[Japan] Aiming for Ritsumeikan APU’s 100% Tuition Reduction with a 688 GED score & IELTS. How realistic is it?

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student looking to apply to Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Japan. My goal is to secure their 100% Tuition Reduction Scholarship since my budget is heavily limited.

I know APU accepts non-traditional high school pathways, but I want to know how competitive my profile is specifically for the maximum 100% bracket.

My Profile:

• Education: Completed my GED with a total score of 688 (averaging ~172 per section, placing me in the College Ready + Credit band).

• Language: Upper-intermediate English, currently preparing for the IELTS (targeting a 7.0+).

• Target: English-medium undergraduate program at APU.

For anyone who has successfully gotten into APU with a GED, or those who received the 80% or 100% tuition reduction:

  1. How much weight does the GED score hold? Does a high score (688) stack up well against applicants submitting traditional national curriculum transcripts or A-Levels?

  2. What specific elements of the application should I over-index on? Since APU evaluates the online application holistically (essays, recommendation letters, and the recorded video interview), what strategies did you use in your statement of purpose to stand out as a GED student?

  3. Did you pair your GED with an SAT/ACT score? Did adding a standardized test score give you a safer edge for the 100% tuition tier, or were strong GED scores + IELTS enough?

I am ready to put maximum effort into my essays and interview preparation, but I would love to hear from anyone who has successfully navigated Japan’s international admissions via the GED route.

Thanks!

International student with a 688 GED score & preparing for IELTS. Are 100% full-ride scholarships realistic, and where?

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student looking for realistic guidance on securing a 100% undergraduate scholarship (full-tuition or full-ride).

My profile:

• Education: Passed the GED with a total score of 688 (averaging ~172 per section, College Ready + Credit tier).

• English: Upper-intermediate level, currently preparing for the IELTS.

• Financial Need: Looking for up to 100% funding due to a very limited budget.

I know full rides for international students are highly competitive, and having a GED adds an extra layer of complexity. Most standard advice points to US community colleges, but they rarely offer 100% funding for internationals.

If you have been in my shoes or understand international admissions, I'd love your insight:

• Which countries or universities are genuinely friendly to high-scoring GED international students for full scholarships? (e.g., Europe, Asia government scholarships, or specific US/Global universities?)

• Did you need an SAT score alongside your GED to unlock 100% institutional merit aid?

• Are there specific strategies you used to stand out as a GED applicant?

I am fully willing to put in the work and take extra standardized tests if needed. I just want to know where to focus my energy. Thanks!

I feel my scholarship dream is slipping away

I'm a GED student.I was counting on getting a high score in Science and Math to improve my chances of earning a scholarship, since I wasn't expecting much from RLA and Social Studies. But after scoring only 159 in Science, I feel like my scholarship dream has slipped much farther away eventhought I got 183in Maths.
