The Rogue Element - Update #1

The Rogue Element - Update #1

In my previous post I showed a few pics of my new, rusty Element. I've made some progress I thought I'd share. Join me as we bring this toaster back to life!

I got the interior fully stripped out:

https://preview.redd.it/euxw39jdy5kh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5eefac7b885e684140dc772ab0bb7e7a76d8e8d0

Most of the white padding underneath the rubber floor mats was either badly stained or still damp, so I'm going to have to replace all of that. Pulling out all the flooring helped me locate a few more small areas of surface rust. Nothing too bad, though.

You can see in the wheel well a few spots. Nothing some OSPHO can't handle.

Here's a view from the other side after a thin coat of OSPHO, 24 hours dry time, and some Rustoleum Rust Stop Primer. (I'd prefer some Epoxy Primer, but I have none on hand at the moment.)

https://preview.redd.it/bmfdfs31z5kh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d320b961b9f2f42136f6b87068be2457fcf7479

With the floor mats out, I got my drill and scrub-brush attachment and some various cleaning solutions and got to scrubbing. This...wasn't that successful. I got the easy stuff off, but these are well stained. I tried Simple Green, some Vinegar and Water mix, and a few other household cleaners, but nothing got out the stains. Any suggestions?

I also pulled out the center console bracket - it was pretty rusty, so it got a full treatment and some primer for now:

Now on to the rust holes! Now, I am very much an amateur welder. It's been 6 years since I have welded, and I wasn't that great back then. Plus, welding thin sheet metal is HARD.

Anyway, I decided to start on the driver's side floorboards, since there are only two small holes to deal with. The smallest is a quarter-sized hole by the side door here:

https://preview.redd.it/1n47rb0i06kh1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2dbb313a6fa6ecee4d6ca224b5c8903edd4c2f7d

I started with a paper template:

https://preview.redd.it/flt51lfn06kh1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4972899d92b9e3617014b50279152edbef0dd369

...transferred that to some thin steel, and fiddled with it for a hour or so to get it just the right size.

https://preview.redd.it/4newa89s06kh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf770acc01276afa0ee5d87476470b4974b650ab

And then tried welding it up. I blew like a dozen holes in it - it was super frustrating.

https://preview.redd.it/sh8tptux06kh1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f13549d37ce0faf471a55a184d69c89ecb5bdf92

After getting frustrated and re-checking all of my welder settings and leaving it overnight to think about, I tried again and did finally get some decent penetration without blowing through too much.

Yes, these are ugly welds, but this will all be covered, so I'm just going to keep rolling.

https://preview.redd.it/73qf8t7i16kh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e35ffd1f06d23bd42391ee97c8bfe1bae5992962

I dressed the welds a bit more, then primed it and moved on to the spot on the front floorboard. I made a paper template, cut it out of steel, and fitzed around with it until it was close enough to fitting.

https://preview.redd.it/8z8gd7nu16kh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7377a017b31e8cc510ac55bec811ad8801d81fd6

Some more really ugly welds later:

https://preview.redd.it/2vo30lxy16kh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c24a5c9b8cefedbbb528a510f0945b7e1360f7fd

This is where I thought I was going to stop for the night, hence the picture. But I knew I'd have to put everything away and then pull out all my tools again the next day, so I changed my mind and kept going. I filled in all of those holes, and dressed and primed it. So now at least the driver's side floorboard is done! (I was so tired I forgot to take a picture of the finished product.)

I'll crawl under and work on the one spot on the frame that's rusted out later this week. It's coming along!

The passenger side is the bigger issue. There's a pretty decent hole in the floor, the whole side of the crossmember that the seat mounts to, and the lower section of the rocker panel to be replaced. I'll build my skills with the small stuff and work up to that.

I hope that this post will inspire folks. Even a chump like me with no money to throw at this can do these types of repairs. It's certainly not show car worthy, but if I can get one of these cars back on the road for a few more good years, I'll be happy!

EDIT: I forgot to explain the title. I've decided to call this Element "The Rogue Element". This is the concept image I created to show my goal:

https://preview.redd.it/5c5p8xtx36kh1.png?width=1195&format=png&auto=webp&s=57d2a6093024c78392c257609839ba7698569242

I learned back in art class that a good concept is to have two main colors (green and grey), but then to have a third, complementing accent color used sparingly. That will be the yellow. The stripe, and yellow H emblem, and the yellow fog lights is just enough to kick it up a notch. I liked the color scheme, and it reminded me of Rogue from the X-Men. The green and yellow were colors she wore a lot. (I read a lot of comic books as a teenager.)

