau.

The FBI investigation initially focused on suspected criminal misconduct within the corporation, though the case remained relatively minor and largely speculative, with the bureau sending two agents to keep a close eye on the company. What began as questions surrounding the fire gradually expanded into suspicions of insurance fraud, corporate misconduct, concealment of evidence, bribery and witness intimidation, and questionable business acquisitions.

NOTE:

Most of these allegations were eventually dropped. Many were dismissed for lack of evidence, while others were found to have little or no basis. Frankly, some of the investigators' theories didn't make much sense.

Why did William Afton specifically murder 5 kids OVERNIGHT?

Why couldnt he just kidnap kids from different places? Was he jsut sloppy? I want to know the logic behind kidnapping five kids in his own establishment in one night. Did he do it for attention? He could've just kidnapped them in a series of days. Why kidnap them overnight?

Maybe he got carried away? Maybe something was happening and he had to hurry and kill as many kids?

Edited photograph of an 80s family with two daughters and one blonde girl (age 6-7).

Hey... I so, I used a stock photo of a family photo and basically swapped a face here. (You probably know which)

I was wondering if it looks kind of... obvious that it's photoshopped? I'm really trying to make it feel immersive!

This is for a fictional true crime I am currently writing about a family. I plan to censor most of the family members because I'll really just use this "particular character."

If it's obvious, tell me how to not make it obvious pleaseeee. Hahaha

"My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean"

In the late afternoon of June 26, widower Jeremy Young asked a friend to take Jeremy Jr. (Jem) out for a birthday event at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in Hurricane, Utah. Young told his son that he'll stay behind to work late at the mill where he worked until eight o' clock to see him just before the party ends. However, in a drowsy state since morning, Young found himself falling asleep moments before he decided to leave. He woke up in the early morning and was struck with guilt.

He returned home only to find little Jem's room empty. When he was about to pick up the phone to call his friend, he realized that she had left a voice message for him.

>Beep! "Hey, Jeremy, it's Patty. It's my shift. I left at 7:30. Uh, usually you come early and I would see you right before I leave, but I didn't, so I decided to leave you this message just in case. Um, Jem's at Freddy's attending Cassidy Jude's birthday party, just reminding you again. You Ditzy. Alright, hope you two had fun. When I left they were bringing out the big chocolate cake. Dill said the cakes taste better than the pizza so... yeah. Oh! And... he promised to find Jem to make sure he doesn't miss the birthday dinner. If you're looking for him, he's probably with Dill. Okay, good night. Got to go!"

Immediately, he returned to the pizzeria to find the building empty and closed. Afterwards, he drove right towards the town hall to report his son missing. There in the lobby, he noticed a couple sitting next to each other, clasping each others' hands, frozen.

This is only one of many victims of the series of disappearances that marked an everlasting stain in the heart of Washington County. Follow now for a "totally" great (ignore pre-comments on the book) true-crime thriller titled, "The Washington County Disappearances" When justice failed to protect. Catch you on the flipside, folks. *NOTE: I swear, critics really hate children's authors who decide to write true crime. They say, "It's like a 15-year-old wrote it," or "It looks like the author can't decide whether to make it a crime thriller inspired by true events or BASED on true events," and I'd reply, "Yeah, nice to know I got that youthful glory! Unlike you." Hah! Anyway... they'd also say, "If you're gonna disrespect those close to the tragedy, at least make it feel more professional or something," and that came straight from my wife. Isn't that wonderful...

How would Afton do in a police interrogation?

Would you rather he answer questions simply until he decides to get a lawyer or would you rather he be more talkative, "not serious," and dodgy?

[2003] "It still brings a shiver down my spine when I look back to that night." -- Sgt. Herald Lee Beckham

This is a glimpse of what surveillance footage caught during that night. The girl in the image is Cassidy Jude Christensen, 10 -- the last child to be seen lured into a back room of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

The suspect, wearing a company mascot of a retired character, appears to be luring the child from the restrooms to some undisclosed area.

Investigators eventually found where the suspect took the children, but all they discovered was strong suspicion of foul play. It was then they believed that it was no longer an ordinary case of ransom nor child trafficking. It was something more abnormal and more sinister than anything they could ever imagine.

If you want to learn more, follow up on the news on Gerald Lieber's upcoming novel, "The Lost of Innocence, 'When Justice Failed to Protect'" -- a true-crime take on the disappearances that changed America and the very town where it all began.

[2003] CANCELLED DUE TO GAS LEAKS, May 20, 1985 - Washington County News

Howdy, folks. It's Gerald Lieber again.

Found this on the same site where I get to find old Utah newspapers. Man, did you know this restaurant existed? You guys probably know, considering its... infamous reputation.

