There’s something beautiful about the ancient connection between Jews and Ethiopian Christians. The story of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon has connected Ethiopia and Jerusalem for generations, through faith, tradition, and scripture.

Even our New Year celebrations come around the same season. Enkutatash and Rosh Hashanah are different traditions, but both are about renewal, reflection, and hope for a new beginning.

Our history and ties together runs deep, and may this new years bring our cultures and counties closer together

What is Sabat Sanbat?

The Cycle of 7: Starting from the first Shabbat of Nisan, every 7th Shabbat is celebrated as a unique milestone of elevated holiness.

Community & Spirit: It is a sacred time dedicated to deep prayer, Torah learning, family gatherings, and strengthening community bonds.

Many state aid organizations in Israel have helped Eritrean refugees with housing, welfare, healthcare and even tuition.

This is the story of two Eritrean refugees who went through unimaginable abuse in the Egyptian desert before eventually finding safety in Israel.

Stories like theirs show a side that often gets overlooked the help many Eritreans have received by Israel and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Three years after a political protest turned ugly at an Eritrean festival in downtown Tacoma, a federal lawsuit has been voluntarily dismissed against self-described human rights activists who were accused of vandalism and assault.

The lawsuit stemmed from confrontations at the 49th Annual Eritrean Festival hosted by the nonprofit Eritrean Association in Greater Seattle (EAGs) on Aug. 5, 2023. Tacoma police said at the time that a group of demonstrators had knocked over several event tents set up overnight and that later scuffles between protesters and event-goers were quickly stopped.

EAGs, which filed the lawsuit in June 2024, claimed that 13 named defendants and 150 unidentified other protesters took part in a coordinated attack against property and people, calling their conduct “intentional, malicious, oppressive,” according to the complaint. In a previous statement through their lawyer, the named defendants denied the characterization of events and alleged they were being targeted for promoting civic and human rights changes in Eritrea

Eritrea, an Eastern African country north of Ethiopia and along the Red Sea, “abused a wide range of human rights”in 2024, according to a U.S. State Department report from that year. The country hasn’t held an election since its independence in 1993 and routinely suppresses basic freedoms, the nonprofit Human Rights Watch said.

EAGs denied ties to the government, but the named defendants claimed that Eritrean festivals are fundraising tools controlled by the country’s leadership. As a nonprofit, EAGs aims to support Eritreans who arrived in Seattle due to conflicts in the Horn of Africa, according to its lawsuit.

The federal complaint was dismissed Monday without settlement in the U.S. District Court for Western Washington after both sides agreed to end litigation, court records show. Trial had been scheduled for October.

At about 6 a.m. on the event’s second day, an estimated 150 to 200 protesters showed up to an intersection near the Greater Tacoma Convention Center, where the weekend festival was being held, The News Tribune previously reported.

Tacoma police received reports of property being destroyed and set on fire along Market Street, although it’s unclear how officers addressed the reported damage, according to police records. Officers stayed on the scene into the afternoon to keep the peace and reported diffusing several fights and arguments, records show. At least three reports were written for assault and one for a person brandishing a firearm, the records noted.
“We don’t have any riots or anything of that nature,” a Tacoma police spokesperson told The News Tribune at the time.

I came across the story, it is quite tragic that these things keep happening among our people in foreign lands. I really hope that we could be better as people this is beyond sickening.

Debre Genet was helped to be established by Menilik II in 1893. A century old Christian presence in the holy land.

Till the state is preserved, and Christian Ethiopians enjoy the opportunity to practice their faith with respect dignity and coexistence with others inside of Israel. It is such a beautiful site to see. 🇮🇱🇪🇹

Israel has strong safeguards and legal measures to protect Christian worship across all parts of jerusalem. Allowing Ethiopian orthodox Christian’s to maintain monasteries, clergy and pilgrimages. This is great to witness and Ethiopians I’m sure are very grateful.

It’s quite incredible to witness how far Ethiopia has progressed under our government, they truly are prioritizing the safety of the people and simplifying communication with our emergency response resources.
