Added a One Bit Filter in the game

Flash Warning - This might not be for everyone but I think it looks cool so adding this filter too.

There are gonna be different filters in the game and plan to add modding support too.

Altar added, this serves multiple purposes, can be shot to be charged for a blessing, or fed gems to upgrade weapon but loose the shrine

1800-HELL, A fast-paced arena survival FPS inspired by Devil Daggers, DOOM, Serious Sam and other boomer shooters

The game is built around a handcrafted 30-minute timeline, deterministic gameplay (every run can be perfectly replayed), and a single evolving weapon.

One mechanic I'm currently prototyping is the Ritual Altar.

Instead of your weapon upgrading automatically, you collect gems from defeated enemies and deposit them into an altar to evolve it.

The altar can also be charged by shooting it, temporarily creating a blessed area that slows enemies and gives you a tactical advantage.

Once you've upgraded, a new altar appears elsewhere, forcing you to keep moving rather than camp in one spot.

Added a replay system, with different camera modes, ghost mode and take control to continue from a point. Saved as Custom file that is small and shareable.

This 3 minute run was of 17.44 kb, which is shareable and replayable.

For a arena game, using VAT (vertex animated texture) i.e animations are baked into textures instead of using a skinned mesh with some custom culling that will use skinned mesh for LOD0, VAT for LOD1, and Imposter Mesh for LOD3, along with Jobs for movement of units

Footage is from editor with many debug options and gizmos switched on.

How VAT is baked

  • Texture Height is taken from Frame count. Texture width is taken from vertex count.
  • A Texture2D is made using TextureFormat.RGBAHalf. It stores 3D local coordinates (x, y, z) within the color channels (R, G, B)
  • Then Iterate through the frames
    • Sample and the deformed skinned mesh state into a temporary mesh
    • Read the deformed vertex coordinates from baked Mesh and write them to the texture

How Culling is done
Using the Culling API based on visibility and distance from camera various LODs are implemented

  • LOD 0: Close
    • Visuals: Full Skinned Mesh is active.
    • CPU State: The standard Unity Animator component is enabled for full skeletal fidelity.
    • Runtime: Centralized Job-based movement.
  • LOD 1: Medium
    • Visuals: VAT Mesh with an instanced shader material is active.
    • CPU State: The expensive skeletal Animator component is disabled, removing animator evaluation and bone-matrix skinning overhead entirely.
    • Synchronization: Material properties are synchronized to match the active animation state (e.g., swapping sheets from "Move" to "Attack").
  • LOD 2: Far
    • Visuals: A highly simplified Impostor Mesh is active.
  • LOD 3: Culled
    • Visuals: All visual models are disabled.
    • CPU State: Animator is disabled.

After dropping out, corporate side quests, escaping a business partnership, and watching a founding team scatter into different story arcs, I had a bunch of assets lying around. So, I'm making a game about a retired grandma beating up the mob after a mafia prince breaks her granddaughter's heart.

It's an early gameplay prototype inspired by PS1-era graphics, featuring PSX and VHS post-processing effects with adjustable intensity settings.

You play as a retired grandma whose granddaughter gets her heart broken by a mafia prince. Instead of sending a strongly worded message, Grandma decides to spend her weekend dismantling the Port Mafia.

Current gameplay includes:

  • Exploring warehouses, docks, offices, and hideouts
  • Hand-to-hand combat
  • Melee weapons
  • Third and first-person shooting
  • Room-based encounters and objectives

As the game progresses, Grandma gains access to some highly questionable experimental substances, unlocking bizarre power-ups that turn a simple revenge story into a bizarre adventure.

The goal isn't realism, it's an action game about a grandma teaching organized crime a lesson after they made her granddaughter cry.

Still very early, but it's been a fun way to turn a pile of abandoned assets into something ridiculous.

[Early Prototype] Grandma's breaking bones because the mafia prince broke her granddaughter's heart

Some gameplay footage, The Post processing can be tuned from menu, enabled or disables, with interlacing, refresh rate, crt effects and other PSX effects.

The combat is a mix of hand to hand, melee and weapons, slowly given to the the player over time.

With a bit of powerups in the later stages of the game