No idea who the writer was. This was just like... a month before the MCI.

And we all know who Afton was.

I might add some photos to my crime book. If they don't like how it was written, they can look at the photos.

"Occult Connections In Missing Children Case Not Proven" - Matthew Cohen, Associated Press Writer.

Got this from a digital newspaper forum or site. I'm surprised it was much cleaner than the rest of the pages. I guess it was a printing error or printing upgrade. Hahaha

The top article will be talked about another time.

Fun fact. The line "Hurricane Town Hall Meeting" was a mistake made by Cohen. In fact, the supposed meeting took place at the Hurricane High School gymnasium, and the writer probably though it was the town hall considering that people called it a "Town Meeting." A lot of news writers made mistakes when they were documenting the Missing Children Incident or "The Hurricane Five."

I got the picture of the layout from a news article on a local event around the same time as this one. I think it was August.

This true-crime will be a baller!

EDIT: The newspaper was from the Salt Lake Tribune. Yes, that was when it made national news. July 4!

Any suggestions on how to make this farm by the river bank look much better?

Using the All of Create mod pack here. I, uh, I want to make a decent looking farm. That wooden wall im the river is going to be a water plant of some sort.

Update on my true crime.

So I've been interviewing living relatives and locals. The best ones are in their 80s or 90s. They're just so easy to interview. One of them was hospitalized in an asylum, so I've been sending her secret notes. She thinks I'm a lover. Ha. Anyway, my wife's telling me not to do this, but I gotta chase my dreams somehow. Right?

These locals are so traditional, I'm tellin' ya. I go in and out of Nebraska to Utah and I'm spending more fuel than pages! Hahaha.

A brief summary of one of the later chapters of a true-crime novel I've been currently writing.

Hey, name's Gerald. Gerald Lieber. I am an author who is currently working on a non-fiction film inspired by the gruesome tales of southern Utah. Here's a short glimpse to what is to see. ;)

>"In XXXX, amidst the things that have been going on such as the dormant Fazbear Entertainment, the missing adults, and children, a detective by the name of Julianna Perkins investigated further and found evidence of a bigger-scale crime that pointed to one single man.

>Julianna Ann Perkins was the detective of the newly-built Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and is still on duty to this day.  She described herself as a tad self-centered and was always wanting the spotlight, since she was a little girl.

>Perkins along with a private investigator, Jeremy Sr. Collins (a former father of one of the missing children), discover and search abandoned places to solve the mystery of a missing journalist, Bronwen Light, and the missing children incident, wherein Perkins refused to believe the children are still alive, despite Collins’ insistence.

>The investigation revealed and was connected to the disappearance of Ralph XXXX, a former security guard and management member of the building.  When they attempted to communicate with the current night guard, management said that a man by the name of Mike Schmidt was fired due to the dismantling and destruction of the animatronic characters, and the spot for the position has been vacant ever since.  Bronwen Light previously attempted to work at Freddy’s but couldn’t.  She had evidently been fascinated with Freddy’s, based on what was found when authorities searched her home.

>Perkins and the private investigator eventually broke off due to a disagreement.  The investigator was then a victim of a deadly flash flood in Hildale, Utah in 2015 near while he was planning to hike.

>Years later, Julianna Perkins was eventually led to a home that was about to be destroyed when demolition workers found strange objects amidst the ruin.  She was also led to old artifacts that point to an incident that occurred many years ago."

More will be posted.

Are there any old photos of the Hurricane Pioneer Museum?

I've done a quick search on "Google", and I have not seen a single photo that is not on the official Washington County Historical Society website (WCHS)

I consulted my dad about any old photos he had and he showed me a picture when the museum was still a library and city building. It was a few months before La Verkin and Hurricane merged forces in '86 and city offices were moved to the Hurricane Spilsbury Mortuary in July before any official construction was built for these city offices.

He told me that after they replaced the old one with the new one, he was hesitant but excited to explore the new library, because he was just used to the old one. It had more books and had a bigger space, and he and his friends would go there to mess around or simply read the books there. He was like... 12 then.

I am curious if any of you have old photos of the museum before it was a museum that you are willing to share here.

Also, if you have any stories to share regarding this during the golden years, I think that would be great!

"AFFIDAVIT OF PROBABLE CAUSE IN SUPPORT OF ARREST WARRANT"

These are the first two pages of an affidavit regarding the arrest of the infamous William Afton.

Found this in a law or crime website. Some were found in Scribd. Printed the format and there they are. I'll show you the rest but I'm still printing the next pages.

The affidavit was made by Washington County Sheriff Kenneth Brown. The document consists of the details of the case involving the first missing children incident.
