Oz is so cute and 90s and this show just ages sooo well 😭

Would you rather have overseas in-laws visit at 6 weeks postpartum or wait until spring?

I’m 16 weeks pregnant, and our baby girl is due in mid-December. 🩷

We’re trying to decide when my partner’s parents (who live in Brazil) should visit: either around 6 weeks postpartum (late January) or wait until April/May.

The dilemma is that German winters are pretty miserable. It’s cold, grey, and often icy. This year people were constantly slipping on the ice, and hospitals were packed with injuries. There isn’t much to do outside, so they’d mostly either be at the apartment we’re renting for them or at our place. (we will rent a different flat for them near ours for the entire time so they wont actually stay with us. Just come over when we say they can.)

My MIL really wants to come as soon as possible and was a bit hurt when we suggested waiting until spring. I also feel guilty because everyone else will get to meet the baby sooner simply because they live nearby and can just stop by for an hour. But I am mostly thinking about what’s best for us and baby.

Our concern is that having overseas visitors so early might actually create more work than help. We’d need to pick them up from the airport, help them get settled (they don’t really speak German), and they’d likely spend most of their time at our apartment since there isn’t much else to do in January. We also have a small flat, and I’m not sure how comfortable I’ll feel breastfeeding around my FIL, so I’d probably disappear into the bedroom every time, which is fine I guess.

If they came in April or May, we could at least go for walks, spend time outside, and maybe even have lunch with my family so everyone could finally meet.

On the other hand… maybe we’ll be desperate for any help? 😅 My partner will be home for the first 6 weeks and then work from home for another month, so I won’t be completely alone. We also don’t really have other family support.

My MIL does have experience with babies (one baby, my partner) and would probably cook, hold the baby, or help with diapers, although they’ve never said they’re coming to help—it seems they’re mainly coming to meet their granddaughter.

For those who’ve been through the newborn stage: Would you have wanted overseas family to visit around 6 weeks postpartum, even if the timing and weather weren’t ideal? Or would waiting until spring have made for a much nicer experience for everyone?

Thanks all :)