You guys are going to think I'm CRAZY

I just bought a cheap Element, and it has rust holes in the floorboards.

I know that sounds stupid, and most folks generally advise against getting a rusty Element, but hear me out.

I just finished an '04 Manual Element for my daughter to drive. After refurbishing the entire suspension and doing a ton of cleaning and minor fixes and upgrades, I wanted to pick up one for myself. I've been scouring FB Marketplace and Craigslist for a Manual AWD Element in either Orange or Green. I finally found an '04 a few hours away from me at a nature preserve/research center. They had two Elements that they had used to shuttle visitors and scientists around the property, but both were in disrepair and hadn't been driven in a few years. They wanted them gone, so I got the green one for $600, and they have since offered me the silver 2007 Automatic AWD for $300. They really want them off their property, so I'm going to bring that one home as well!

The green '04 has 204k miles, and the silver '07 has 150k miles.

Anyway, I got the green one home and the passenger side rear door wouldn't latch at the top, so it had been partially open and sitting out in the weather for at least two years. The door was rusted stuck and wouldn't open, and I could tell the lower rocker panel was rusted out underneath it. It turned out to be a stuck cable, which I fixed, and managed to get the door opened. The door itself is actually fine. A tiny bit of surface rust that cleaned up nicely, and the door works fine now.

But when I pulled out the interior, I found that floorboard was quite rusty. The insulation under the rubber flooring had been holding a ton of water, and it rusted through the floorboard in several places, and there is one small section of the box frame just underneath that is rusted out as well.

I'm not scared of the rust, I used to work on old American cars, and have done enough welding in patch panels to be dangerous, so I'm going for it. All of the rusted areas are basically flat panels, so making patch panels will be pretty straightforward. I do also have a small metal bender and an bead roller.

The car did spend the first part of its life in Chicago, so the undercarriage does have some other surface rust in various areas, but the rear suspension mounts are super clean. The frame (other than one small area) is also very clean. The rust damage was mainly from that one door being stuck, so it's limited in scope to a point that I think I can manage it.

Even the body is in great shape. It does have a few small dings that I'm going to try smoothing out, and the front left fender is pushed in a bit. If I can't find a nice green fender somewhere, I'll try repairing that as well.

The engine does run, and under the valve cover looks really good. I have an issue with the starting system, and had to run a jumper wire to the starter to get it to start, but it purrs along nicely and moves under its own power. Once I get the rust taken care of, it's going to get a long list of repairs and upgrades done. After a massive cleaning, of course!

I don't think I'll find another Manual AWD Element around here anytime soon. And I couldn't say no to the price! If the '07 runs and drives well when I get it, I'll probably clean it up and drive that while I work on this '04. I'll also be documenting this here and on YouTube.

Wish me luck and/or tell me how crazy I am to take on this project...

Did I cook my turbo?

I have a 2013 R60 Countryman S with 100,000 miles on it. It’s well taken care of, but I just recently fixed an oil leak (turbo drain line) and did a full oil change.

In the mornings the past few days, the car would have a whine from the engine bay, but I couldn’t figure out where it came from. It went away as soon as I wasn’t idling, so I thought it might be a pulley starting to go bad.

Last night, as I turned on to my street, I got an oil warning light for about half a second, and the check engine light came on. I let it cool down and checked the oil, it was about a quart and a half low.

After refilling it and letting it sit a bit, I started it up and cleared the CEL, the only code that remains is a VANOS code.

I’m afraid the whine may be the turbo starving of oil? I won’t be home to look at it until later tonight, but does it sound like I have killed the turbo?

I started looking at rock auto for prices, and they range from $500 to $1200 for a replacement.

Just got a cheap Element, but can't get it to turn over

I bought a non-starting '04 Manual AWD Element this week for $600. It was quite a steal, and I'll do a full post on it when I take some pics. It's been sitting for at least two years, likely was parked because it wouldn't start. I removed the old starter and it was definitely bad, but even with a new starter, nothing happens when I turn the key.

It's a brand new (bigger) battery. The ground cable looks a little old, but seems like a good connection, and I would suspect the starter at least to make a little noise if it was just a weak ground.

There is a faint click under the hood where the fusebox is, but I've checked out all the fuses and they seem intact. The 50amp fuse for the ignition circuit looks good.

I did try pulling the relay from under the dash, but I couldn't physically remove it. I will take a closer look at that tomorrow.

I'm not sure what to check next, any advice?

Anyone tried Odyssey seats in their Element?

I have owned several Odysseys and several Elements, and I think my back definitely prefers the nicer Odyssey seats for long trips.

