Matthew Needham as The Joker

Where do I even start? Like many of you reading this, I too am a massive fan of Batman: The Animated Series. Having grown up on Mark Hamill’s legendary performance of The Joker, I am more accustomed to the more zany, maniacal, over-the-top wild card persona of Mr. J. That doesn’t just stop at Hamill’s take because Nicholson and Romero also portrayed similar characteristics in their own Jokers that were directly pulled from the character’s appearances decades prior. However, I truly believe that The Joker in Batman: Caped Crusader’s second season is the first TRUE adaptation of the Golden Age Joker… aka The Criminal… aka Joker Prime as I like to call him.

His early appearances back in the 40s, while indeed having been drawn in panels as smiling and even laughing, THAT Joker was not the maniacal showman we’ve collectively known for most of our lives. He didn’t crack jokes, he didn’t make puns. In the first ever story, he was described as mirthless, having a tone-less voice, and having a changeless mask-like face with hate filled eyes. That is what this show perfectly portrayed to me. He was a sadistic madman with a nihilistic outlook on life and the design and Matthew Needham’s voice and performance IMO nailed it. He didn’t need to laugh. He didn’t need to be loud. He didn’t need to be zany. He had his plan and that was all that mattered to prove a point. Not to mention his penchant for disguises as seen towards the end of the first episode as well as his ability to hold is own in a fist fight with Batman in the last episode.

Even Needham giving The Joker a soft German accent was a clever Easter egg for hardcore Joker fans. One of the inspirations for The Joker’s creation was German actor Conrad Veidt who starred as the ever-smiling protagonist Gwynplaine in the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs. From the way his hair and face were drawn, to the scarf he was wearing, to the darker shades of purple on his trench coat and hat, it was nice departure from the usual clownish elements we all equate with The Joker. I personally like to think it was an actual homage to Veidt himself.

To sum it all up, The Joker in Caped Crusader was definitely an enjoyable and memorable version in my opinion. While the more familiar Hamill-esque personality/performances are a lot more easy to take and process, this much colder, humorless, and sinister take was definitely a great approach in a day where “Joker fatigue” is always beeing thrown around online. It for sure helped Needham’s performance stand out. I honestly think Matthew Needham deserves to be on my top five list of Joker performers and grouped amongst the likes of Mark Hamill, John DiMaggio, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Troy Baker.

Went as grown-up JJ to SDCC this year!

It’s shocking that not very many people cosplay as this version of The Joker! I was over the moon to cosplay as such a unique version of the characters amongst the usual Ledger/purple suited cosplays walking around.

Batman: Caped Crusader - Return of The Joker

For anybody reading the title, no that’s not a typo or a reference to the Batman Beyond movie. I’ve read a few early reviews of season 2 and a few of them seem to miss the point of this iteration of The Joker.

I for one am excited and ecstatic that we essentially get “Joker Prime” this season. The original 1940s Joker is clearly the inspiration for Matthew Needham’s take on the Clown Prince of Crime. This version was described as a man with a changeless mask-like face with burning hate filled eyes. A man without mirth despite how he looks. A man whose voice is described as toneless. A far cry from what we all have come to know and love when listening to Mark Hamill’s iconic and immortal performance. So before yall watch season two, I suggest you either read Batman #1 from 1940 (NOT The man Who Laughs) or watch this motion comic of said issue to get a closer idea of how you can expect Caped Crusader’s Mr. J.

Prepping for next weekend!

Watching the 200X show on Prime in preparation for the movie next weekend! Brian Dobson’s Skeletor is absolutely my favorite iteration of Skeletor. He has Alan Oppenheimer’s cheese and camp but a mania and darkness all his own that enhances this version of Ol’ Bonehead.

Brilliant show.

The universe shall quake in my shadow!

I was lucky enough to score a Skeletor from Kohl’s that isn’t falling apart due to QC issues!

Rubber bands for the save!

Painted the hands to be more screen accurate and used rubber bands to make the folded glove cuffs? Painted those a lighter shade of lilac and sealed them with matte spray.

As little as this mod is, I think it does A LOT to enhance this figure.

READ:
The custom head is part of a set of four heads by @plastic_rg from Instagram. Unfortunately, he is not taking orders at this time.

“And as you can see, I’m a lot happier!”

I finally have the figure I NEVER thought I’d have without paying an arm and a leg for! My very own Batman ‘89 Jack Nicholson Joker figure!

So here is the breakdown of where I got everything so I don’t get a million repeat questions.

The body, extra hands, cane, guns, and card stand are from McFarlane Toys.

The custom heads, heads stand, flower, and Smylex spray can was ordered from @plastic_rg on Instagram.
Unfortunately, he’s not taking any orders at this time.

The base stand is from @ws3ddesigns from Etsy.

The trading card with the original Bob Ringwood costume sketch was from a TOPPS Batman 1989 trading card pack.

The bullhorn, remote control, gas mask, walkie-talkie, chattering teeth, and trench coat came with the Beast Kingdom 1989 Joker figure.

2026 Cinematic Villains

I was cleaning my shelves when I realized I have figures of each major villain from this year’s biggest nerd-centric movies.

Shao Kahn - Mortal Kombat II (May 8)

Skeletor - Masters of the Universe (June 6)

M. Bison - Street Fighter (October 16)

Dr. Doom - Avengers: Doomsday (December 18)

What a lineup!

u/Marc_Monarch — 3 months ago

The forces of Outworld has come to Eternia to conquer it in the name of Shao Kahn, Emperor of Outworld. Seeing this as an opportunity to finally destroy He-Man and his friends, Skeletor joins forces with The Emperor thus creating a new Deadly Alliance.

u/Marc_Monarch — 3 months ago

What’s this?! Skeletor, Evil Lord of Destruction and bane of Eternia, and Rita Repulsa, Empress of Evil and wicked foe of the Power Rangers, have joined forces! What diabolical deeds do these two villains have in store?
