One question we hear a lot from travelers planning a Rwanda trip is: "Can I stay in Kigali and still trek gorillas in Uganda?"

The answer is yes, and for some travelers it actually works out really well.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is surprisingly accessible from Kigali — often more so than flying into Uganda directly. Depending on which border crossing and Bwindi sector you're headed to, the whole thing can be set up as a private road trip starting right from Kigali.

Why people consider this route?

Gorilla permits are cheaper in Uganda than in Rwanda, and a private transfer from Kigali keeps the logistics fairly simple. Bwindi also has its own character as a trekking environment, quite different from Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. For travelers trying to keep overall costs down while still having the gorilla experience, it's a genuinely appealing option.

What a typical trip looks like?

A short version of this trip usually runs something like:

- Day 1: Kigali → Uganda border → Bwindi

- Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi

- Day 3: Bwindi → back to Kigali

You can also extend it — pairing the gorilla trek with Lake Bunyonyi, golden monkey trekking, chimp trekking, or a longer Uganda safari if you have more time.

So, Rwanda or Uganda?

This is really the interesting part. If you're already based in Kigali, Rwanda is usually the easier option logistically. Uganda, on the other hand, tends to be more budget-friendly on permits and offers a different kind of trekking experience.

Honestly, there's no universal right answer — it comes down to your budget, how much time you have, which trekking sector appeals to you, and what else is on your itinerary.

You'll be up before the sun — most lodges have you awake by 5 or 6am with a quick breakfast before heading to park headquarters. It's an early start.

By 7 or 7:30, you're sitting in on the morning briefing. Rangers split everyone into small groups of up to eight, and each group gets assigned to a specific gorilla family that's been tracked overnight.

There's a short talk on the ground rules — stay at least 7 meters back, no flash photography, and what to do if a curious gorilla wanders closer than expected (it happens more than you'd think).

Then the trek begins, and honestly, this is the part nobody can predict. Sometimes the gorillas are close and you're there within half an hour. Other days they've moved deep into the forest and you're hiking for four, five, even six hours through steep, muddy terrain. We always tell clients: hire a porter. It's a small cost, it makes the climb dramatically easier, and the money goes straight into the local community.

And then — you find them. However long the hike took, the moment you see that first flash of black fur in the undergrowth, it tends to wipe out all the exhaustion. You get exactly one hour with the family. That's the park rule, non-negotiable, but it's a full, rich hour — watching a silverback move with that quiet authority, youngsters tumbling around playing, mothers grooming infants. Most people say it goes by faster than any hour of their life.

After that, it's the hike back out (sometimes just as long as the way in), Most lodges keep the rest of the day easy on purpose — you'll want it.

If you have Gorilla tracking on your bucketlist, how do dream of it? For those who have been on this once in a lifetime experience, what impressed you on tracking day?

Today’s guest started the morning feeling very confident.

“I’m pretty fit. How hard can it be?”

Fast-forward a few hours… 😂

Mud on the shoes. Sweat everywhere. Legs questioning every decision that led to this mountain.

At one point, our guest looked at the guide and asked:

“Are we nearly there?”

The guide smiled: “Yes.”

That “yes” turned out to be… optimistic. 😂

Then the trackers suddenly stopped.

“The gorillas are here.”

And just like that, nobody cared about the hike anymore.

A beautiful silverback was sitting nearby, completely relaxed, looking at our group as if he was wondering why we had made such a big effort just to come and see him. 😂

Our guest went from:

“I don't think my legs can do this.”

to:

“THIS IS AMAZING!” 🦍❤️

By the end of the trek, the exhaustion was forgotten.

The best part? On the way back, our guest said:

“Honestly… I’d climb that mountain again tomorrow.”

That’s usually how gorilla trekking gets you. 😂

For those who have trekked before—what was your funniest moment on the mountain?

Planning your first gorilla trek? One of the most common questions we hear at Lux Gorilla Safaris is: “What should I do to prepare?”

Here are a few practical tips that can make your experience much more enjoyable.

🥾 1. Prepare for a real hike

Gorilla trekking is not simply a wildlife viewing experience. In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Bwindi/Mgahinga forests, terrain can be steep, muddy, wet and challenging. Uganda Wildlife Authority says treks can last roughly 2–7 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family.

Start preparing several weeks beforehand with regular walking, hiking or cardio.

👕 2. Wear the right clothing

Bring:

Sturdy hiking boots

Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt

Lightweight waterproof jacket

Gaiters

Gardening/leather gloves

Hat

Small daypack

Rwanda Tourism specifically recommends sturdy clothing, solid walking shoes, gloves, gaiters and waterproof clothing because of the thick vegetation and stinging nettles.

💧 3. Carry enough water and snacks

A reusable water bottle, some energy snacks and basic personal essentials can make a long trek much easier.

📷 4. Protect your camera and phone

The forest can be wet and muddy, so bring waterproof protection for cameras, phones and other electronics.

🧑‍🌾 5. Consider hiring a porter

A porter can carry your backpack and assist you on difficult sections of the trail. More importantly, hiring local porters helps put tourism income directly into surrounding communities.

🦍 6. Respect the gorillas

Listen carefully to your ranger and follow all park rules. The gorillas are wild animals, and responsible tourism helps protect both the animals and their habitat.

Gorilla permits are limited. Rwanda currently recommends booking in advance, while Uganda has specific permit-purchasing rules administered throu

gh Uganda Wildlife Authority and licensed operators.
