How hard will it be to get a job on a MODU with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, but no offshore experience or experience working on ships or sea going vessels?
reddit.comIs it possible to qualify for Third Assistant Engineer under 46 CFR §11.516(a)(5) with an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology degree that has ABET-ETAC Accreditation (Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission)?
Detroit Michigan. Anyone here know about National Maritime Center/Coast Guard Regulations?
Im pursuing this degree at Wayne State University.
I’m trying to get a definitive answer about the education pathway to Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited under 46 CFR §11.516(a)(5)
I have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology from Wayne State University. The degree program is accredited by ABET through the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC)
Section 11.516(a)(5) provides a pathway to Third Assistant Engineer based on graduation from a mechanical or electrical engineering course of an ABET-accredited school of technology, combined with 6 months of qualifying service in the engine department.
The exact regulation states: "Graduation from the mechanical or electrical engineering course of a school of technology accredited by the ABET, together with 6 months of service in the engine department of steam, motor, or gas turbine-propelled vessels"
What I’m trying to determine is how NMC interprets the education requirement when the applicant's degree is ABET-ETAC Accredited (Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission) as opposed to ABET-EAC Accreditation (Engineering Accreditation Commission).
Specifically, does NMC consider an ABET-ETAC accredited B.S. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology to satisfy §11.516(a)(5), or does NMC interpret the regulation as requiring a traditional Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering program accredited through ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC)?
The wording “school of technology” is part of what makes me unsure how this is interpreted. The regulation does not specifically say EAC or ETAC, and it does not expressly state that engineering technology programs are excluded.
Any information is gladly appreciated

Is it worth it to join the merchant marine with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology?
Im thinking about joining and pursuing an engineering career in the merchant marine. My bachelors qualifies me to test for my Third Assistant Engineer license after 180 days at sea, or 120 days if I work a 12 hour shift. I understand having the license does not guarantee me a job as a 3AE.
I like the idea of getting a month or months off at a time. And obviously the pay is attractive.
Is it worth it for me to join the merchant marine? Or would it make more sense for me to get a normal job on land?
Thinking about joining but worried my medical will get denied.
About three years ago I had a run in with anxiety that I took zoloft for. Around that same time I also had a fainting spell. I had OCD intrusive thoughts anxiety that were violent intrusive thoughts. Maybe a year after that I accidentally shot myself in the area of the body my OCD intrusive thoughts were, so that looks really bad on paper. Also have a medical history of chronic marijuana use, and asthma but the asthma was over twenty years ago. Googel AI says I have a 85-90 percent chance of being approved if I wait until Im done with my bachelors degree to join, because by that time all these issues will have been five years ago. Google AI says having been off zoloft for five years and not having any more incidents of self harm in five years proves it was accident, and proves Im fine now.
What does everyone here think my chances of getting approved for the medical are? Id really like to consider joining the merchant marine and I will have a bachelors degree in electrical and electronic engineering technology pretty soon so I think I could eventually land a job in the engine room.

Beretta PX4 Storm Compact Carry 2, or CZ75D PCR Compact. Which should I get for my new carry gun.
I narrowed it down to these two. Currently carry a hellcat and I want another carry gun thats a bit bigger than that. Not as a full replacement just as another option. Would you get the Beretta or the CZ?
Why is the Springfield Hellcat so hated on?
Carried one for years and shot in many times, never had any problems with it.
Any tips on getting started with designing my own PCB’s to solder?
Im pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology and I have been soldering for a few years now. Just got a new iron and I want to get into designing my own PCB’s and soldering them by hand.
Id like to know what software people are using to design their PCB’s, where they are getting components for them, and what kind of projects I could do that involve soldering in general. Im also interested in soldering projects that do not involve designing my own PCB. I just want to solder more, but I want it to be more purposeful than the random DIY soldering kits Ive been buying on Amazon.
I have soldered several DIY FM radios I got on amazon and they had quite a few parts. I also fixed the stick drift on one of my PS5 controllers by soldering new hall effect joystick modules to the PCB inside it. And a I soldered a few boards for this class I took at community college.
Fnirsi or Hakko for hobbyist soldering?
I do hobbyists soldering, like soldering new joysticks to my ps5 controller pcb, DIY soldering kits, and just general pcb repair of my electronics. I hear Hakko is the gold standard for soldering irons, but this fnirsi one looks really good too. I like the carrying case the fnirsi comes with, which may come in handy because I may need to transport it. Kind of off topic but I love my fnirsi oscilloscope and have grown to like the brand.
If you can tell Im leaning towards the fnirsi and I guess Im really asking for good reasons to choose hakko instead.
Which one should I get? The hakko is $140 the fnirsi is $113.