I'm picking up an '04 next week I will be using as my "adventure vehicle", and plan to do some traveling in it. While I may eventually consider the Hiro's swivel mod, I think mainly I just want to look into a more comfortable seat. There are a lot of Hondas in my local junkyard, so I'll be heading there next weekend to do some scavenging, but has anyone ever swapped seats for a more comfy leather seat, say those out of an Odyssey? I'll go look at the CRV's as well and do some measuring.

I've seen folks swap to Civic SI seats, but that's all I've been able to find so far. Any good suggestions?

Took my Element camping for the first time!

Completely “no-build” setup:

I slept on a fold out camping cot with a 3 inch memory foam bed topper, and it was super comfy.

My dog slept at my feet all night.

My daughter was originally going to attach one end of her hammock to the Element’s roof rack and the other side to a tree, but this camping area was devastated my a hurricane a few years ago and our site didn’t have a tree close enough. She ended up laying down the front and rear seat and sleeping on those with two camping mats. She was less comfortable, I think.

I bought some screens with zippers and a bunch of really strong magnets, and screened in the back hatch area and one side. That allowed us to keep the hatch and doors open all night.

This camping area had power, so we ran a box fan on the tailgate and that kept us nice and cool. (This is Florida in the summer, not usually comfortable enough to camp).

I did add a tarp on top just in case it rained, but we didn’t actually need that this time.

I also added a 10 by 10 popup just for some extra shade and bungied the legs of that to the wheels, which kept it in place nicely.

Overall, a fun experience for us and the dog. Will definitely do it again, and have plans to build out a bed system inspired by a bunch of you folks!

How easy is a manual swap?

If you have an auto Element and want to swap in a manual, is that a straightforward process?

Is it more difficult for an AWD model, or are there different year configurations to worry about?

I’m on the lookout for an AWD and would prefer a manual, but I’ve seen several automatics that are otherwise perfect. If I found a parts car with a manual, I’m just considering how much work it would be. I’m pretty handy and have swapped engines and transmissions in other cars in the past, but surely this has been done before by someone?

I wonder if I found an AWD manual parts car, had the 6th gear conversion done to it, then swapped it into an AWD auto if that would even be possible.

“ELEANOR” car badge

This may be considered sacrilegious by some, but here you go.

We just picked up a Honda Element for my 16 year old daughter and I’ve spent the last few weeks fixing all the problems and doing all of the maintenance the previous owner probably ignored.

My daughter decided to name her “Eleanor”, and despite my repeated pleas to choose a name not already assigned to a famous Mustang, she held fast.

The ELEMENT badge on the rear had long fallen off, so I found the closest font I could and made her this custom 3D printed version. It’s ABS, and primed and painted with automotive paint, so hopefully it will last.

My daughter's "new" Element! (And a question)

My wife and I bought a brand new Element back in '05, and we loved that car! We traded it in for a minivan when our second child was born 16 years ago, and I've always wanted another Element. Now that same daughter is 16 and needs a car, so I just picked up this '04 LX 5 speed for cheap and did a bunch of work to it to get it on the road. It's got 187,000 miles on it, and needed a lot of parts replaced. Plus, it was FILTHY. The previous owners used it to haul dogs and potted plants.

Here's what I've done so far:

New shocks/struts on all 4 corners

New CV axles

Tie rod ends

Ball joints

Brake pads

Flushed and filled with all new fluids (oil, transmission, power steering, brake fluid)

Power steering pump o-rings

New plugs and coils

Air and cabin filters

New wipers

Refurbished headlights

Patched front seat

Added a Carplay unit with front and rear dash cams

Found alloy wheels on a junkyard Element

Did the valve lash adjustment, replaced the valve cover with a junkyard one I painted, with a new gasket

...and spent 3 FULL DAYS cleaning the crud out of this thing. I even ran an ozone generator in it multiple times to get rid of the musty smell.

I paid $3500 for it and spent about $2000 in parts. It still needs a decent stereo (maybe for her birthday). And it's getting a front end alignment tomorrow.

She calls this car "Eleanor", so I 3D printed an emblem in the closest font I could find. It's in one of the pics. And yes, I know Eleanor is an already-established car name for a very specific car, and I did try and talk her out of it. That is the name that spoke to her, so that is the name of the car.

Here is my question:

We used the Chemical Guys VRP product to renew the composite panels, and they looked fantastic when first applied. But the moment it rained, they became a streaky mess. We re-applied, and made sure to rub it in really well, but it became a streaky mess again after it rained. I had seen several folks swear by that product, but it did not work for us. Suggestions for something a little more permanent?
