Great preamp/DI

Several years back when I was still working I purchased some bass gear for my golden years. Nothing too extravagant, MIM Fender Mustang (thin RS 77 flats) & Jazz Bass (std RS nickel 66 RW) & originally thought I’d use a pedal preamp/DI into a computer DAW & figured I’d be assembling a pedalboard. Then I came across this gem (head, not the cabinet.) While not exactly pedalboard friendly, this compact little powerhouse features 2 XLR DI’s. The 1st can be switched pre/post is 3-band eq & the 2nd follows the 6V6 class A/B power section/output transformer. Oh, it also has a built-in dummy load so can be used with or without a speaker cabinet (load.) Need more oomph for a gig? Pairs beautifully with any FRFR powered speakers/FoH.

Now this amp by itself yields a creamy, warm tube sound that approaches break-up and has tons of natural compression, the only thing really needed is an Xotic EP Boost (set w/ mid bump) & this thing has a beautiful bloom that’s out of this world. I’ve never really believed in relying heavily on pedals and honestly with this rig little else is needed

Bass Compressor

I’ve been doing a lot of research regarding bass compressors. Initially three caught my eye, OE Cali76 Bass, Darkglass Hyper Luminal, and Empress Bass. I quickly eliminated the Darkglass option and was most impressed by OE for its sidechain HPF & FET color then I find the Empress with color+boost switch pretty much does the same. Research complete or so I thought. Along comes a dark horse into my field of view, SA Atlas, totally digital but seems to easily nail the “Cali” color, super clean compression like the Empress and LA-2A style optical and some semi-parametric eq with 6 on-board presets, well sign me up. The only thing holding me back (besides money) is that it’s digital, not analog however with other analog pedals in the chain (MXR cs Script Phase 90, Laney Blackheath, EHX Bass Clone will that really matter? Brain over stimulated… talk to me fellow bass pedal nuts

New strings

Finally got around to restringing my short scale. It’s had standard gauge round wounds since purchase and I would just compensate. Switched to RotoSound RS77S 40-90 Monel alloy flat wounds. Wow! Now this thing really thumps!

Finally getting setup

Well finally getting around to setting up gear for my home digital/analog hybrid recording studio. Dug this stuff from hiding so off to a good start. Should have everything else in place within a couple of days then playtime.

Harmonica people

Especially old-time harmonica people… I’ve a drawer full of NOS German Marine Band, Blues Harp & Golden Melody harmonicas (of course none are in key of C) Anyway I’ve yet to learn to play but I’m retired now, have my own little backwoods home studio with bass, virtual keys, acoustic guitar (and a Les Paul I don’t really play) and enough analog & digital stuff for a decent budget hybrid recording setup. Oh, and I got a bunch of nice vintage mics… as well as this one (see pictures) which I have found zero information on. Looking at it I thought it might make a decent harp mic so hopefully someone out there in internet land might shed some light

I’ve 2 basses, both stock and purchased new and while I’m happy with the sound of both overall I find my Mustang Player II w/ PJ pickups more aggressive (and the pickups have larger pole pieces) than my Jazz Player II (with smaller poles) which I tend to like more. Is difference the pickups, scale length, or fingerboard (pau ferro vs rosewood?)
