People across Maharashtra started huge protests demanding “Mumbai should stay in Maharashtra.” Workers, students, writers, and political leaders joined the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement. There were rallies, strikes, marches, and public pressure against the plan to separate Mumbai or include it with Gujarat.

The movement became so strong that the government finally accepted the demand. After years of protests and the sacrifice of 106 martyrs, Mumbai became the capital of Maharashtra on 1 May 1960.

There wasn’t just one person — many leaders and activists played major roles, including:

  • S. M. Joshi
  • Acharya Atre
  • Prabodhankar Thackeray
  • Senapati Bapat
  • Shripad Amrit Dange
  • Keshavrao Jedhe

The movement became very intense, and 106 protesters lost their lives during police firing near present-day Hutatma Chowk. Their sacrifice is remembered as a key reason Mumbai stayed with Maharashtra when Maharashtra and Gujarat were officially formed on 1 May 1960.

महाराष्ट्रातील लोकांनी “मुंबई महाराष्ट्रातच राहिली पाहिजे” अशी जोरदार आंदोलनं केली. कामगार, विद्यार्थी, लेखक आणि नेते सगळे संयुक्त महाराष्ट्र आंदोलनात सहभागी झाले. मोर्चे, संप, निदर्शने आणि सरकारवर मोठा दबाव टाकण्यात आला.

हे आंदोलन इतकं मोठं झालं की शेवटी सरकारला मागणी मान्य करावी लागली. १०६ हुतात्म्यांच्या बलिदानानंतर १ मे १९६० रोजी मुंबई महाराष्ट्राची राजधानी बनली.

फक्त एका व्यक्तीने नाही, तर अनेक नेते आणि कार्यकर्त्यांनी यात मोठी भूमिका बजावली. त्यामध्ये:

  • एस. एम. जोशी
  • आचार्य अत्रे
  • प्रबोधनकार ठाकरे
  • सेनापती बापट
  • श्रीपाद अमृत डांगे
  • केशवराव जेधे

यांचा समावेश होता.

हे आंदोलन खूप तीव्र झाले होते आणि आजच्या हुतात्मा चौकाजवळ झालेल्या पोलिस गोळीबारात १०६ आंदोलनकर्त्यांचा मृत्यू झाला. त्यांच्या बलिदानामुळेच १ मे १९६० रोजी महाराष्ट्र आणि गुजरात राज्यांची स्थापना झाली तेव्हा मुंबई महाराष्ट्रात राहिली, असे मानले जाते.
