Discord Community

Hi everyone,
I’ve set up a Discord server for electricians, apprentices, and anyone interested in the trade to chat, share ideas, ask questions and discuss issues. We ensure advice being given is accurate, rather than relying on “DIY Dave” fixes and guesswork.

We’re also introducing verified roles for electricians and apprentices, so members can see who’s provided proof of their trade background.

It’s still early days, so feel free to come along and help build the community.

Looking for a compact impact driver - stick with Ryobi or switch?

I've always used Ryobi tools as they've fit my budget and generally been decent value.

I'm looking for a very compact impact driver, preferably Ryobi so I can keep using my existing batteries. That said, I'd be open to switching brands if there's a better option for the money.

My Ryobi circular saw isn't great, and while my combi drill is okay, the bits keep falling out and it's starting to annoy me.

Can anyone recommend a compact impact driver that's good value? Not really looking at DeWalt or Makita prices, but happy to hear about other brands people rate.

Why am I pulling from the grid when I’m generating more than I’m using?

Looking at a PHEV After Getting Solar – Worth It?

I’ve recently had 9 solar panels (4.05kWp) and a 5.76kWh battery installed and I’m still learning how to get the most out of the system. At the moment I don’t have an EV, but I’m considering a plug-in hybrid in the future as I’d prefer having a petrol backup rather than going fully electric.

For those with solar and a battery, do you find charging a PHEV from solar actually saves a worthwhile amount of money? Has it changed how you use your system, and if you had the choice again would you still go for a PHEV, a full EV, or just stick with petrol? Interested to hear some real-world experiences and whether the savings have been worth it.

New to Solar and Batteries – What Tariff Should I Be On?

I’ve recently had 9 solar panels and a 5.76kWh FoxESS battery installed and I’m currently on a standard tariff. I’ve signed up for Octopus Outgoing for exports, but I’m wondering whether it’s worth moving to Agile or another smart tariff. Do people find it’s worth letting Octopus control the battery, and how much do you actually save compared to a normal tariff? I’m also considering a plug-in hybrid in the future as I’d prefer having a petrol backup rather than going fully electric. Interested to hear what others with similar setups are doing.

The side of my shed which is up against the concrete is rotting. How do I fix this?

Looking for a bit of bike advice as I’m struggling to decide what type of bike I actually need. I was originally recommended the Calibre T2 and went to have a look at one, but it honestly felt a bit too overkill/bulky for the kind of riding I’ll realistically be doing.

I really like the style of the Pinnacle Photon and similar bikes, but I’d ideally want front suspension for comfort and for the occasional rougher trail. Most of my riding will be paths, tracks, gravel and general rides on my own, with only the odd bit of mountain biking now and then.

Budget is around £500–£900. Basically looking for something between a hybrid and a proper mountain bike. Any recommendations?
