Lifetime ownership costs by category, mile, year, and maintenance/repairs since purchase w/costs and mileage.

Purchased September, 2020 at ~66,000 miles, no major unexpected repairs aside from replacing dry-rotted sway arm joint boots, and recently got error code to replace the hybrid battery at ~173,000 miles, but haven't done so yet.

2024 onward, we both increased our insurance coverage and moved to an area with higher base insurance rates. Was really surprised to find that insurance has been about 1/3 of the total costs of this car.

I didn't include the Yakima roof rack nor my newest bike rack (1Up) in the totals because I bucketed those with hobby costs. Initial bike rack was included because the cost was forced after going from an old truck to the Prius, but I guess that could be true for the newer ones too.

Geico Coverage limits (cost/6 months = $1,313.48) with no penalty for driving history + 20+year length of policy discount:

  • Bodily injury - $100k/$300k ($373.89)
  • Liability property damage - $100k ($271.01)
  • Uninsured motorist bodily injury - $100k/$300k ($339.19)
  • Uninsured motorist property damage - $100k, $250 deductible ($52.21)
  • Comprehensive $250 deductible ($56.78)
  • Collision $500 deductible ($188.11)
  • Rental reimbursement - $35/day, $1,050 max ($32.29)

Estimate to replace hybrid battery from local dealer -$3,600, cost to replace it myself w/ OEM battery purchased at different dealer after core charge returned ~$2,400. Still contemplating what to do.

Also need new tires. Happy to take any questions or discuss anything.

Need help! - 2015 C Three, 173k miles - P0A80 code - Buy new OEM battery from dealer for $2,604 or how to find used/totaled/junkyard OEM battery?

Cannot seem to clear my thoughts enough to make a decision. I plan on keeping this car, bought @ 77k miles, no other major problems, just put tint, roof rack, and bike rack on the car.

2 months later, hybrid battery needs replacing per code.

Spent so far: $240 diagnostic at Toyota Dealer Service Center. Can buy new OEM battery for $2,604 after $1,350 core charge is returned ($4,35 up front). After watching YT videos on how to swap out the battery, I'm confident I can do it. Dealer initially quoted $4,040 for them to swap w/labor, then went down to $3,600 for them to install w/labor.

Parts guy told me 12 month unlimited warranty if I install, 3 years 36,000 miles if Toyota Service Center installs.

Decision fatigued and need help/guidance, please.

u/PhilMeUpBaby, if you see this post, I don't think have it in me to test and swap out individual modules, although I wish I had the time and focus to do so. Thank you for your previous comments.

P0A80 - Replace Hybrid Battery

Got the dreaded P0A80 on my 2015 C Three at 172k miles. Local Toyota dealer is quoting $4,040 to replace it. Having been a member of this distinguished sub for several years now, I have seen posts from those of you brave enough to replace the hybrid battery yourselves.

Any recommended brands beyond OEM? If not, how do I purchase an OEM battery? Some hybrid shops advertise their batteries as "OEM new battery, new modules"?

I have never used the Dr. Prius app. I've seen you can run it on your car to see and reset error codes, but my car is in the shop right now waiting for my decision on whether to proceed with hybrid battery replacement. The car is driveable but the dealer service center has given me very little information on the error code or what the root cause is.

In the meantime, I have access to a friend's car for ~3.5 more weeks. I'm capable of removing and replacing the battery in my garage from the videos I have seen on YouTube.

I just put $500 worth of tint on this car a month ago, so I figure I should go ahead with replacing the battery and maybe even replacing the head unit with an android auto capable one. And hell, I may go crazy and install sound proofing materials. If you have head unit recommendations that work with the back up camera, I'd love to hear those as well.

As far as the battery goes, I am asking for general guidance or battery recommendation, and tips or other things to look out for. Please share your insight!
