Getting a 5.0L pulled and overhauled. What else would you fix?

My '94 F150 with the 5.0L has around 170k miles, and leaks oil from all over the place. Besides that it mostly runs fine.

I need to get the leaks fixed, and I am looking into having a mechanic pull the engine and replace all of the gaskets, hoses, vacuum tubes, spark plugs & wires, and the oil pan.

While the engine is pulled and there is easy access, what other parts would you recommend replacing that typically start going out at 170k+ miles?

Should I be considering a rebuilt engine, or is an overhaul like this a good enough option? I've heard that rebuilt engines "aren't built like they used to" and the original factory engines are pretty darn dependable.

The mechanic I'm talking to for a quote knows these trucks inside and out and he did a similar job for someone else who referred me to them. Theirs turned out really nice, and it doesn't leak a drop.

Interested to hear about your experiences with overhauls vs rebuilt engines. Thanks!

PSA: IRCC surrender letters are not revocations

Words matter with this stressful turn of events, so in the spirit of avoiding misinformation and panic, please don't refer to the recent IRCC surrender letters as revocations. The letters describe an administrative review process and while details of that process are not yet clear I am confident that this community will band together and get through this new hurdle.

Edit to add a quote directly from the letter: "I (as the Minister's authorized delegate) will be conducting a thorough review to determine if the certificate of citizenship referenced above should be cancelled as per subsection..."

Sub milestone - 7,000 members!

Before this sub re-opened for business about 2 months ago, it had 5,000 members and all posting was blocked. We hit 7,000 members this week, and I've personally enjoyed all of the shares and discussions. I still haven't fixed my speedo and odometer yet, but I have enough information to keep working on it thanks to y'all.

Thanks for being here, and keep those "share your ride" posts coming!

Announcement: Wiki Reorganization

You may have noticed that the wiki was recently reorganized. The main wiki topics and sub-topics are now roughly ordered by the citizenship by descent process steps, and organized into a Table of Contents landing page. The sub-topics have their own smaller pages for the FAQ entries.

The change was quietly rolled out by updating the sidebar links and sticky comment links. If you see any old links please let us know and we'll get them fixed.

The new format makes it easier to find the information you are looking for, and easier to share direct FAQ answer links with fellow community members.

Wiki Update Posts

We plan to highlight new and changed wiki content with posts going forward. We had great responses from the recent Quebec genealogy wiki update post and we want to try doing more of that to spread awareness of wiki updates, and to gather community feedback to incorporate into the wiki.

Acknowledgements

Finally, a huge thank you to the original wiki authors who poured their experience and hearts into the content, especially u/IWantOffStopTheEarth. And to the shared experience of the community that informed the wiki.

Using a 2 post lift with running boards on a 1994 F-150 Supercab shortbed

I ran into a problem getting my 1994 F-150 onto a 2 post lift at a local rent-a-bay shop. With 2 spacers on the arms the rear arms couldn't reach the frame because the running boards are in the way.

The shop wouldn't go up to a 3rd spacer because it's unstable.

Has anyone with running boards run into this before?

I stripped off old paint from a hand railing made from galvanized pipe. I used a 4.5" grinder with a wire wheel to strip it to bare metal.

Cleaned it with mineral spirits a couple times, sanded it, then cleaned one more time.

The finish went on pretty well. It got 24 hours of drying time, then it rained. After the rain, the finish became splotchy.

I plan to finish it with a non-alkyd automotive epoxy paint rattle can.

What's going on with the splotchy-ness? How should I prep the cold galvanized coating to accept the epoxy paint? It's been 3 days since the galvanized coating went on and I have a couple of sunny days coming up.

TIA!
