I use since some years now a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro with Life-Size Converter for my macro shoots.

I’d like to explore a bit more naturalistic macro world and can’t decide in between EF 100mm f/2.8L and EF 180mm f/3.5L. Unfortunately I can’t rent them to try myself.

Although I do have some experience with handheld tele without IS (e.g. 200mm f/2.8L and 400mm f/5.6L) need some advice from people with direct experience about the macro on a crop sensor.

Running my macpro6,1 under Sequoia 15.7.7 via OCLP 2.4.1 without any issue.

Current config:
• E5-1620 v2 4-cores
• 64GB RAM
• D300
• 2TB OWC Aura Pro X2

I’m planning to upgrade it as follows:
• E5-2666 v2 8-cores
• 64GB RAM
• D700
• 2TB OWC Aura Pro X2

I’ve been told that with this CPU I’d get issues in stop/idle management, unless manually adding additional CpuFriend kexts.

Can anyone that went already through same upgrade confirm or deny such need? Have you experienced any challenge or issue linked to OCLP or how MacOS dialogues with the non-native CPU?

Recommended by Gemini, I entered into mental loop of upgrading the AirPort card in my 15” MacBook Pro mid-2009 C2D 2.8GHz, glossy screen.

Is it even possible through an adapter to install a relatively more modern AirPort card or did the AI just pulled my leg on an illusion?

Next weekend I’ll finally start the upgrade project for my macpro6,1:

• CPU: replace 4-cores with E5-2667 vs (8-cores)

• GPU: replace D300 with D700

I already upgraded RAM to 64GB and SSD to 1TB Aura Pro X2.

In preparation for the upgrade, I got MX-6 thermal paste for both CPU and GPUs. Then I found several sources recommending to also change thermal pads on VRAM/VRM of D700 cards. However, I found no mention in any guide (iFixit, …) or tutorial about thermal pads.

Shall I get some available and, if yes, which thickness? Also about the latter I found contradictory info about 1mm everywhere, a mix of 1mm and 1.2mm, or even a 2mm.

Need someone that already went through this upgrade project or at least that re-pasted GPUs to help me figure out what’s needed. I’d like to get everything available before starting to disassemble, as I simply can’t leave the Mac stripped down until I get something I’d order last minute.
