hey y’all,

two years ago, my 2013 4003 was stolen out of my truck in austin, texas after a gig. i got home crazy late from the gig, was exhausted, and figured i’d be safe for a night. i was very wrong. i filed a police report, but obviously nothing came of that. it was one of the most devastating moments of my life. i worked my ass off to buy that bass, my first professional grade instrument, and i must have played 100 gigs with it. i’m not really in a financial position to buy it back at the moment, but i am hoping to at least track it down so that, someday when the current owner wants to sell, i can put in an offer. between the color, the wear pattern, and my modifications, it’s pretty distinctive. i have the serial number and police report on file. i know it’s a long shot, but does anyone here happen to recognize this bass? thanks in advance.

notes:

-it’s got a significant number of small dings. the most unique is one on the bass side waist contour.

-i swapped the white plastics out for black, as seen in the photo

-it is a 2013 model. if someone has a possible hit i’m happy to supply the serial number in DMs. the output jack cover will have a 13 printed separately from the rest of the serial number

-it was in a rickenbacker hard case with a black leather strap, a few cables, and caster wheels from my cabinet. i do not expect that any of those items stayed with the instrument, but who knows

-it hasn’t popped up anywhere on the internet since (i regularly check guitar center, fb marketplace, reverb, google images, etc), so i expect it wound up in a sketchy pawn shop somewhere. police report was filed same day, but for some reason they refused to use my serial number. they said it was incomplete, which makes no sense to me.

These were only made by Ken Parker from October 2002 through March 2003.

My name is Chuck Savage. I've been playing bass since 1976 — upright and electric. Played in bands across Texas for forty years. The Missiles, Jesse Dayton, the Supersuckers, Walking Time Bombs. But the gig people know me for is Mitch Hedberg.

I was his bass player from 1999 to 2005. If you've ever listened to Strategic Grill Locations, I'm the upright bass you hear behind the jokes.

Here's the thing nobody knows about that recording. I showed up to the Laff Stop in Houston for sound check that night. Unzipped my case. The neck was completely broken off.

I panicked. Ran to a pawn shop next to Rockefellers, rented a bass from the owner for fifty bucks. No case. I laid it on a piece of cardboard in the back of a pickup truck and hauled it across town.

That bass was a gut string — nylon. I had only ever played metal string upright. So not only was I playing someone else's instrument on the recording, I was playing nylon strings for the first time in my life.

That's the bass you hear on the album.

I figured out early on to play quiet under the setup and hit hard on the punchline. Give the audience something to ride. Mitch never told me to do that. It just became what we did.

I just published a book about the whole story — the parking lot where we met, the six years on the road, and the night we made that record. It's called Just Bring the Bass Up There — It'll Be Cool.

Hi there,

I’m making a board for my bassist since he’s not into pedals and I’m too much into it.

Thoses pedals are actually pedals I got for a cheap price, so it’s not necessarily the best one in their category. Most of them are here because I got them on a pack of pedals and decided to keep them for him instead of selling them.

I might add a LMB-3 soon (maybe instead of the steel Leather ?)

Any advice would be welcome, especially about what is specific with a bass.

Just had this beast dropped off and I already love it. It's in quite good shape given its age, and apparently spent much of its life in the (original) case. And as a fun bonus it's from my birth year - hence the holy grail title.

Continuing my quest to conquer five strings(only my second ever), and I've had my eye on the Iron Label SRMS for a while now. My heart dropped when it first arrived though; it looked like FedEx played Kick the Baby with the box. Upon opening it, the volume knob was completely off and rattling around inside of the box, the treble knob was almost off, and the neck had a ridiculous amount of back bow that choked off all of the strings. Replaced and tightened the knobs, gave the truss rod almost a full turn, plugged it in and checked all of the controls. Everything is good to go now.

Planning on a set of Nordstrand Zen Blades for it like my other two SRMSs, and the Midrange Monster Custom preamp(Darkglass Tone Capsule clone with switchable low and high mid frequencies). Lūm dislike BH2s as much as I do.
